No pay rise for 6 years

NewLad:
If your house is in - equity it would be something to think about. Seriously though why not speak to bank about going on interest only for a while till your wife can get a job with more hrs. Is it really worth her traveling 60 miles a day for reduced hrs? Would you be better off doing no overtime at all her quitting work and tax credits making it up + less outgoing only one car no childcare costs. All these things are worth thinking about. Speak to your lenders tell them your struggling you may be surprised they may freeze the interest for 6 months.

thanks for the constuctive input mate…not sure on how the credits thing work, thought the goverment had cut back on all that money for nothing type thing, why would they give us money if my wife gave up her job■■? i will certainly speak to the bank and see what they suggest though…we cant go on like this, were existing, not living.

I take it you live in Wales? WTF you doing with your money? If you were in London I could understand the struggling but outside of London you should be OK on two incomes.

Our household income is about £30k, mortgage is £450 a month. We’re not struggling for money or anything like it. Go abroad every year on holiday, two cars and a motorhome, kids get pocket money/savings and ew put money in the bank.

moneysavingexpert.com and get on the forums as well as looking through the main website. There’s a wealth of info on there. Post a statement of affairs on the debt free wannabee forum and see where you’re wasting money.

No one is forcing you to stay there look for another job.

Or relocate?

We kept running a bit low on money every month. I was away for long periods of time, So i naturally blamed her indoors. When i got chance to set up internet banking i noticed several direct debits that were ridiculous. They were set up at an agreed amount years ago, Then sure enough they started stealing from my bank account. I cancelled all direct debits and lived happily ever after.

i earn decent money - i put away around £250 p/w — i live by myself, i rent my flat, i live with my dog (my dog is way better company then any girl i ever met) my overheads are as low as they can be and my bank balance doesn’t get hammered everytime i get paid.

i’ve seen it elsewhere too the lads i work with some married some not and it’s the ones that aren’t married with sprogs that have the nice things like nice car, nice house, plenty cash in the bank etc… that don’t need the money advice service…

in terms of benefits — why the ■■■■ should i be forced to pay for your sprogs    if you can’t afford them then you shouldn’t have had them and i got no sympathy for you at all…

as we say up here “you makes your bed - now lie in it” and ffs stop complaining when she’s spent all your money that too goes with the territory…

ThrustMaster:
You earn more than me plus you have your wife’s wage on top and yet you’re still struggling? :open_mouth:

You must be upto your eyes in debt.

Take a pay cut, and default the debt. Better to earn £300pw with no debt (because you’ve outrun it) than £500 with stacks of it to pay (because you’re still paying, believing that somehow you still HAVE to!)
The first part of income isn’t included for any action that court-appointed collectors might attempt. They have to leave you enough to “live on”, which effectively means that if your wage is at or below this threshold, then they can’t touch you, because you have “no spare income to hand over”.
The courts award £1 per month against such defaulters - that is IF they actually pursue it, which a lot don’t. They will just give up, and not bother because they know when they’re beat. No point spending hundreds in court actions just to be told “You’ll get £1pm out of this guy, because he’s on a low income”.

Wow, you can see the govenments divide and rule policy first tested under maggie is working well, working blokes in the same industry at each others throats, the bloody politicians must be loving this no wonder we’re such easy pickings.

WW my humble piece of advice is to look carefully at every outgoing you have, that Sky package is costing you about £25 cos that £17 is after tax and NI, and thats only one item.

What everyone has to bear in mind is that interest rates are going to rise at some point soon, they are artificially low because the govt won’t be able to service the increasing national debt when they do rise and fiscal calamity will follow, this is quite apart from what it will do to people already dropping behind.

I lived with 15%+ mortage interest rates before, i sincerely hope they don’t reach that level again but its not beyond the realms of possibility.

The most important thing to you is the roof over your head, so my advice to anyone is…pay as much of that bugger off if you do nothing else.

Get rid of one car if you can, and make sure the one car you have is paid for and affordable, cut every cost you can and pay as much off your house as quickly as possible to lessen the impact of the forthcoming interest rises.

Buy things only if you need them, will seond hand do? then buy second hand, less than half price washing powder at the supermarket? buy £100 quids worth, you’ll save £100+ over the next 5 years, small victories but they all add up.

A lot of the problems modern couples face IMO is that they, and young Brit women here have to take their fair share of responsibility for this too, is that they have unrealistic expectations, believing the garbage the telly churn out where everyone leads a celebrity lifestyle, sod me even the superupthemselvestars are flogging perfume now cos they’re down to the last $50mill in the account…the relevent celebs actually make me want to throw up, every bit as bad as tony wmd blair, never got enough money the greedy sods, bloody worshippers of mammon.

We can’t all be celebs on fooballers wages, we’re working class people here whether we own our nice houses or not.

My old Geordie mate had the right experession when he said the trouble is some don’t know which pot to ■■■■ in, that sums up the problem with too many people these days, (not aimed at you here WW so please take no offense this is a general comment) the have been told and actually believe they are middle class by politicians and others when they are and always will be working class.

