I’ve only just discovered this, since until recently there were just two of us on the night trunk, both with ADR tickets. However, recently another trunker has been employed with no ADR licence, who is on exactly the same salary. Now, I have no desire to see her salary lowered, but I also don’t see why I and the other trunker should take on the extra responsibility that goes with ADR work for no extra money. We pull ADR freight every single night, sometimes quite a lot. The company’s attitude is that they pay for our ADR licences (they haven’t paid for mine yet), so they don’t have to pay us any extra. To which my response is that I don’t collect qualifications for fun or to put on my mantlepiece, I only do them so I can earn a bit more. Is this common these days, or are there companies out there who pay a good extra whack for ADR work? If not, I think I might just let my ADR lapse when it comes up for renewal. What’s the point in having it otherwise?
My place pay £1 an hr more for adr.
£1 a day down this way but now changed to 20 pence an hour.Never seen an Adr driver in a Porsche or Ferrari yet.
Do you work any harder with an ADR ? If you paid for it your self don’t use it if they paid for it count that as your bonus. I would have thought you will take the same care over peoples goods hazardous of not.i don’t think many people pay extra for carrying packages i think the extra money comes in when you learn an extra skill like operating tanks ect.

Bang on the mark there
WTF I got a full DCPC card do I get paid Extra
Having an ADR ticket just makes you less sackable.
It’s no more responsibility.
If anything goes wrong, you drop the trailer and pass the book.
The load you have wheather it’s chemicals or blow up dolls, is transported in the same careless manner.

You might well do if as many old hands as predicted here get out of the game when DCPC kicks in…
Though i expect the reality of minumum wage on 12 hour shifts on security type jobs, or fork trucking all day, might see many of them hurriedly catching up on the course and returning to driving in due course.
If they put you through, and it counts for cpc, swallow it. If not, tell them to poke it. The extra responsibility is worth the money. If you’re on groupage, you have to check every dgn is bang on, and they’re normally not. It’s a niche market. You wouldn’t take a job doing heavy haulage for the same as delivering baked beans, would you?! Tear it up mate
I never got paid any extra for Adr or moffet, and yes it was extra hassle.
I let them both lapse.
I paid for my ADR myself, not to earn more money, but to make me more employable.
OP…
You took the job knowing it was ADR and agreed on the rate …
The newbie might be put through theirs with a clause that they will repay the cost if they leave before time spent.
In principle I can see your point but not sure 20p/hr is worth getting upset about especially if your all doing the same trunk.
Did my ADR, Tankers, Hiab and forklift when I put myself through my CPC, not to get extra dosh (would be nice though) but to increase my employability.
As it is I’ve had 2 shifts in 3 years where I needed my Hiab so will probably let them lapse.
As it stands, you have some leverage with your employer for them to pay for the renewal when it expires. If you take the hump and refuse to use it, they could (with some justification) be reluctant to fork out for it.
I agree with what others have said about the greater scope of employability. Regrettably, the minimum wage, for all the good it did lower-paid workers, has also killed off pay differentials and we can expect to see more of this sort of thing; the long-term result being thousands of workers with useless NVQ’s yet very few with genuine practical trade training.
My advice;don’t cut off your nose to spite your face, keep doing as you do now and ensure they pay up to renew the ADR.
If it p1ss3s you off that much just leave.
6 Pound a day extra at my place
Had this problem on agency quite a few years ago doing work for frieghtliner, we always got extra if you went in there with ADR licence, then one week they decided they weren’t paying extra anymore, my response was that’s fine, I will leave it at home in future! Nothing was said about that! And still carried on with them doing normal loads.

Maybe not. But you are still more qualified and also have the likelihood of extra responsibility, especially if it goes wrong. Pulling explosives or corrosive goods is always going to warrant a little more cash than those pulling toilet rolls.
Wages aren’t just paid based on hours and how much lifting you have to do!

I used to work for the same company, and it was the only reason why i left and moved onto tankers. Seem to have found a nice night job. I see a few of the old company lorrys on the M6. Keep smiling

Yes, and that’s why I’m happy enough to carry on pulling ADR at the current rate even though I paid for my ticket myself. But I’ll be letting the company know that ADR does come with extra responsibilities - you can bet the company charges the customers more for it - and that if they want me to keep on taking on those responsibilities, they can pay me a bit extra when my licence needs renewing. Otherwise, I’ll not be renewing my ticket when it runs out, no matter who pays for it. Why would I?
