Not being paid any extra for ADR work

Extra skills/qualifications = extra pay. No pay, no do. Simples.

Wish I was in the same world as you!

Nobody makes you do it.

As it stands, you have some leverage with your employer for them to pay for the renewal when it expires. If you take the hump and refuse to use it, they could (with some justification) be reluctant to fork out for it.

My advice;don’t cut off your nose to spite your face, keep doing as you do now and ensure they pay up to renew the ADR.

But that’s my point: I don’t want the thing if there’s no extra money in it. If I can earn exactly the same salary without it, why would I want it? If a few more ADR drivers took this attitude, there might be a bit more money in it sooner or later!

So you’d drop the qualification and stay at that job till you retire? You’re obviously an experienced ADR man, and you’re presumably aware of how much it would cost you to re-qualify if you had to look for another ADR job; quite apart from the fact that your then lack of qualification would put you at a disadvantage against other applicants who’ve got the ticket.

For the record, I currently have a Moffatt licence and in my previous job had a HIAB. Never got any more money for either but I didn’t expect it either; the HIAB gave me a better choice of work when I had to dip back into agency, the Moffatt is a vast improvement on handball.

To sum up, the days when you got extra brass for this sort of thing have largely disappeared; you’ve only got to look at the crap rates on offer for Class 1 drivers to realise that. With all due respect I think you’re being rather short-sighted on this issue, as I said earlier you’d be daft to drop the qualification just on a point of principle, however valid you may think it is. If it ■■■■■■ you off so much, hand your notice in and work for someone else.

I sort of agree with this ^^ AND I sort of agree with the OP.

The only thing I’d say is, if you were happy with the rate before, what difference does it make what anyone else is on?

I used to do a night trunk, and was paid £26k for doing it, I had my ADR but never took any goods within scope.
However another driver doing a night trunk for the same firm (actually a worse trunk than mine) was only paid £25k because he didn’t have ADR.
I didn’t agree with this as his job was actually worse than mine, took longer, drove further, finished later and for a grand less?

Even if I did take any ADR goods, other than flapping open my plates, it was no different. All my checks were always completed before I left the yard anyway, so all my ADR gear was in date and extinguishers were in the green and in date, everything was strapped anyway, so it really didn’t matter.

If the company is putting this other person through their ADR, then they’ll be the same as you, and on the same money still…

Unless you’re not happy with the rate (irrespective of what others get paid), then just crack on drive :sunglasses:

You took the job at the rate set the other driver got more for no ADR good on them its better than letting your ADR run out and then no job
