Not allowed to leave night heater on

Told my dad once that the night heater had packed up and went out in to the yard to check we still had about 100 blankets folded in the back and then asked what was wrong with them ? :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Yeah but that generation was when men were men…this younger generation are mostly nancies :grimacing:

Was told by another driver a few years ago that his boss charged them a pound a night to use the night heater, he charged them all year round too, can’t remember the name of the firm but they had yellow rigids on furniture deliveries and were from the Nottingham area.

worked with 1 guy that wouldnt repair the broken night heater (it was gonna cost £25 to fix) wasnt a problem for me as i just used the 6 cylinder heater instead.

Haha…there’s always more than one way to skin the thingy :grimacing:

As a Transport Manager,I have just settled several accounts, paid out cheques for thousands.Honestly in the scheme of things a night heater left on even for 24 hours a day would not break the bank. Why ā– ā– ā– ā–  your hard working drivers off? They can always work it up ya.I know I was tramping for 25 years.I hate this kind of penny pinching, pound a night crap.

Even ā€œthat generationā€ turned into nancies as soon as they got a motor with a night heater! Best thing ever invented…

The amount of fuel they don’t use is tiny anyway! It’s about 200 ml an hour if run flat out… Which they rarely do. So realistically 1 litre a night.

Tell them to have a quick recap on the H&S at work regulations regarding providing a habitable and reasonable rest area for workers away from home. They HAFT to provide you with a way to stay warn. (Air temp that is before anyone suggests a coat!)

I’m the other generation :grimacing: and yes, I would agree with you, in lorry terms, they are one of the best things invented. In this day and age, there is no need for anybody to either be cold or to sleep in cold conditions.

I remember the first time I ever saw one o those night heaters I was on the dock rd in Liverpool met this, tanker driver (sounded like tanker ) he was selling tobacco 50p wallet FFS the year 1980 me and my mate were astonished ā– ā– ā– ā–  sleeping wie that thing banging away all night.listen Son a quick chuff wie Pamela done us for a night in the cab.

Go around the transport office unplug/turn off all the heaters saying lead by example these cost more.
I’ve noticed slightest forecast of cold weather they get out the fan heaters across the office or the LPG heaters.
Goes to show rules are made up by people who have never slept in a truck or even how things work it’s a classic case of ā€œI don’t know or wouldn’t know where to start how to do your job but my book says you’re doing it wrongā€ :unamused:
If it’s a big firm I wonder if there range rovers pre heat in the morning before they go to work

Jelliot:
Don’t use the steering wheel either as it causes ware on the front tires, and keep your foot of that peddle on the right.

Actually just sit in it all day don’t go anywhere and say ā€œvroom vroomā€, if the TM approaches your truck.

My first night heater was in a 1985 DAF3300. It was like a hotel after spending many years in a cold cab. I than started doing Eastern Europe without one and if anybody says they make you soft. Then I will stay soft. :stuck_out_tongue:

1984 Volvo B10M Jonkheere coach…we didn’t call them night heaters then…they were known by generic name of Webasto - who made them.
Brill - when it worked. It used to roar when working correctly - but it was in the rear locker & drivers bunk was in front of coach, so no probs. with noise. It used to pump coolant through then via engine/coach heating system, so whole coach was toasty. Even used it as a cold-start device, as it warmed engine too- as I said…brill!!! It was non-programmable - just on or off, but thermostat could be set on dimmer switch.
When no passengers were on we (me & co-driver) used to walk round coach in underwear - even on coldest winter days…but that’s another story!!!

You sound like a pretty reasonable manager, wish the rest of them were like you…

That was the same in the case of early 20th century housing for the working classes too with casualties caused by pneumonia to match.

All the night outs I did were during the 1980’s with old wagons without night heaters. But even then I just left the engine idling with the heater on most of the time the only downside being the exhaust fumes used to get dragged in by the fan. There’s nothing good about damaging your health by living and sleeping in a cold and damp environment.

I would run the truck all night if the night heater is not allowed on, I used to work for a firm where my night heater was broken, I asked for it to be fixed and I was told no so I ran the truck all night to keep warm.

The daf I’m in at the minute turns its self off after a bit ? Have to keep turning the [zb] back on in the night …

Check the inlet and outlet( inside the cab) if they get blocked they shut off to stop overheating,

That is just so wrong in so many ways - I think it is a sad state of affairs if the company can not be bothered to provide the driver with such a basic ā€˜comfort’. Temporarily forgetting about the driver for one minute, how about the cost associated with running the engine all night not to mention the damage it does to the engine.
