That’s great thanks! I’m not associated with the industry but I’m guessing happy days those? On a side note what a fantastic building it is in ancoats (express) still looks the part today! Thanks harryvr6.

hi cockney pete do u remember haseldens they used to deliver to the express in shoe lane they used to run out of tooley st after the night men run all the loads up for the lads to shunt to and throw

Wasn’t there yard on the main road in Strood? Green and red ERF’s I recall, didn’t they merge/ takeover with Nuttall’s to make Hasleden-Nuttall. What about Drapers, I think they ran out of Thurrock, maroon and cream ERF’s and Iveco’s in the 80’s

Used to deliver reel’s to Convoys in Walkden Manchester when I was a on for Humber McVeigh’s…many moons ago!!

Take it easy,

David

Is Conoys still going at Walkden ? we also delivered paper there, I remember the toilet being right at the top of the yard where you could turn around, They used to deliver to News International , Knowseley ?. with there own motors , I also recall their depot at Thornliebank being very much the same design with railway lines still there but in use. Regards Larry.

Can anyone tell me if Convoys are still going, I heard that all the paper that used to come into the Greenland Wharf in Deptford is all at Tilbury now ?. I used to deliver to a drop at Watford Croxley Green area, & there was allways a Convoy motor there, Im talking earley 90s, & I quite often went to Deptford for my back load. Regards Larry.

Larry, Convoys moved from Deptford in the 90’s under huge pressure from the developers, there operations now run out of Chatham and Tilbury and Convoys are still a major player on the Thames. I remember trucks tipping at there sattelite wharf on Warspite road in Woolwich, watching there wagons heading down to the Blackwall tunnel, I used to see Leyland Buffalos and Volvo F7’s, all sorts of firms would backload out of the wharf, upto 300 a day. Peter

I wonder if they still use the UPVC Tents to store the paper, I was once told they didnt have to pay rates on these because the were not permenant, made sence to me , Regards Larry.

Sounds plasible Larry but I never saw tents at the wharf and with Murdoch’s money behind them I wouldn’t have thought they’d need to scrimp! Lol I’ve seen old pictures of Convoys and Purfleet Deep Wharf with reels stowed 30 feet high covered with just a tarp…

i used to backload out of convoys deptford, evelyn road or something. it did all move to tilbury in the end.

if you was there at the right time you used to be able to get nice thick cheese and toast for 50p and if you were overnighting there, drop trailer inside park the unit outside and go into the pub on the corner.

Hi, when my dad was working at the express newspaper in ancoats Manchester in the early eighties I. Sure suttons used to work there (erf’s with the union jack livery on the front/grille).

If I remember correctly you had to make a tight turn into into Luna St. off Gt. Ancoates St. to tip reels at the Express. Once in it wasn’t a bad tip but I think they started early and finished around lunch-time. This was back in the early 70s so probably things have changed now like every thing else. Cheers Haddy.
