Sid Unwin’s wagon NMB 513H the fastest of the 5 Gardner 120s (don’t ask me why). Snapped in 1986 it was off the road and had seen better days - starting to be canibalised for parts (wing mirror missing) Note the Chelford Market sticker in the window - knackered Leyland cab to the right
I worked at Jaguar Cars from 1980 to 1991 and we had a few suppliers from The Potteries.
Some I remember are Rists Wires & Cables Newcastle - yellow lorries, mainly Fords I think. They had a driver called Lionel Morton who had worked at Haydons and for Ron Marsh before Rists - we used to have a good old chin wag in the office when he was delivering - it would go, “Owat sirree art gooin on?” “I’m alllrate Lye” or “Jus meddlin” then we would do the “Cos kick a bo agen a wo yead it back n bost it?” The rest of the office were dumbfounded
There was also Michelin and Dartcash Engineering from Stoke and Selectus up Biddulph Moor - sometimes my Uncle Fred would drop a load off in his little Leyland flat bed and need a mug of tea.
Happy days …

That name rings a bell.I was at secondary school with John Marsh, son of Ron Marsh in the mid '50’s.He was a portley lad, always had plenty of pocket money, used to keep all his mates in ■■■■.
Li Morton told me a story about when he drove for Ron Marsh in the 60s - seems Joe Boon (Haydons) had a faster wagon and would often overtake him after Li had left a market before Joe - one day on the M6 Li sees Joe approaching behind so picks up a newspaper (he’s already cut a hole in the middle of) to read in front of his face, wedging his knee under the wheel.
Joe passes, turns his head and nearly had a heart attack!
Maybe not a trick for today’s M6 …
OLD LIVESTOCK HAULIERS SHROPSHIRE
Check the above thread (page for a couple of cracking photos of Haydon’s wagons that not even I had seen before - blew me away

welcome to the site steve .any phots you have of stoke firms please post them .do you remember John hemmings ,mickey hall and John Bolton from your brs days.or ray benson& jeff tyson from longton transport . is john lindon still with the co- op at talk
John linden was not with the co-op when i started 11 yrs ago but most of the lads knew him, on the brs only saw some of the drivers when parked down the road the names don’t ring a bell, on longton i was there in early eighties on a temp contract doing 2 and 3 days a week those names don’t ring a bell either.
