Hello mate
Yeah Rod’s gone now. I talk to him on the phone now and again, can only be a loss to Thamsedown, good old boy to have as a transport manager, he knew how to get it done, we had some good old day’s there mate, I would like to do it all again.

cheers

John.

Long time ago I used to live at Long Wittenham then Wheatley as a wee lad, my mum and dad had a pub in both villages. I can clearly remember Wekankarryit doing Dray deliveries during busy times, christmas etc, for Ind Coope of Park End St, this must have been in the mid sixties. Also when I was at school at Wheatley I vaguely remember the son of the Moore family of H&M Transport was in my year, at the time Harding and Moore did a lot of work for Pressed steel Fisher and British Leyland I think. Anyone remember Cowley Carriers who I think were in Wheatley, I used to play squash with a bloke who worked for them, I know his first name was Bob, he used to drink in my parents pub and he knew the groundsman at one of the colleges so we had free access to their squash courts. As a youngster my hero was Cecil Hemmings who drove for Baynes Timber ladder hill Wheatley about 1970, anyone know if he’s still about?

Cowley Carriers, always looked smart in their Blue/Red/White, mainly concentrated on local moves, I worked for Luker Bros. Oxford for a while (I am sober now though!) doing mainly European, C.C. used to do local/U.K. work along with Harold Wood, Oxford, although H.W. started doing European as well with wagon & drags same as we had on Lukers.

Borrowed this off Bubb’s Scrapbook thread. (Hope you don’t mind Marc, but need the practise putting photo’s on) Besides that I desperately needed to get this thread back on!

Didnt they have a yard in Stratton St Margaret ? - off Oxford rd Swindon.
Think that Dow frieght moved into their yard when Curtis"s finished, late 70s ?

I don’t know if this Leyland Hippo is an Oxfordshire wagon, but the photo was taken in Banbury.
Just a touch of smoke

Ah, since you mentioned Banbury, another one courtesy of Bubbs, though I don’t know if it’s close enough to call the Oxford area! Yes, why not. Anyone know anything about these?

I remember Andys of Banbury big g and wasn’t General Foods from round that way - Birds Custard etc.?

I remember Andy’s, and General Foods is still there I think, AP Products was just across the road, another firm was Banbury Carriers. I still haven’t seen any Banbury Buildings photos, with all the drivers and mates that must have worked there, someone must have some pics.

Andy’s of Banbury were also a Scania franchise back in the seventies.

Hello,I found these 2…cropped from front covers of Commercial Motors…

Cheers Bubbs.

Thanks for them Marc, great pics. I suppose you thought it would save me nickin’ them! dieseldog will be over the moon!

Top pics Bubbs, ■■■ 992J the Lynx was iirc, a Coventry motor, we had five of them new on J plates 992 through to 996, I was based at Coventry where they did the commercial buildings, opposite what was Rootes Ryton plant.

I asked about this pic. on Bubb’s Scrapbook thread but couldn’t find out much about it. The motors look like they are on car factory work (B.M.C.) but I don’t remember seeing them about Oxford. Anyone know anything about them? Wheelnut found a mention of a firm with the same name on the Eastern Traffic Area site but I can’t see a tie up there!

Been doing a bit of searching, found another pic and the reg no. is, I think, from Bedford/Luton area. Now I think I can remember going to a British Leyland factory at Dunstable, (off the motorway towards the town, to the traffic lights, turn right, factory along on the left.) Am I remembering correctly? If so This firm could have been from around that area.

Just found this one on Bubbs’ Scrapbook thread and I must say I thought it a bit unusual. I don’t remember seeing any of these on Smith’s, which by the Reg. No. looks to be around '72. Anyone know if they had many of them or was it a one off?
