okay as i say in the title i might be opening a can of worms hear but i been reading a few job sites and i seen that storbarts are advatiseing apprenterships where they will pay for you class 2 and class 1 licances… now this would suit me fine as not only would i not have to pay out right for a very expensive test but i would have a job at the end of it… as a lot of younge drivers i know have paid out the money for their hgv and struggle to get firms to take them on due to their lack of experiance… know i now alot of people have a gripe with storbarts but would it be a wise move to have a closer look into this, or take the risk of paying for the tests my self and now haveing a garenteed job at the end of it.?
Hmmm…well… it all depends on what commitment they expect from you afterwards and, crucially, what actual job and wage you would be on.
From what I’ve heard about the apprenticeship schemes I would be wary. Stobbies don’t pay experienced drivers very well so I would expect them to pay in bags of rice to newbies…
Worth looking into though. If you’re happy with the conditions, might be worth it.
PS…I’d get the company’s name correct before applying mate…

Stobarts
the basic wage is poor, but when you add up all the bonuses that they pay, it works out better than most companies

I know nothing about the apprentice scheme! Stobart are good! New or nearly new trailers/units uniform money always in the bank etc.
Planners are the real problem there! They are in the majority numbties! One or two who are the mutts nuts but mostly idiots and try talking to you (over the phone anyway) like their manager talks to them! If they pay for all your training including Dcpc then you could do worse and fund it all yourself! Trampers are not wanted so I’m led to believe! The train is the future!
Despite the haters on here! Working at Stobart will get you into most companies as they are very highly regarded for their training these days! Will look good on your CV!
Hmmm. It will also suggest you’re happy to work long hours for poor-ish money…each to and all that.
Ask yourself why Stobart’s are doing the apprentice scheme. There are plenty of drivers looking for work so why do they need to? It’s certainly not for the good of the apprentices. The reality is they are looking for cheap labour, they can then treat you like [zb] and you won’t be able to leave because of the contract. They will dangle the carrott of paying for your tests and training (to them, nothing much), and then pin you down for umpteen years flogging the guts out of you.
Ultimately you will pay for your test and more one way or the other. Stobart’s are doing it for their benefit not yours.
On balance I would steer clear…they’ll have you by the balls for the next few years and you’ll be run ragged mate.
often, companies do the apprenticeship scheme so that they can teach the new employee their way of working and procedures, an older, more experienced driver would sometimes find it harder to adapt to new ways of doing things
And obviously do those things for less pay. Older more experienced drivers are also harder to con and dangle carrots for.
obviously, from reading your posts regarding Stobarts, you have some form of personal gripe with the company
None at all. i merely answered the OP’s questions asking what people think. That’s what I think!
they may not be the best company to work for, but, i’ll bet you a years wage, that they are by far not the worst either
I agree!
to the OP, if you can get on the apprenticeship scheme through Stobarts, it is worth doing, i’m not sure what the job situation is like in your area, but, if you get on, you will receive your full training, your DCPC, full uniform, new(ish) vehicles that are replaced regularly
Have you personal experience of it then? You go to work to earn a living, not to get excited about the uniform. It’s important the OP fully understands what he is getting into. Stobarts are not the worst but they aren’t the best either and he needs to be aware that signing up is a major commitment - if you sign you’re stuck with it, unless you can pay your way out of it…which he can’t or he’d be paying for his licence!
the only down side is, you can’t really personalise your truck whilst on for them
That’s a plus point not a negative!!!
