Let’s be fair a 50 mile diversion is daft don’t you think ? What about the showground at Detling that’s about a 2 mile diversion surely that’ll be a better option.
dover council are a load of muppets,A249 detling ,M2 to manston, then when its all over send the hgvs back down the A299 to the A2 and straight into dover, waste some diesel but I cant see where the A256 comes into it,as regards the nimbys let the police arrest them ,simple, hit them In the pocket with fines

not a bad idea
To be fair, would anyone of us want that amount of lorries trundling round our local roads that were never designed to cope with such a volume, it’ll be a nightmare for the locals.
Very handy for the new Con MP for Thanet South mind, can hardly re-open Manston Airport when it becomes a permanent lorry park, box ticked…should have elected Farage…

Don’t know how big it is inside but must be a fair size and it’s about half way between the M2 and M20, maybe they got some big event lined up which they couldn’t possibly cancel !!!

There can’t be much hard ground there, can they? Could be difficult in the rain. Big airports tend to have long stretches of tarmac, which is why they’re used for storing Rovers nobody wants.
Well at least they have started to allow lorries with perishables ,and livestock to bypass stack and go directly to the port/train
To be honest have very little sympathy for the people of Kent every time over the last 10 years or so a suggestion has been made to sort out the parking problems in Kent the people of kent have objected so hard to feel any genuine sympathy for them another bunch of people who want the goods but would rather they delivered by magic than by lorry
Stacks are nothing new, we had them when running through to Poland and beyond in the early nineties at Frankfurt de Oder. Although for only about 24 hours on average but stacking nevertheless. Used to have some bloke on a moped come and bang on your door if you were asleep and then a whole herd of you would go fill the lorry park again to get clearance and so it went on.
Oops, double post !
Manston is a knee jerk solution to the operation Stack debate which has been going on for years and nothing long term was ever done to solve the problem, because it was normally a few days disruption then forgotten about by the Media, Politicians and the locals.
A bit the like the illegal immigrant problem in Calais, they’ve been a problem for years affecting Hauliers, drivers and the people of Calais and nobody gave a [zb] until it finally went critical.
And of course if using Manston works, then the media isn’t really going to bother covering the plight of drivers stuck in it, if the rest of Kent is kept running.

It won’t be much of a plight once they’re there; it’s an old airport so there’ll be toilets, perhaps a lounge, and food. It could even be set up as a truckstop for when they don’t need it for Stack. The only problem is that it’s just miles out of the way for Dover and the Channel Tunnel, and will result in more traffic being diverted along already congested and/or unsuitable roads, like the M25 up to junction 2 (no free flow lane from the south), the A229 and A249 (perhaps even the A228), the A20 and A2 through Dover and the A258 up to Ramsgate.
Manston would be the perfect solution if it was on the M20, sadly it’s not and the roads that would be used would screw up East Kent more than operation stack does now.
Detling showground is fine until it rains, it’s mostly grass and just not suitable for parking trucks.
The old Shorncliffe Barracks near Cheriton are very close to the M20 and might be an alternative, probably room for 500 trucks there on concrete.
It is not primarliy a matter of nimbys, the people mainly objecting are those who want Manston to continue as an airport rather than a housing development.
Detling and Folkestone racecourse won’t be used because if it rains then there will be potentially large numbers of lorries stuck in the mud. The stupid thing about this current plan is that it will be used in addition to a blocked of M20 rather than instead of it, so there will be even worse congestion while lorries are sorted into who goes to Manston and who goes to J8 M20. The only places this can be done are as mentioned J5 and & J7 which will mean an even longer stretch of the M20 knackered.
The only good thing to come out of this is that the leader of Kent County Council is now pushing for more nationwide Lorry Parks to be built as holding areas - this is something we should all be aiming for since these would not just be mothballed for channel crossing problems but in use daily. As has been said this is a national problem and it is not just up to Kent to sort out the mess.
What should be happening is for the government to acquire ships to operate from Ramsgate to go anywhere but Calais, probably Ostend, Zebrugge or Boulogne. It is reported locally that Ramsgate could be loading ferries in 6 hours IF others got their fingers out.

Spot on and this applies to anywhere,
When any MP whines about truck parking it should be made clear "Have you got any in your constituency?
If not why not.
Gov policy is “That it is up to the private sector and local authorities to cater for need as they are best placed to know local need”
So tell the Nimby’s to do one and build it in your constituency not next door.
Interestingly one local council is complaining that they haven’t been given the chance to object to a new motorway service area by the M25 next to them That’s because that’s not how the planning system works duckheads
Altho it is not great it’s better than keeping the M20 closed, and may as well use manston for something they won’t turn it back into a airport, from delivering local (outside the fence) there is probably about 6 houses close enough to be affected the rest are tarts from minster worried about their house prices, they stopped the planes from night flights, they stopped houses being built instead, now they don’t want lorry’s parking there. The road’s were set up for manston to be expanded but again they put a stop to that.
It’s about time they sorted out a safe place for the drivers of stack to rest and use proper facilities hopeful’y they can get some Free basic hot food cooked for them there by trainee chef’s from the Army, Airforce, Navy,
After all they are only human and doing a job, and in return most of kent can run more fluidly.
Also back the Argument of Why buy a house NEXT to an airport if you don’t like noise?

Picture this scene… Must have been taken at 5am on a sunday morning in summer by the looks of it.
Now picture it again with artics as far as the eye can see on the hard shoulder on both sides of this bit of carriageway…
That’s now the midweek norm. All parked illegally, since parking overnight on the hard shoulder is no more legal on an A road than it is under the bridges on the M25…
