Tartars live in Mongolia and Iāve never been there and me eyes arenāt slanted either.I never got three stripes, only made Corporal when I was doing my duty for Queen and country.Shunters were always tarred with the same brush, nasty pieces of work with no manners but I was an exception. If folk were ok with me then I was ok with them, simples tsssk.
I have to admit, however, that I used to lose my temper when shunting for Wincanton, what with all the sh**e they asked you to do,prats.

Couldnāt tap dance,I could slip, slide and slither when I was on a dodgy Harry.
Never wore a cap after that other photo was taken, but I used to do a good āSinginā in the rainā impersonation on that Terberg platform, made a change from shunting.
Them were tādays when we were on nights.
Chris I must say you looked happy on that photo, I was never that happy when wincanton took us over, Bulwarks yes very happy and when it was called Copenhagen Transport & now when Retired Old Pensioners.

Well with Bulwark at Chippenham and you at Northampton I reckon you pleased yourselves what you did,all those dodgy nights out at Watford Gap when you could have pushed a bit harder and got back to the yard.Disgusting,no wonder bloody lager was/is so expensive.
I reckon Wincanton got it right and sorted you lot out,a smashing company to work forā¦

Normās gone back to facebook Chris,heās probably less to fear on there .
Cheers Dave.
Oh no I have not Dave, we was told not to run over our time, if we did we was fined by the union, and reported by the firm to them Chris, I do think they liked us to park at Watford Gap, it was extra parking place for the firm.
Has for the cost of Lager, it cost to produce and delivery 50p per pint, it was those who we delivered it to made it cost £1-50p, so I am afraid Chris what you said is gone down in flames. Carlsberg chucked them out after 4 years, it was only when Carlsberg let Burton take of running control Wincanton got in. But everything went back to the way our firm used to run it. So to me they ran the driving force down, so no-one stopped.
If we ran over our time we got the boot - thatās if you got caught mind you.
Chris this was not your legal hours,it was you running time that was set by the shop stewards and agreed by the firm, I only slipped up once, it cost me sixty squid, it never happened again. Once I took a long time waiting for the lager due to it would not pass the chemist test, I told the manager I only had less than half hour before I was out of time, I was told to get out of the brewery so they could inform the customer I had left. I drove to the Red Lion Lay-by parked up, and got a lift back, and went back early in the morning with another driver from the brewery.

Aye,I see what you mean Norman but to be fined by a union sounds a bit harsh to me,I would have effed 'em off.Anyway, watter under the bridge as they say,I never ran under strict union/management controls, flexible operating was the thing in them days - when I say flexible I mean a bit for the firm and a bit more for yourself. When I went onto tankers and later onto Glass Glover thatās when things were strict and nothing to do with the union.
Never parked in the Red Lion lay-by but I heard a lot about it,tell us more,IIRC it was the A508 into Northampton off the M1?
norman , i donāt think you should tell chris about the red lion . a lad of delicate sensibilities like chris could be easily shocked you know . anon

Hmmm,of course you are right Dave, led a sheltered life me.I was a war baby as well - my mother shouted āwhoahā but it were too late.
Anyway Northampton was too near home for me to park up there.

hiya,
Sheltered life Chris, me too and being a pre-war baby and living in Liverpool during the war years some of my time was spent in air raid shelters, but have done a bit in bus shelters post-war, donāt want sheltered accomodation just yet though.
thanks harry long retired.
Chris I did not mind, after being in the army I was used to some funny rules, and the pay was good, I only stuck it for 22/23 years, but when wincanton told us we had to do 15 hours a day solo, 22 hours two man, I said no!, I took voluntry retirement. and never worked again after 62 years old, and I am glad, nothing stays the same.

I could write a small book about my Wincanton experiences but now is not the time and anyway itās in the past. However when they bought out Glass Glover in the 90s some of our drivers were overjoyed, thinking of the big money they could earn. They kept us on the old Glass Glover rate until the Littlewoods contract finished, closed the depot, refurbed it and opened it up on another contract. Many of the ex GGD drivers went back and they soon found out that the grass isnāt always greener on tāother side.
