but by doing the 80p job you could still show a profit with cheap diesel so your loss would not be as much
i must say i can see no wrong in this as in business you have to balance the books on the right side, also i think that as we pay to be in europe and there for the free movement of goods is suposed to make british firms more competitive with our oposites across the water.
As has already been stated on this thread its the M.Ps that are the real villans and always have been and any changes can only come from them but they wont untill enough people refuse to be used or untill they have to pay the same as everyone else, if they did not get everything paid for them and they had to pay the extra costs out of there pocket how quick would they put prices up?
north surrey haulage:
i’m sorry but i take offence at being called a cowboy especially when the only argument for doing so is because you buy goods/services cheaper than sombody else
Sadly I’ve found out I’m appear to be a cowboy because I today ordered some CDs and DVDs online, and from an American website at that, because they are way cheaper than my local HMV is doing them for and it appears that it’s not ‘British’ to do that.
It appears that odds has managed to tar every transport company in the UK a cowboy because every one of them will be getting something cheaper than somebody else, either due to the area they live in, the volume they buy or the deal they have managed to negotiate.
That i right i even tar our own government with this brush cus they claim back european subsidies but dont pass them on to us.
The rates are not being cut by owner-driver and small hauliers going abroad to get cheap fuel, The rates are cut by the big hauliers with bulk buying power and offering cheap haulage to get lucrative warehouse contracts. Going to get fuel from France is legal the cowboys are the one that work without operators licences, use red diesel, don’t maintain their motors.
Ok not all hauliers can get over the water on a weekend to diesel up due to location, but other business costs will be cheaper in other parts of the country, so it levels things up.

Rock n roll Muckles, the fat cats are the pits for rate cutting, thats my belief also.

A thought has crossed my mind as to who would do a job for say 1pound per mile or 80p per mile? to make more profit you would take the 1 pound per mile but if your cost came to 99p the profit would not be as much as 80p.That makes the difference as to wether you undercut to get the jobs cus your cost are less??.Thus you are doing things on the cheap at the cost of others !!!
EH
If you take a job at £1 a mile and your costs are 99p per mile you make a profit of 1 p.
If you take a job at 80p a mile and your costs are 99p per mile you loose 19p.
Who stays in business longer?
I would think it sound business sense to buy your fuel at the cheapest place wherever it is, when I’m down the road and I see a garage that says 73p a litre then I dive in as it’s 79p a litre here. So what’s the problem, I just wish I was closer to the Ferry/ Tunnel.
I make a very good living now, but if the oppertunity arose why should I not increase my profit. That is the whole point of being in business.

if you read my posts you would have seen that i aint to bothered about conti boys buying over there to use over here.I just feel its unfair trading if you dont go over the water to drive. The running cost can be as much as 50% lower with lower cost fuels.Just my opinion this is all i hear from my boss is the cost of fuel, then again think of it this way if people had always bought there fuel over here nightowl would not be in the hands of the receivers as they are.
I always thought any transport company should be as competative as possible, but as you point out the running costs can be as much as 50% lower with lower cost fuels… Now correct me if I am wrong but shouldn’t north surrey haulage be intitled to be as competative as any European driver tramping around the UK? is he not in competition with the likes of Betz and friends from outside of UK running on this cheap Derv. and if so is he not being fair by paying the same price as them for his fuel? mind you he is still at a disadvantage as I would suspect most foreign hauliers fill up in Luxemburg, Spain or other cheaper Countries than France when ever possible, but that is the way it is, Did you complain that it was unfair when all the French drivers used to fill up in UK back in the olden days when we had the cheapest Derv? I doubt it.
I would happily give UK PLC all my custom if only they were remotely competative… The naivety of any one who buys Fuel in England just because it is British and we should all buy British is beyond my comprehention… As for Nightowl, they knew what the figures were for the business they bought off BP, and I am sure that even if north surrey haulage didn’t travel abroad for fuel he wouldn’t drive all the way to one of Nightowls site to buy derv that wasn’t competativly priced so that argument is a bit lame
hope I’m not presuming to much on North surrey haulage’s behalf
jimti you dont presume too much at all my dear friend and i’m touched by the support i have recieved from my “genuine” colleagues in the industry
I run a 4x4 on lpg at 32p per litre I would be a right muppet to put unleaded in it at 74p
makes perfect sence to me so i voted canny

PS don’t let “Just Testing” see this thread he’d have you hung drawn and quartered for not paying top whack for everything you buy.

you seem to have mis-spelt Trolling
Im working out of most of the east coast ports supplying traction to a Dutch company for £■■■ per mile in the UK. Now they want me to do direct deliveries & collections ex Belgium, for the same rate!
I can save £800+ per month on deisel filling up in Belgium, so I’d be a fool not to , wouldnt I!
