Oh, and finally, as for Manston becoming an operating airport again, it’s not going to happen. It’s gone bust again and again. It can’t compete against the massive capacity, ease of use, diversity of destination, etc. of Gatwick or Heathrow.
Dan.
It might not make a great passenger airport, but it could be an ideal cargo hub, Dual carriageway linking it to the motorway network and closer to the Channel Tunnel than any other airport. I was going in there regularly before it closed last year, most of the people I spoke to felt the owners want it to fail as an airport as they bought it for the land not for the airport and wanted to get the use changed.
But obviously that is from people who were probably about to lose their jobs and therefore weren’t great fans of the airport owners, so could be taken with a pinch of salt, be interesting to hear your take on it?
Transport aviation would be great for job creation. Everything was set up - as you say the motorway links were all finished. There was also a large engineering facility built next to the airport for jet engine maintenance, (see summit-aviation.co.uk), which I think is going to be hard to operate without aeroplanes so more job losses to come there. That’s without mentioning its use as an aeroplane graveyard where they dismantled end-of-life airframes. The problem is it was running at a loss of about £10,000 a DAY.
The NIMBYs didn’t help the situation by blocking night flights. That stopped any flights after a certain time because if there was the chance of the flight being delayed past a certain time then they couldn’t fly to Manston.
It’s changed hands a couple of times recently. The most recent owners don’t want it as an airport. They claim it’ll be a movie studio and other such bumpf but believe me it’ll be housing. More money for them so they can sell and move on to the next project.
As a local person I think its days are numbered. I’d like to see it open as it would bring growth to the area

Dan your right I live in manston,
The bloody village idiots are a pain in the arse!! ,
first they don’t want night flights then their moaning about the airport shutting down so they now want to save it , then it’s we don’t want the land redeveloped or a high speed train station and now it’s we don’t want the lorries,
The idiots don’t know what they want or what to moan about next, may be they should flood it with are travelling friends then that would seriously give them something to moan about .
I think it will end up as housing and that will really give the NIMBY’s something to complain about must be room there to build a small town.
but once you’ve built the houses where do the people work there’s very little in that area, I’m lead to believe so it’s hundred of people commuting each day, well at least the dual carriageway will get used.
The Nimby’s ought to be careful about how many things they get rejected, or they might end up with something they really don’t want. A few of the NIMBY’s round RAF Coltishall spent years complaining about the aircraft noise, and were gloating when it closed but weren’t so pleased when they turned the airbase into a prison for ■■■ offenders.
Manston would be perfect place to house illegal immigrants.

Also back the Argument of Why buy a house NEXT to an airport if you don’t like noise?
We get a lot of this at Silverstone. People moving in next to a race track then complaining about the noise. We even had one complain that he was there before it was a race track so he shouldn’t have to put up with it. My response at a public meeting at which he spoke was that no, it wasn’t always a race track, do you prefer the noise of a Bomber Command RAF base then? We could arrange a couple of Lancs to fly all night if you want?

We have to remember that although road haulage is an important industry I ain’t the only industry. What annoys me about all this is Dover port and eurotunnel are private company’s and if they where factory’s or something else causing disruption like these they would have the book thrown at them and billed for the policing ect and told to get there house in order
No we are not the only industry, but without ours, no others would work so perhaps a little consideration is in order?
As for the Port of Dover and EuroTunnel, while they are private companies, this problem is not of their making. They are as much victims of the French industrial relations problems as the drivers. Kent police should invoice the French government for Operation Stack. Perhaps then Hollonde would do something about the lazy dock workers. Even the TfL Tube drivers wont cause this much disruption!
Actually most of it is of there own making the delays at the port are mainly down to industrial action with one firm ceased trading ( owned by euro tunnel) another parking a cpl of boats up and the rest of its boats only on the Dunkirk route . The port and Euro tunnel are both pretty much running at capacity so any delay even minor ends up with trucks cueing on the roads around them what will happen in a cpl of years time as the industry grows they will not cope .

You forgot to mention they also whinged about Thanet Earth and most recently the solar farm.
Out of site, out of mind!

This is entirely of Eurotunnels making! They’ve done quite well in keeping quiet the fact these strikes were caused by their meddling in the ferry business.
