Old Firms in Oxford Area

Hi All,
We only pulled Coal from South Wales to Didcot Power Station, I only did it for a few months cos I was waiting for a vacancy to come up on the General side, easy job just so bloody monotonous! Went on General then with a F10, only problem was she was rated for 38 tons, all the General wagons ran at 32 tons, so if the early coal shift (they left Milton Park at about 3 am) had problems with 1 of their wagons they used to take my F10! As you can imagine I got ever so slightly “irritated” about this so I switched to a F7 that became spare cos they couldnt use them. The black DAF 95, from Kirkby in Ashfield, thats them, thanks for the picture they all bring back memories.
I struggling to work out how to put pictures on here, give me a Twin-splitter and I am in heaven, give me a keyboard and I am a dunce, gota get the dark side to help cos she good with these things. I got a big storage box full of photos that I would like to share with everyone.

Anyone remember these?

The railway yard by the bridge, Garsington Road, Oxford.

My first Euro job/wagon, I loved that old girl, and believe it or not once I had got her wound up she went like a train! France/Belgium/Germany/Holland/Switzerland/Italy/Spain we went, and didnt we have the crack on there!!!

adr : you sorted the picture posting out then! Well done, I was looking forward to them and you have done it in record time. :sunglasses: Quick question, did Cannons used to run up to Coleshill to a power station? I think it was called Hams Hall!
H & M. Was that the Harding’s boy, Franks son ( Joe’s Grandson ) and Moore was a nephew, IIRC. Did they start out of Joe’s old yard at the top of Rose Hill, behind the Spud shop. Did a lot out of Cowley works. I remember the Luker’s wagons too, but that was when I was running out of the West Midlands to Cowley. Great pics. mate, keep 'em coming.

Hi Big-G, yes mate got there in the end!Been off line for a while computer went belly up, good to be back cos really wanted to get these pictures on here. To my knowledge Cannons coal wagons only did South Wales. H&M, you could be right about Rose Hill, I only remember them out of Pony Road Ind. Est. Cowley. They did a bit of European as well, I remember waiting at Calais one night & one of their Marathons was parked next to me, had a plate on the front grill with “JOCK” written on it if I remember right. A couple more H&Ms here, sisters.

Always a nice tidy fleet. Wagons used to be green, used to see a couple of their Leyland Clydesdale (sleepers) parked up behind the Shotover Arms, Green Road roudabout at the weekends in the mid 70s.

Anyone remember Ron Coles Transport?

Started as an OD in Didcot, i remember he had a Turboliner/Leader which he used to park near his house before moving to Milton Park near Cannons, bright blue trucks, FH’s, Magnums. Ended up as Coles Logistics Ltd but after some duff deals from his business partners he decided to bankrupt the company to save his name.

One of his old trailers is parked in a yard visible form the A34 North approx 1/2 mile before the Kidlington North bridge

Good old boy he was, used to work with his sister

Hi nickyboy,
I used to work with Ron “Squibby” Coles, I worked for RT Express, Milton Park & they took over Berkshire Vale Transport who Squibby worked for. Spoke to him a couple of months ago, sound as a pound stand up bloke Squib, you would want him in your corner if things kicked off! Great driver, always tell his F10 from the others cos he had a Volvo Viking on each mirror arm. All Berkshire Vale wagons had the same coloured cab but the chassis was left whatever colour it came in, Squibby wanted his chassis/wheels/tank etc red cos he liked to look smart, so he took his horse home one weekend & painted it red by hand with a brush!

Thats him, old Squibby

He was one of many who made we want to drive trucks, used to give me loads of company goodies when i worked with his sister in my old job when i was about 16/17.

Got an old home vid of his Magnums on parade at Truckfest, must have been around 96/97 as it was one the last times i attended.

Berkshire Vale F10 that i tooled around in for a while, then FL10 that I got brand new. The “Wendy house” actually went quite well, but what were Volvo thinking of with that cab!!!

H&M again parked outside their yard up Pony Road. County Dairies from Kidlington.

A couple of Alan Longs, Globetrotter is outside H&Ms yard, the F12 is on the service road outside B.L. Cowley.

Managed to get a frame from an old Truckfest vid from 1997 with Squibbys Magnums

Some good pics there lads, though some of them are a bit after my time. Do you have any info on them, sort of potted history, I would be very interested. Cheers.

Found this one on Bubb’s Scrapbook thread. They were all Bedford in the 60’s, except for a couple of eight leggers, which I think were Fodens. Does anyone know if they changed to a mix fleet in the 70’s.

BigG-Unit:

Borrowed this off Bubb’s Scrapbook thread. (Hope you don’t mind Marc, but need the practise putting photo’s on) Besides that I desperately needed to get this thread back on!

Didnt they have a yard in Stratton St Margaret ? - off Oxford rd Swindon.
Think that Dow frieght moved into their yard when Curtis"s finished, late 70s ?

yes my father worked for them . his name was Eric morbey and i worked out of the same yard when dow took over

They also had a yard off of Botley road Oxford, behind where Mc Donalds is nowadays. It’s an industrial park called ‘Curtis’ yard’.
I’m pretty sure the guy on the left in the picture is Bill Ralph, who worked for them late 60s early 70s.

They didn’t do a lot of low loader work as this was at the time of A,B and C licences and They had a C licence which only alowed them to move their own stuff. Ameys of Oxford (later ARC) from just up the road in Wotton did most of the local low loader movement as they had an A licence. (I think as it’s now a long time ago).

I did drive a GUY big J for them as a favour for two days in the early 70s, took a 15ft wide load on a flat bed trailer down to South Wales.

Does anyone remember or have photos of a tanker company called Oxenline - Dave Hewer was the owner I think, late 80s early 90s ■■

Ron Coles had 3 Magnums - L3RCT - M6RCT & N9RCT…
