Old Cafe's

dafdave:
As i said im not sure exactly were itv was but you came up the slip off the a1 turned right, ran about 500yds an the cafe was on your left,it was big with a sloping t/park to the left and rear.Hope this helps.

regards dave.
P.S.The one at knayton i do know and used it when i was on the road also the one facing it on the s/bound lane.

Hullo,
“daffdave” Yes thats the spot, you’re quite correct. Though just to satisfy my curiosity I should like to find out exatly where it stood.
Lawrence,
That Woodside, the one you mention is still there, it has’nt moved from Knayton on the A19. It is still open and the food is still rubish. Next time you pass that way, go past it, go on for about another 5 miles. Then just past the Haynes Inn Pub, pull into the next laybye. You will get a really nice, clean well served si down meal and at a reasonable cost.
Cheers, Archie.

Lawrence Dunbar:
Aye the one opposite was Georges Cafe open 24 hours it was one of the good ones , slept there many a time, but sadly to say its long gone, not many goodens left, Regards Larry

Aye you are right there larry, the only prob with georges was the sloping parking
regards dave.

Yes I drove a Scammell Handyman in those days ,with two fuel tanks & one would run into the other, there was no tap to shut one off I used to put timbers under the wheels to try and level it up… Also it was nice & clean the beds were spotless, the one thing that spoilt it was the noise, night trunkers coming & leaving the engines running, but ive put up with a lot worse in my days tramping around. Regards Larry

hiya,
Larry I expect we shall be supping a bit stronger than transport cafe “dishwater” on Saturday, I can’t put a lot away these days but a drop of decent stuff is preferable to all the best cafe tea in the world, a little tale which I may have put on somewhere before but calling in Kates cabin one late afternoon for my nights pre-booked stopover stated to the lassie behind the counter that I was Tyne-Tees to which she replied “do you want them all poured now there’s nobody with you” she’d misunderstood me and thought I’d asked for ten teas, Kates was OK but a bit of a trek to the boozer if it was a wet night.
thanks harry long retired.

There was a Woodlands south of the A1/A64 junction at Micklefield, at the start of the village, northbound. It closed around the mid 90’s and is now housing.

Yes your correct its Nickname was Smithys, There was a pallett buyer in there, paid top dollar as I rememeber, It was rumoured at one time that Normans Cafe were going to take it on , but it never came to anything.

Another old cafe The Carlson at Bentley North of Doncaster. Not one of the good ones , You had to be carefull as you went in ,it was down two steps, otherwise you fell in. I recall the tea being undiscribable, in other words p<><>s, the grub was ok sometimes, it all depended who was cooking. anyone remember it. Regards Larry. PS. I think it burnt down ?,

I remember the Robin Hood Graham,it was a busy cafe in the 60s/70s,and I think it was open all night at one time.A lot of trunkers used it from the North East en route to B’ham area and the South West in pre Motorway days.

Another old cafe I remember The Bloody Oaks on the A1 at Stamford, changed to a pub in later years I think

Another one , can anyone remember The Astra Cafe , between Carlisle & Penrith on the old A 6, good food & clean as I recall 50/60s era ,the M 6 would be the end of it I suppose.

Hi Dave, Larry,A few more eh.the pot throwers at Two Gates,Brickhill cafe, The Glue Pot at Hockliffe all long gone i would think by now Cheers Ted

I remember the Robin Hood it is a Chinese now, I used to do a job where I had to be in Cowley at 7am on a new years day, did it 4 or 5 times late 60s early 70s I think it was the only Cafe open all night between the North East and Cowley all night on a new years day. Don’t think I used it much the rest of the year, it was mainly Ma Greens (Normans) and The Drome on the 6 hills road. Used to overnight at the Drome and the Engine in Leicester on a regular basis.
