Old Cafe's

Heres another one from the past Fords of Longbennington spotless clean home cooked grub [Hams etc] good pint of tea local eggs & bonny lassies behind the counter one with big thepenies nice to look back on Regards Larry

The old Tony’s at Grantham was a good 'un,not the same as the other one that opened though.
My mate asked for the “wax treatment” at Tony’s.
Morleys at Markham moor was a dump I always thought, handy for a cuppa and a dodgy to Sheffield though.

Aye the old Tonys was first class good grub and plenty of it allways a hot fire going in the winter one of my regular stops in the fifties; cheers Larry PS, I never rated Morleys either nor the Truck stop thats there now.

I know the Quernhow has been mentioned on here somewhere and I used it regularly at one time. I then heard that it went downhill and I’m not sure if it’s still open. Why do cafes alter so much, from being spot on to dumps?

Did you ever use the Clock just before Scotch Corner? That was ok at one time, better than the cafe at Scotch Corner, never rated it.

Aye Larry Longbennington was a popular stop with a lot of the Ayrshire firms but mind they had the Chapel next door for beds it could be gie cold the one valor stove was struggling to keep it warm.
Another good stop was the Ribblesdale at Longton Preston ran by an ex driver John Weet and his family good food and clean beds. Eddie.

In the 1960’s when I was a wee lad my mum worked in the cafe at Beltring in Kent opposite what is now the Hop Farm just outside Paddock Wood, I used to get in her way in the summer hols and a driver from Thomas’s used to take me out with him sometimes in his Bedford TK. I think Thomas’s became TNT — we were certainly multidrop parcels coz I did the paper work for him. I think the truck were dark blue but it’s so long ago I may be thinking in black and white.

The cafe was joined to the Blue Bell Pub — it reopened a couple of years ago for a while and I called in for a breakfast one day — just before it burnt down (wasn’t me gov).

Anyone remember it?

I haven’t read all of this thread, but has anybody mentioned a long gone very fine cafe at the top of Standedge (A 62, before the M62 was built). Ma an Pa Johnson. The were two old folk who had no transport and they lived down the bottom in Greenfield. Every morning they would stand there for a few minutes and the first fella through loaded em up and took then up to the cafe. Always a free breakfast for him. Great cafe, great memories, happy days.

Hi Brian,a friend of mine wants to know the name of the cafe on the A62 Standedge Road on the left hand side westbound about a mile from Delph,it’s a hotel now apparantly.Have you or anybody else any idea? I never used Standedge much,Woodhead was my route (or off route  )from North West to North East, easier for a dodgy into Sheffield  .

Hi Chris was it "The Motormans " mind you I could be wrong again

It was called the Blue Peter Cafe next to brun clough resevior right on the top on the left hand side before the Horse & Jockey pub
Sammy I think the Motormans was further up.All I’ve found out is that the site is now occupied by the Saddleworth Hotel - courtesy of John Stanfield.
