Old Clearance Houses

Aye happy days they were indeed, we did quite a bit for Welborn, fair rates & prompt payers, If you look at page one you will see a Welborn confamation note, all gone now of course , Arthur the manager now lives abroad & Syd works for a shipping Co on Blyth Harbour, Regards Larry.

Hi Lawrence , I spent many happy holidays as a boy staying with friends of my parents who ran a ship repair yard at Low Quay, Blyth, J.W. Colpitts Ltd. which enabled me to visit many of the colliers berthed in Blyth river, they ran a Morris J Type van and a Morris Commercial 30cwt lorry collecting a great variety of ship components from places such as Elders Walker (porthole glass ready cut to size) Willington Quay Gangplank Co, British Engines, Tyne Dock Engineering, South Shields and lots more that until I see references on this great site jogs my memory. I remember the Crofton Pit in on Plessey Rd and the United bus garage by the football ground. Does anyone remember George Colpitts, Charlie & Bessie Holgeth who were company directors, Charlie was a big pal of Eddie Ferguson next door in Bath Lane. Colpitts drivers were Johnny Thompson from Klondyke and Bob Mann from Blyth both who died young but were great pals to me and put the added transport blood into me at an early age. In later life this early apprenticeship learning Tyneside shipping suppliers etc stood me in good stead when I started my own haulage business in 1964 tending to specialise inwork from ■■■■■■■ to the North East. Here is a copy of a Christmas card sent to my family by Bessie & Charlie Holgeth in 1976 showing good old Blyth as I remember it in my childhood. I visited Blyth last in December 2011 which I must say is only a vague shadow of its former dirty but vibrant industrial port. Cheers Leyland 600

This would be their glass supplier no doubt, Regards Larry.

Hi Chris, you mean “Ready Reckoner” don’t you, it was in the days before calculators! Cheers Haddy.

Aye haddy, How do you work out a 5ton 7cwts, 3qrs 4lbs at 19shillings and 6pence hapenny a ton.? I lost my ready reckoner years ago. I used to haul a lot of flour and poultry feed around ■■■■■■■■ town shops etc perhaps 10 or 15 drops all varying small consignments and all at differen rates, It used to take all evening to calculate the total revenue due for such a load, metrication certainly made things easier even though I still cannot visualise a load of bagged kilos !!!
Cheers L. 600.

1931 Probabley used by my old Grandad in those days Regards Larry.

All these from the good old Headlight Magazine, a drivers best friend in the old days when we all had to look for return loads. Regards Larry

Although I never had any dealings with Cyprien Fox I often used to wonder how they came by such a name ! Cheers Dennis.

HI, MR ,Dunbar. I used headlight a lot after ,after my little black book ,with my first choice ,BRS always new your money was safe 3 months but it came and a fair rate ,lots of other good firms to many to mention.YOURS Barry Waddy

Aye well the BRS Were allways good for return traffic, I quite often loaded off them from Corby & Sheffield & Liverpool, of course I was driving for a firm that give me a bob a ton in those days which in fact amounted to a tidy bit of extra dosh which I put away for the rainey days, Regards Larry.

Aye a often wondered myself about that, they had Depots in London,Manchester Middlesbro & Newport,I only ever loaded from their Newport Office once, they never had a lot of traffic for the North East. Regards Larry.

Anyone remember this company? the 'phone numbers were a bit shorter back then! I have some more cards scanned but can’t seem to put them on here, something keeps coming up about PDF not being allowed. Cheers Haddy.

Hi Haddy, I can remember 20th Century Transport as a clearing house and seem to remember they also ran some wagons in a smart dark green livery.

Another one, Gavis Traffic Services, London allways good for a load of steel plate from Hounslow up to Smart & Browns at Spennymoor. also 20th Century Transport, in the 50/60s era, Regards Larry…

Hi Larry.Yes remember Gavis.Among some of the loads we did. A lot of rail chairs when they ripped the railways apart round London in the 60’s back to Stanton Iron Works. Pig Iron from Fords back to the many foundry’s in the Midlands.Put the phone down l will ring you straight back and he did. Regards Mike.

Bob Gavis was good for loading bulk tippers, too. At least he was until my boss poached his number one traffic clerk!
And there was Taylors, who loaded multi-drop out of London at good rates and who operated out of a wooden garden shed somewhere out Colnbrook way.

I don’t see Noblett and Underwood of Warrington on the web site ,multi drop loads of wire products if I remember , I think they went under at some point .?
