No More Tax Free Travel Allowance!

Had a email from the agency…

From April 2016 new government legislation/tax laws commence. They restrict temporary workers being able to claim tax relief for ‘Travel & Subsistence’ expenses for travelling to and from a temporary workplace; Because of this change in the law we believe that in most cases weekly tax relief for travel & subsistence expenses will no longer be valid.

Demand substantially higher rates then, or quit the agency and get a full time job as I have.

yep that’s is correct we had the same info. this is for paye drivers/workers not ltd/umbrella and winseer why would the rates go up? sorry you cant claim a tax relief so please can you put the rates up?

its like the budget not increasing the personal threshold as much as I thought and trying to claim an increase!

Why should you get a tax free travel allowance,us full timers still have to drive to work everyday if not tramping.

It could be a good thing, and MAYBE reduce traffic on the roads a bit…

I did a contract for quite a while where I traveled 80 miles around trip each day, and only did that because of the mileage allowance. I’m buggered if I’d do it again for the same rate if i wasn’t getting that tax relief! The meal allowance always did my head in though, as everyone eats and should be able to sort themselves out, whether they are limpers or FTW…

I’m talking about the rates that the driver is supposed to be in control of when employed on a “self-employed expense-claiming” umbrella thingy.

Of course, if your employer is paying full stamp for you, and you are PAYE - then you won’t be getting “expenses” in the first place eh? :smiling_imp:

That’s one’s own hourly rate set as a self-employed person is supposed to be able to do…

nope this is the scheme that was brought in for temp paye workers - they were given 2 years maximum to claim tax relief as they were ‘normally’ travelling to different work places, it was brought in to assist with a flexible workforce - as with anything no doubt abused so now stopped.

Bugger - I could do with some spare cash to help pay for all the driving fines I keep picking up.

Never understood how an agency driver could travel miles to work for the 9p tax back per mile. What car can you run for 9p?

Dunno but for me with a 60 mile round tip it adds up to over £5 per shift worked… and every little helps.

Its 45p not 9p per mile

You do not get taxed on the 45p so if you are paying 20% tax then you save 9p as mac12 mentioned - that’s how I understood it anyhow.

Most drivers only get the tax back on the 45p, thats 9p at 20% tax

Not sure thats right as on my payslips the total used as expenses an offset against is 45p x miles done plus the £10 a day food. Deffinatly not 9p

I’m guessing you’re still entitled to the 45ppm - but just not the 9p tax relief per mile claimed.

My Mondeo only costs 11p per mile including servicing and tyres.

I suppose the “abuse” would have been no more than toffee nosed expense claimers do - probably put ALL their vehicle mileage in as fuel receipts…

its amazing how a ‘worker’ gets his scheme stopped but MP’s have so many thing they can claim expenses for and fiddle the system like mad without any issues.

Because I am losing the travel allowance I will have to consider whether it is worthwhile continuing with my current placement as it is a 60 mile commute and other work is available closer to home, it’s a shame as I was really enjoying it but I do have to practical.

Glad it’s that frigging easy.
