Hi Larry.Yes remember Gavis.Among some of the loads we did. A lot of rail chairs when they ripped the railways apart round London in the 60’s back to Stanton Iron Works. Pig Iron from Fords back to the many foundry’s in the Midlands.Put the phone down l will ring you straight back and he did. Regards Mike.

Another one from London Whitmans , The Minories, near tower hill, Ive loaded tractors from Basildon a few times for him, he used to porkies though, He would say 3 tractors for Newcastle area, but you could be sure as hell it would be 2, & 1 for Hull or someware like that., but It appeared that he was a prompt payer so my gaffer was ok about it. Regards Larry. 60s Era

More London ones come to mind,50s60s, Verlings Transport, & Spurlings Haulage West Ferry Rd. both good for return loads, but they used to tell porkies about weight, I remember loading pulp for Croppers at Burnside Kendal 15T turned out to 19, mind you the old 8 wheeler Mk 5 Aec coped no bother, & luckiley I didnt get stopped on the way up. Happy Days Larry

I know Im getting on years, but I rememer lots of drivers that ran London in the 50s60s, when we had to get our own return loads, There must be a lot of them still about. We used to stand on Tower Hill waiting for the phones to ring, there was 6 phone boxes spaced out, the numbers began with ROY. ebrv,Royal. Some one may recall these drivers names, Lofty Marshall, Albert Greenwood. RIP. Bobby Meggs,Matty Usher, Tommy Green.Buck Richardson. RIP. Peter Mangane,Ginger Lawson. Bobby Brown. Darky Robson.Charlie Bissett. Peter Green,Mick Finlay. Alec Craggs. plus lots more of Gordie lads, It would be very nice to here from them after all these years, wich are flying by may I add. Regards Larry

Also when down the smoke if things were quiet a lot of us used to ring the BRS at Corby, allways plenty of work there from the S&L Tube Mill, usually for Scotch, also we used to ring Fred Hillier at Orrell & Brewsters & get a load from Melton Mowbray it allways got us on our way.A few more drivers names . Dennis Cook , Bobby Jamieson, Tom Cartwright, Billy Spowart, Ted Curtis.Maurice Taylor RIP. all lads from the north east, Happy days Larry

Another one , Cables Montague Ltd, they had the work out of Turners Asbestos Cement at Erith, I used to load there quite often, it was allways for Hawthorn Leslies on the valley, when they were building prefabricated houses for Cramlington area, which as far as I know are still standing to this day, Regards Larry

Anyone remember Stannard Transport,Coventry Rd, Birmingham, allways good for a load in the 60s., Regards Larry.

Another Nottingham Firm B,Keetch, Stapleford, they used to do precast pipes, good return traffic in the 60s, I wonder what happened to them, ? Regards Larry Ps they had Green 6 Wheeler Albions.

Our gaffer would tell us not to hang about waiting for a load out of London area, run into BRS at Corby like you Larry. We were nearly always loaded out of their yard with strip out of Lancashire Steel, odd times we were sent into Stewart and Loyds or Lancs Steel mills for loading.Never failed to get a load for Sheffield area.
I think Keetch from Nottingham was taken over by some other firm, maybe Stirlands or Marshalls. The pipes would have been out of Stanton and Staveley at Ilkeston more than likely.

Can anyone remember General Haulage Service, based at Fairfield Garage Pelton, Chester le Street, long gone I suppose? Regards Larry.

One of our long retired drivers,Eric Atkinson, often mentions Air,Road and water of Glasgow when he worked for K. Fell & Co in the 50’s.Apparently he used to load off them every week and they always sorted him out good loads like Anchor chains or anchors or something similar. I remember ■■■■■■■■■■ from London but I never had any dealings with them, they always advertised in the Return Load section of the Headlight mag. Cheers Bewick.

Yes I remember both of them A.R.& W. had some work out of Turners Asbestos Cement Works on Dumbarton Rd, , also concrete pipes from Irvine allways good for a load back, & the drivers could allways get a sub off them if stuck for a bit of cash. ■■■■■■■■■ London used to do a bit North East stuff too, but thats a long time ago, 50s60s in my younger days, but very happy days may I add, Regards Larry

ernie holmes birming ham hts hull alec smith in hackney

We used those numbers regularly when I worked for J & H Transport. There was a small guy, name of Yorkie, who answered and passed messages to drivers. He got a few bob occassionally! I remember Albert Blake of S Shields, Norman was one driver. Countless NE/Scotch contacts were made there, including Hayton Coulthard! Happy days!

Aye , I forgot little Yorky, he was also car park attendant at night, the National Car Park in Royal Mint Street, he would wake you up with a cupppa anytime, also you could give him 2bob, for parking, no ticket of course, but it was 6bob normally. He would also go with you to load , he knew London area very well, I was worth 10bob, when you had a few pick ups… I enjoyed running down the smoke as they used to call it in my young days, I shudder to think what it would be like trying to do what we all did in those days,? I also remember a drop we used to go to at night, Caps Printers, Wardour Street, Soho,it was the ideal time to go, it was up a narrow alley, but a good tip, & sometimes MTs, back to Hendon paper mill at Sunderland, Regards Larry
