You either find somewhere with free wi fi or buy a mobile internet dongle. You can get some good deals for about £10.00 a month.

You ideally need a dongle, then you can connect anywhere, you can use wi-fi but only at MSAs etc and even then it is a right palaver.

had go with the dongle 3 was offering one for £15 a month with a notebook, dont know how much use u get with that as never had one

Don’t do nights out anymore, but sit around a lot and usually get online with my mobile phone, its just a PAYG with O2 but top up £10 a month get free texts and free internet.

Use Opera Mobile broswer, not 100% sure how it works, but think it compresses the pages on a server inbetween you and the internet, but even with normal phone connection can browse pages fast, its a good cheap option for me, since would be putting a £10 in the phone anyways.

You can connect anywhere you get a signal, not always a decent signal available.

Just get a pay as you talk dongle from one of the mobile companies, I have a vodafone one, had it over a year and still have about a tenner on it of the original money (£15) that came with it, and I use it most nights just for browsing if I cant get a decent vodafone signal then I connect through my mobile onto o2.

I connect my mobile to my laptop and it connects to the internet through that.

I’m on Orange.

But, if I can get wi-fi, I use that as it’s MUCH quicker.

if you can get a bt wifi signal and you are with bt then you can log on using bt fon.
Basicaly anyone with a bt homehub has a portion of their broadband set aside for other bt customers to log onto
unless you disable it in the router config page then it is on by default.
even at home i can pick up a signal from one of my neighbours on my mobile/i-pod etc you just scan for networks join the bt fon one and
log on using your normal username/password, there is a download limit but i cant remember it off hand.
According to BT its completely secure (mines is well and truely disabled) but most people dont even know its on.
not sure about out of town but you can always pick up a signal in built up areas and it saves a fortune on mobile data.

most dongles are pay and go too. however if you cant seem to get a good enough signal wrap the dongle in tinfoil that will normall boast the signal.

Never quite thought about the btfon. hmmm off to my hub page to disable .

What an excellent idea - wrap the antenna in something that’ll prevent the signal from getting through.

Now I’ll admit that I’m not the most technically logical person, but that red part seems to me to be err… mmm… strange.

Do you have any figures or other evidence (otherwise known as proof) to back-up your statement please?

I guess it is theoretically possible for the tinfoil to act as a larger antenna and be capacitively coupled to the existing antenna in side the dongle.

However it is as likely as a chocolate fireguard stopping the heat from a fire.

By the way I am radio amateur, so know a bit about it!

I know my mate has done this to his, (dunno how hes managed it tho) thought he wrapped it up in tinfoil.

However after researching some information you can use a metal sourcepan/Bowl.
And there is various How to guides in making your own Antenna Reception Booster

One website on where you can get this info and various other guides for things is
instructables.com/

Never really had to use mobile broadband so never had to get a decent connection. However like i say my mate did something like this with his, however he didnt make anything he just put it in tinfoil. So ive obviously not thought about it enough and posted it on the site while half asleep

However i think that the uk really needs to upgrade its internet service and wifi coverage.

After reading through the thread i have noticed that i may have annoyed a few people with my statement.

Sorry and please accept my appologies :frowning:. One of them blonde moments at 1.25AM

AV1D - no need to apologise, and I don’t think anyone is annoyed, merely amused/confused at the possibility of sophisticated microwave frequencies being assisted by any low tech help.

As I said, it could work, but very unlikely.

Hi AV1D,

No need to apologise mate, and you certainly haven’t annoyed me.
The most you did was to cause me to think, so that’s not so bad.

As I said in my earlier post, I’m not the most technically logical person around.

It’s just that what you wrote seemed to be a bit far-fetched to a non-teccy like me, so I asked for some proof rather than letting fly with something that might have made me look silly. :sunglasses:

For all I know, you might have been able to provide a really convincing answer.

It looks like Smart Mart knows his stuff though, and fair play to him for that.

If tin foil can block alien mind control rays I doubt it will improve the signal on your dongle

Excert from STAR TREK

Captain Kirk. “Scotty, we need to boost the tranmitter output to contact starfllet command”
Scotty, “aye captain, i could transfer power from the warp core defusers via the dilitium crystal matrix capacitors, and boost the signal via the transwarp transducer”
MR Spock “bugger that scotty, just wrap it in tin foil”
