Newbie Tipper Advise

S and J get down Oxfordshire aswell, loading out of Smiths quarries.

Best of luck with your job change. Just for the record, avoid going to the “pink” company for class 2 tramping.

Thanks everyone. I will keep you posted. Company is S & J Transport. An experienced crew.

Is that the S & J European as was that started out with VW vans with sleeper pods on top in the eighties.

Webb seem a decent bunch and don’t rush they load shredded rubber from our yard.
More and more London muck firms are buying sleepers what with tips been further away from London and muck tips been more strict on muck they let in.
A lot of brownfield sited now been devolved that were breakers yards etc are contaminated.
My mate was recently running muck from Deptford to Wolverhampton.

Don’t forget that author is inquiring about Class 2 tipper work… :stuck_out_tongue:

Unless its animal feed i didn’t think you even had C2 trampers in tippers.

Its everything other than animal feed.
My vehicle would be a scania G400.
Im keen to try. Ive done a lot. Sick of multi had class 2 over 10 years.

I would vote for - go for it and say there is 90% chance you might love it, but will hate small cab…

You are right about the cab. Especially as im 6’4.

The tip nearest to us is increasing it’s charges end of March. £100 to tip an 8w ffs. Increase of 10%, probably to pay for their rate cutting. :unamused:

How bad was it?

£100 quid? bargain!!
place I tip is £11 per ton,and that’s pretty cheap for us (although that’s utilities waste with broken tarmac etc) but its about 40 miles north of London, otherwise it a transfer station that charges £18 or more per ton :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:
I remember when it was £60 a load to tip(and you could tip anything!!) -and if we managed to secure a free tip somewhere we got £20 in cash- happy days lol,and they weren’t that long ago…

That explains why McDaids, Quattros, Simpsons etc all come out Oxford way with their inert then. That £100/load is for 6ws and 8ws. One of the reasons we axed our old 6w, bought the grab so I now shuttle the muck to the tips and collect stock. This is 70% of the 8ws work these days. We get more calls for the grab now even though we’ve only run it for about 2 weeks.

have you had the dubious honour of using the grab yet Nathan? bit different with six levers instead of two!!!

Job was not for me. I was surprised to find out the artic drivers are on the same rate as the 8 wheelers. Yet they do more work than the rigids.

No Andrew, only used the grab in the yard to put on 10t of type 1. Been busy on the 8 doing yard work (stock in and waste out). I don’t mind that, it means I’m getting more hours on the 360 than I ever did as a plant op. My boss said tonight that he wants me to switch to the grab soon, now he’s got used to it. I joked that he wants to swap because I have the easier days now.

So 5 days at £100 basic… You do a 15 and your basically on £6.66 (correct me if I’m wrong) can stick day rates right up your ■■■!!

It’s tipper work - you moron… they ain’t doing 15h… :stuck_out_tongue:
Max 13h, average 10h :stuck_out_tongue: or less :stuck_out_tongue:

Just to let you know i regularly max my hours all week in the summer, not so much in the winter, but there are plenty of tipper drivers that will be maxing their hours its not all building sites! Just to get my regular days work done i have to be in the que for the weighbridge at least an hour before the quarry opens
