And then there was the dockers’ canteen in the Royal Docks in London.
Anyone know what that was like? I never got to try it out. We were banned you see. Just as we were made to use the ‘Asian’ toilets. Unclean lorry drivers.
Another fine example of the TGWU brotherhood.BTW, before anyone cries ‘racist’, I prefer the so-called ‘Asian’ toilets. So much more hygienic when clean, no bodily contact. Called ‘a la Turq’, there are many still in France.
Salut, David.
They were known as Spread Axle jobbies & like you say did have their advantages, unlike dockers

Harry the dockers would not be able to have a site like ours because they would be filling their pockets with all the posts and then striking because some body had posted wrong.
cheers Johnnie
Do not know if these have been mentioned.
The Flock-In in North woolwich Road Silvertown, that later became Georges Dinner when Brian took it over after his old place closed opposite Tate’s, served the best Tea & Toast in London (IMO when Brian ran it, now gone)
There was that dinning room type place in the Holloway Road not far after the Highbury Corner roundabout on the left when heading north, used to be a regular stop for Bowkers heading north on the start of the night trunk. They used to serve a good honest plate of food if my memory serves.
Hi guys and gals, I dont post much but love reading this forum. Anyway earlier on in this thread someone mentioned the cafe on the old A17 at sutton bridge the white cottage style one with the layby opposite but they couldnt remember the name of it well for the last 20 years I know of its been called Frankies cafe and a few years ago my now father in law used to have an old Bedford ambulance as a CB shop then he had a portakabin put there until he closed it in about 1997. And also the bus cafe on the A47 at kings lynn I think it is or was called Wendys never been in it though. Hope this helps jog some memories

Larry the the Red House Donny was another one nighter for me the top sheet on the bed I found to be a window curtain complete with rings which my little toe quickly found and every time i straightened my legs i pulled the bedclothes off my shoulders and it was a freezing night but it wasn’t a bad grub shop but never overnighted there again always stopped early or ran bent to make it to Ma Greens or “Norman’s” to the younger fellah’s always a warm bed there and clean.
