okay as i say in the title i might be opening a can of worms hear but i been reading a few job sites and i seen that storbarts are advatiseing apprenterships where they will pay for you class 2 and class 1 licances… now this would suit me fine as not only would i not have to pay out right for a very expensive test but i would have a job at the end of it… as a lot of younge drivers i know have paid out the money for their hgv and struggle to get firms to take them on due to their lack of experiance… know i now alot of people have a gripe with storbarts but would it be a wise move to have a closer look into this, or take the risk of paying for the tests my self and now haveing a garenteed job at the end of it.?
if they take you on why not but if you leave before a certain time they will prob have a clause in your contract stating you owe the x amount
nearly there:

yea i thought they might its the same when my firm put me thro my forklift training… but im hearing so many diffrent storys about them… some saying they great some saying they aint… i realise its the same with every firm… its either storbarts or the royal logistics cause that another option im looking at…

Hmmm…well… it all depends on what commitment they expect from you afterwards and, crucially, what actual job and wage you would be on.
From what I’ve heard about the apprenticeship schemes I would be wary. Stobbies don’t pay experienced drivers very well so I would expect them to pay in bags of rice to newbies…
Worth looking into though. If you’re happy with the conditions, might be worth it.
PS…I’d get the company’s name correct before applying mate…

woops these sausage fingures of mine…
i think i will look into it tho because i really dont fancy sitting on a production line for the rest of my days… the main thing im worryed about is forking out the cash for my class 1 & 2 and they not being able to get the work… id rather be on a low wage for a while and get my experiance on a cv then after the time is up (how ever long they state i have to stay there) i can move on to another firm (thats the theory) think i just need to look into it maybe talk to guys that have done a simular thing… i wouldnt mind if they sent me tramping to be honest because i have no ties or commitments at home so theres nothing really keeping me around the place…

A lot of Stobbies stuff isn’t tramping these days it’s shifts. Some of the Stobbie lads on here will be able to advise better. Be careful they don’t take the ■■■■. Just because you’re new to the job doesn’t mean you should let them walk all over you.
Best thing you could do is to talk to someone that has already done it.
think you may be right… i spoke to a lad i know who works for mansle davies on the farm collections and and he asked a lad who just started with them about it for me cause he came from stobarts and his advice was not to bother… cause you be pushed to the limit… but wouldnt that be the same anywhere tho… if the firm has invested money into training you then they would want to make the most of their “investments”… but after a conversation with thhe said mansel davies guy he said that mansels would most prob take me on with no experiance cause they took a class one driver on a few week ago on tanker work… but unfortantly he toppled tke milk tanker on a conner (took it to fast) but i spoke to other drivers there and they said no they reqiure experiance.

Your thinking the same as me mate. Rather than paying for both the tests then finding work (Which is money I can’t really put down without some guarantee) it seems a good option, if you get in that is. Also the Academy’s not a massive distance to me.
I know when my mum trained to drive buses with Stagecoach, she had to stay at least 2 years or else had to foot the bill of the PSV Test, I could imagine with the two tests though it may be 4-5 years with Stobarts.

exactly when i looked at the prices my class 2 alone was going to set me back £1500 and thats if i passed first time… to be honest im not really worryed about how long they say i got to stay there cause i have the licanses in my pocket and i be doing the job and getting the experiance… that so many people seem to want befour hand… and my arguement is how are you ment to gain experiance when no one will give you a chance… i just wondering what they are like to work for (i realise im going to get a mixed responce) im not really botherd to low wages either cause im use to that have been since i left school… i noticed a few lads on hear saying stobarts have been laying drivers off but haveing gone thro the apprentership safe guard my job?

Not sure if it’d safeguard it but if they sacked you rather than you left then you wouldn’t have to pay for the course, as you say though it’d all be experience (and I know what you mean about catch 22).
From what I’ve seen and read in various places, they are the same to work for as every other company. Some will like them, some won’t. Just like the drivers get some stick, I’ve talked to some very good guys wearing the “elf” uniform, yet at the same time I’m sure there’ll be some morons out there.

yea i was thinking that so in theory its a win win for me… i get the relative experiance and my tests paid for… yea i realise alot about stobarts is image and let face it is that such a really bad thing?? yea i know a guy whos been driveing a 18 tonner for bout 16 years and he cant do anything on his own… cause since the first day he went in the lorry hes had a drivers mate with him was me for 4 years lol… but experiance doesnt allways mean a “good driver” who ever you work for… the driver in question who i was saying about quiet offten pulls out the yard with his taco on other work.
If you live near Port Talbot drive to this postcode SA12 7BR, there’s a bridge there over the M4, jump off the bridge onto the motorway below
Much better to opt for volantary suicide rather than enter into a work contract with Stobarts
I know nothing about the apprentice scheme! Stobart are good! New or nearly new trailers/units uniform money always in the bank etc.
Planners are the real problem there! They are in the majority numbties! One or two who are the mutts nuts but mostly idiots and try talking to you (over the phone anyway) like their manager talks to them! If they pay for all your training including Dcpc then you could do worse and fund it all yourself! Trampers are not wanted so I’m led to believe! The train is the future!
Despite the haters on here! Working at Stobart will get you into most companies as they are very highly regarded for their training these days! Will look good on your CV!

New kit means less likely to break down! Important when you want to get home on Friday earlyish!! I hear there are loads of people applying for the apprenticeship! Could be very difficult to get in! Good Luck though!

Hmmm. It will also suggest you’re happy to work long hours for poor-ish money…each to and all that.
Ask yourself why Stobart’s are doing the apprentice scheme. There are plenty of drivers looking for work so why do they need to? It’s certainly not for the good of the apprentices. The reality is they are looking for cheap labour, they can then treat you like ■■■■ and you won’t be able to leave because of the contract. They will dangle the carrott of paying for your tests and training (to them, nothing much), and then pin you down for umpteen years flogging the guts out of you.
Ultimately you will pay for your test and more one way or the other. Stobart’s are doing it for their benefit not yours.
On balance I would steer clear…they’ll have you by the balls for the next few years and you’ll be run ragged mate.

the basic wage is poor, but when you add up all the bonuses that they pay, it works out better than most companies

often, companies do the apprenticeship scheme so that they can teach the new employee their way of working and procedures, an older, more experienced driver would sometimes find it harder to adapt to new ways of doing things
obviously, from reading your posts regarding Stobarts, you have some form of personal gripe with the company
they may not be the best company to work for, but, i’ll bet you a years wage, that they are by far not the worst either
to the OP, if you can get on the apprenticeship scheme through Stobarts, it is worth doing, i’m not sure what the job situation is like in your area, but, if you get on, you will receive your full training, your DCPC, full uniform, new(ish) vehicles that are replaced regularly
the only down side is, you can’t really personalise your truck whilst on for them
If it part of the government apprentice scheme it will be £2.06 an hour
