Anyway Northampton was too near home for me to park up there. :grimacing:

hiya,
Sheltered life Chris, me too and being a pre-war baby and living in Liverpool during the war years some of my time was spent in air raid shelters, but have done a bit in bus shelters post-war, don’t want sheltered accomodation just yet though.

It just popped up in my mind, where or who did they sell all of that large machinery to, it must have took a few lorries & loads to shift a steel firm.

Norman it would mostly be exported and it would take a long time as I did a job for English Steel Corporation from Saint Charmonde when they bought a machine shop and it was around 4 months work to start off about 13 loads and then it was a load every few weeks I would say it was nearly 12 months from start to finish and this factory was no where near the same size as the big ones in Sheffield but it earned me a few bob as we were guaranteed 11 hours a day and double night out money from leaving yard until returning but as I changed trailers in Southampton I was OFFICIALLY away nearly 4 months.

Cheers Johnnie

Johnnie I was wondering why your wife had a smile on her face,     she must have been thinking about that time! :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

bit of a long un for a dodgy johnnie , southampton to sheffield , but you were as bad as chris , you would have managed it somehow . anyroad if you hadn’t put in an appearance for 4 months the dog would have thought you were a burglar and bit you cheers dave

Dave I was home every Saturday tea time went back down Monday morning then 4 very good days work and the gaffer must have been pleased as he gave me 4 days off on pay which was Thursday Friday Saturday and Sunday at 10 hours a day which worked out at 55 hours pay and I never had to touch my wages all the time I was away so we got a lot of work done on the house which we had just bought. I nearly felt guilty taking the bride out Saturday night when booked off in France

Southampton - well actually Hythe - Sheffield, easy on t’log book.I did it once,a friday afternoon, had to leave the motor at ISR Hythe for a Barking driver to collect on saturday.Train fare in pocket :laughing:that were for t’pub.Henry Smithers to Millbrook, empty car transporter to Oxford ring road, one of F B Atkins to M1/A52 and an Esso tanker out of Colwick to Tinsley.Five and half hours,no waiting.
That was only a short dodgy,us dee-dahs knew how to make it pay tha knows.

it was easy on the log book chris , anyone would stop for you , but every tom , ■■■■ and harry waves a tacho card now . just before i finished work , i dropped a n 8 wheeler off at ripley to have a new crane fitted . it took me all afternoon to get back to buxton , they can’t spare the 2 minutes to pick you up now

As you know Dave, years ago it was an unwritten rule, never pass a fellow lorrry driver,if the log book was held up you stopped, different day and age,we had the best times.
Cheers Dave.

It was easy Dave, you are right, not many went past without stopping and I never, ever failed to stop for one, sometimes I’d go out of my way to make it easier for him to get another lift or drop him at his motor.

Yes lads what you say is true about the magic book, but also as a squaddie, I never had to wait long for a lift when hitching a lift, and nine times out of ten , it was a lorry that stopped, specially when it was raining! Salt of the earth, maybe thats why i BECAME ONE, :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:
