Anyone remember Bancroft Son & Powers, from Coalville, claimed to have all the NCB , Midland Brick work, well every time I phoned them it was the same old story, Ah driver ring back in 20 mins, & I will fix you up with a load, so when I used to ring back I got to speak to some one differant, but alas it was the same bloody tale , ring me back in 20 mins,I gave up in the end, they were a complete waste of time & telephone money. Regards Larry PS. 70s Era.
Remember Wilfy Whites from Tow Law, they had a London Office, allways good for a load of fruit off the docks for Newcastle Green Market, usually for Herbert Dady , or Hardys, Happy days 50/60s Larry.
Lawrence Dunbar:
Aye , I forgot little Yorky, he was also car park attendant at night, the National Car Park in Royal Mint Street, he would wake you up with a cupppa anytime, also you could give him 2bob, for parking, no ticket of course, but it was 6bob normally. He would also go with you to load , he knew London area very well, I was worth 10bob, when you had a few pick ups… I enjoyed running down the smoke as they used to call it in my young days, I shudder to think what it would be like trying to do what we all did in those days,? I also remember a drop we used to go to at night, Caps Printers, Wardour Street, Soho,it was the ideal time to go, it was up a narrow alley, but a good tip, & sometimes MTs, back to Hendon paper mill at Sunderland, Regards Larry
I remember Yorky he used to be on the lorry park at Plumbers Row just off the Whitechapel Rd. at Aldegate. Assuming it was the same bloke, he would always wear a boiler suit with a haulage company name on it. He slept in the hut on the park and would always park you roughly in order according to what time you wanted to leave the next morning. It was a rare occurance to have to move to let someone out or get blocked in yourself. He didn’t half pack you in close together though.
Regards Haddy,Gt.Yarmouth.
Thats him, he lived in a hut, but I must say he was allways clean & tidy, a real nice bloke, very helpfull, plus he must have made a bob or two in his day, with the no ticket parking racket he had going . Also if you wanted directions any where in London he would tell you at the drop of a hat, he was a genius, & not even a Cockney, Happy days Larry

I remember seeing a pile of cardboard move one night as I walked past and realised there was someone under it, dead of winter too. Come to think of it he may not have been as old we thought.
You don’t mean “Beatys” cafe in Backchurch Lane by any chance do you? We are going to a show in London next week, I’ll go and see if he’s still there. Only joking. Regards Haddy, Gt.Yarmouth.

Hello Larry, I had a Terrier at the sweet age of18. Ex South Wales gas board, we removed the box and put a drop-side on her. My father was running a Boxer at the time. We had good service out of both.
I learned to drive in anything that the keys were left in, mostly BMC FGs lol.
Great to read your stories on here along with many others.
Regards Paul
Springfields were one of the main forwarders out of Hull and Goole and he was mainly involved in fruit.

20th. Had some of the work out of Walkers Steel at Blackburn, I used to load there for Spennymoor when I worked for Smiles for Miles, Happy days Larry.
Hi Lawrence , I remember some of the firms you mention, I loaded regularly for West ■■■■■■■ Barrow etc at Fields at Killingworth through Wellborn Freights, Jack Mingay at Archbolds No 7 The Side, provided loads now and again. I loaded window frames from Hills at Cardiff to Carlisle and Brigham after taking all the canteen equipment from Tarmac Ltd canteen at Kingstown Carlisle when they finished that section of the A74 Gretna to Greymoorhill. This equipmen went to their next job the Taff Vale Trunk Road at Cilfyndd, Pontypridd. I remember four of us trying to lift the cast iron cooking range onto the back of my ERF 66GX six wheeler. We could not lift it there was so much chip fat etc stuck down the cast iron legs that our hands just slid up them. This would be around 1970.
Happy days. Leyland 600.
