Newbie thinking of LGV training and career change

Well I’m finally having my medical this week… waited the best part of a month for my GP surgery to get back to me and they still haven’t. I would have thought an NHS GP would jump at the chance to bring extra income into the surgery but apparently not.

So I decided to book a medical with a company online instead, not only is it £40 cheaper but they could offer a date almost immediately. Once that is all done and dusted and I have my provisional I will look for an assessment drive somewhere and suss out training companies a bit more.

The only thing that is putting me off at the moment is quite a few old time drivers on various forums really saying the job these days is bleep and wages low, agency work, blah blah. My long term goal would be to go self employed but I don’t know how realistic that is?

Can anyone recommend a highway code book so I can start brushing up?

Get an android app. I got LGV test (it’s the one advertising 42 hazard perception vids). I got a halfords one on cd rom but some speed limits were out of date.

Here is a free Hazard perception with 14 clips, also has theory tests

theory-test-online.co.uk/fre … t-demo.htm

When I done mine the provider book all from medical then providing the material to revise with etc then training & test

Not sure how easy it would to go self employed there are some out there but not sure how it would work as you may not have a regular income as there might be some quiet periods tbh self employed only get approx £1.00 more on agency might be a bit more if going to company direct

The wages aren’t great but does depend on where you live it can be anything form £7.50 ph some pay by the day anything form £70 per day

There are some better payed jobs about if you know where to look

The medical is a joke, 10 minutes in and out, definitely glad I went for the cheapest option. How is that supposed to screen out anyone unfit to drive? The doctor is basically reliant on honesty from the applicant anyway.

At least I can get my stuff off to the DVLA now.
