Old Cafe's

Larry can you remember the name of the cafe with the pub next door to it at Biggleswade? It was another regular watering hole for the late “Parky” and “Cracker” Bates . Ps almost forgot John Kilbride, he used it regularly when he worked for Shepherd on the fruit. I think the last motor he had was that ERF four wheeler with the “dangle”. regards kevmac47

The one & only time I parked up a Biggleswade was at the Towers , never went back or visited any of the pubs. Cheers Larry

I can’t remember the name of the cafe but i think the pub could be The Sun Inn.

Aye Kev, another stop for them was the Woolpack at Sawtry just past Radcliffes Garage, I rememeber Bob Greenlees going to Thurrock one Sunday and wakening up on the Woolpack car park at 11.00am on the Monday, he was lucky because when he got to Thurrock he tipped & loaded there with empty Tote Bins for city road P &Gs. . Regards Larry.

Lived nr.Gailey island most of my life, never a cafe there but one a mile or so in either direction on the A449, The sunset at Penkridge, went in the late 80’s and the Farmhouse at Standeford towards W-ton which is still going !

Just done a quick search and found nowt so does anyone remember these…

1.Calveley Cafe next to Hollands Cheese on A51 just before Alpraham (house on site now)

2.one on A530 at Walleys Green between Crewe and Middlewich (now a bungalow)

3.one on A525 as you come out of Audlem towards Whitchurch(converted to house)

4.Bodelwyddan before the main A55 was built.

5.Just off A51 between Tarvin and Chester

1,3,4,and 5 were all open when I started driving in 1983 I can remember No.2 being open when I was a kid in the late 60’s

Was the one between Chester and Tarvin on the A54,after you turned off the A51 towards the A556? I recall a cafe on that
road on the R/H side on a hill with a grand view of the Welsh mountains to the west.I never used it but passed it many a time going back to Sheffield when on nights, and there were always one or two tankers parked up on dodgy nights out.

I think the A41 between W-ton and Chester more cafe’s per mile than most roads, I couldn’t begin to remember them all.

Remember The Haven at Skellow X roads. Ardwick Le Street, 24, 7 . Good food but stewed tea. Loads of parking space. The sleeping accomedation was ok but the beds were too close together for me, if you fell out of the bed you were in you missed the floor and went into the next bed, a bit dodgey in my mind eh. Happy Days 50s60s. I think its a little Chef now.

can anyone remember the marina transport cafe on the A61 at lofthouse nr wakefield.

Thanks Trev, think it was the Farmhouse, didn’t realise it was that far from the A5. Glad to hear that it’s still open. Must be 35 years :frowning: :frowning: since I was last in there.

That rings a bell, the Marina. I also remember the one at Newmillerdam on the A61 and the one at Hunslet on the A61,next door to Waddingtons.IIRC the M1 finished there at one time.

Can anyone remember the cafe on the A614 towards Holme and Spalding Moor, it was only known as Ham and Eggs and was a wooden bungalow with an old lady running it, the menu was just that. Ham & Eggs, she probably killed her own pigs and collected eggs from her own chickens. I knew several young school girls who worked for her in the summer holidays and weekends :stuck_out_tongue:

It became a bikers stopoff on the way to Bridlington and had many regular lorry drivers calling in on the way from the milk factory

hiya,
Chris remember the one at Hunslet very well our depot was just along the lane from the old engine works (I was doing a bit of tanker driving for Bayford’s) in those days and was a night driver so used to go in for my breakfast before going home to bed and call in late afternoon for my tea before starting work, it was the early 70s and still a free man it saved me having to attempt cooking “cremating” and having to wash up loads of Tetley’s in the fridge though, happy days.
