Cockney Pete3:
Anyone remember Critchlows? ran canary yellow ERFs in the 80s■■?

Hi Pete,
Yeh I remember them, I think their trucks were also maroon colour at one time, I remember loading with them at John Thompsons (later Rockwell) in W-ton. The firm I worked for Thomas Ingles hauled trailer beam axles and Foden axle casings, Critchlows took the Albion axle casings to Scotstoun. One of their big j’s with a 180 gardner had a turbo fitted to it as an experiment, after a trip to Scotland I asked the driver (lenny?) what it went like? His reply had me in stitches he said it was like any other 180 gardner bloody gutless, the only other difference was that it whistled. I think they may have done a lot of work for Shelton steelworks.

hi cockney pete & trev h

yeh your’e talking about jack critchlow & you are right trev he did a lot out of shelton & they were at one time maroon guy big js, then changed to erf & changed colour to the yellow.

i live just round the corner from his old yard which has coaches in it now, but the critchlows transport sign is still there.

i think his grandson phil critchlow used to have his own waggon ( erf ec 14 olimpic )but now i belive he sold it & now works for arclid transport driving a xf105, he was in one of the trucking or truck & driver magazines a month or so ago.

about Downings bricks.IICR they was pale blue with red chassis. I had a hiab i was always in their yards around the potterys.
I was in there yard nr trubshire cross, one of Millars (irelande) was in there he had a steel plate in a fridge that was 7ft wide
and 30 ft long and 3 inches thick and he was trying to put 20 tons of bricks on top of the plate via the ramp.

Hiya… flying foden was it micky bailey who had the steel cab ERFs■■? one morning one of his drivers was hit by a TNT /Wilkinsons lorry
about 3 miles south of jct 15 one morning and lost his life. His dad also drove for the same outffit on local work and his dad was in walsall
or near their. They got the old man to go to Derby for a load that did,nt exsist so he would come home a differnt way and not see the crash.
That was a bad day as i knew the lad from the Stoke area.

Who was the company based inbetween Caverswall Castle and Catchems Corner, my dad seems to recall they used to go everywhere, before my time but he always used to tell me and IIRC a driver I used to work with says he used to work there.

IIRC its got an old Bassets Van trailer in the yard now.