That sums it up nicely! a very wise old man told me this, keep the roof over your first, then have a very good bed and a very good pair of shoes! :sunglasses: then you can feed yourself! :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:

Totally agree with the finances bit of this as I used to live on my own with no wife and kids. Had my own 4 bedroom house, nice land rover discovery, holidays abroad (at least 2 weeks( twice a year, various weekends abroad too), meals out, DVDs galore etc etc, thousands saved in the bank, bills at a minimum, do what I want when I wanted to. HOWEVER I do not regret for one minute meeting my wife and her 3 daughters. They have brought love and joy into a life which whilst I had a lot was severely lacking in the emotional stakes. I earn a fraction over £7 p/h (21k pa) my wife doesn’t work as she is a student (something she has gone back to which I fully support her in), we do not have SKY at all just Freesat, we run 2 cars, a car for me for work and a car for her to pootle round in with the girls (karate, army cadets, swimming) we pay nearly £500 per month rent as we have re-located (to a more expensive to live in area!). The food cupboards are always full, no credit, no HP, household bills only. 4 of us have mobiles all be it pay as you go, we have a dog and a rabbit (the furry kind not adult toy kind!!!), we go to the cinema at least once a month and eat out at least once a month. We have’t got swanky furniture (mostly off Ebay or Freecycle). We went all-inclusive to Tenerife last year for 12 days and had various holidays through the Sun’s offer. This year already we have 2 holidays booked through the SUn. Other times we visit relatives in other areas of country which is always all-inclusive!!! And here’s the kicker we can still bank £150.00 per week and we have another baby on way! So I’m sorry lifestyle wise I have never had it so good and would never go back to those single days!!! TIN HAT ON

How did you afford a 4 bed house a land rover and be able to save thousands extra on your wages as a driver

You’ve missed out your benefits in your calculations…

When I lived in Sussex…I had a really good mate, older than me, so wiser.
He always told me to get the mortgage paid off as soon as I could. I did that in 2011.
The best advice ever given to me, it has changed my life dramatically and has brought me so much freedom, sanity and tranquility :sunglasses: The ones in power would hate this if everyone did the same, they would be of no use to us :imp:

Spot on ATT, the most liberating day of your life.

THEY haven’t got you by the cobblers any more.

People seem to have forgotten what is a luxury and what is a necessity. Not so long back I was waking my son up at 5.30am then putting him and me on a pushbike taking him to the inlaws to look after while I went to work, then my missis would pick him up after her night shift and not sleep. We also did without a tv for six months cos we couldn’t afford the licence.

Now im not after sympathy im just sayin sometimes you have to remember these things we have are luxuries and not necessities. So cut the arse out of it

21k is about £300 take home per week isn’t it? and you bank £150 per week? so you live on £600 per month? Your rent is £500, so you have bills, holidays, cars, phones, food etc on £100 per month?

assuming you’re creaming benefits then?

I think it’s very telling of the society that we live in today that a bloke comes onto a forum looking for advice and understanding and gets abuse! You have to be in quite a low place to share your troubles like this, and it seems to me the OP is running out of ideas and is seeking a few new ideas and wondering if he’s the only one.

He’s not the only one struggling, and sometimes just knowing that can help. There have been some positive posts (nice one Juddian), but Jesus, do we have to kick someone when they’re down?

There has been a recent post (I think it was Farboroughboy11) about him stopping to help a motorist who had just stopped, with no lights on. A lot of people would have given him a load of abuse and driven round him (probably very close to show him how stupid he was), while beeping the horn, rather than thinking that he might need help. Good show FB11, but seriously, some of us are turning into very uncaring people in this industry. Stop it! Thanks

absolutely agree. The problem isn’t so much the OP managing his money, it’s the fact his employer hasn’t raised his pay in 6 years, not even in line with inflation ffs!!!

Main issue here is LGV drivers’ wages stink and are getting worse…

At what point do drivers say ‘■■■■ this, I’m packing in and doing something else’

What else is there? Not a lot in some parts of the country.

I think Juddian is right. Too many things are ‘must haves’ that are, in reality, luxury items. People now live a materialistic lifestyle fuelled by the crass ‘celebs’, the majority of whom I wouldn’t ■■■■ on if they were on fire. Sky, a medium that exceeds ‘normal’ TV in only there are now 500 channels of crap to endure instead of 70…hugely expensive broadband that they could sell us for pennies but 'cos they know everyone wants it they charge a fortune for and that’s the tip of the iceberg…

I must admit, after reading the OP’s post and then seeing in the paper some thick brained Premier League footballer is now on 100k a WEEK makes my ■■■■ boil…

We live in a society that pays footballers 100 grand a week and surgeons that save lives 100 grand a year…

And yet the only thing a lot of folk care about is owning the newest mobile and watching appalling ‘reality’ TV… :unamused:
