Hi there i’m a woman who drives a 7.5 ton horsebox for pleasure to move my gee gees about and to take then to shows.
I was reading this the other day dailypost.co.uk/news/north-w … -22821615/
and was horrified to think that a german driver was watching a film whilst driving but i have heard of an overseas driver cooking spagetti and eating it.
What concerns me is this piece '“From April, anyone with a TV screen on the dash will face an on-the-spot fine regardless if they are watching it or not.”
Question is does this include cctv as my lorry has one fitted to monitor the gee gees and also for reversing.
Now before today i have booked my lorry in for its test and spoken to a person in the testing centre, taken it to the test centre for it to fail on not having a marker light so many feet/ meters from the front of the lorry. Ok so its a law but how was i to know, is there somewhere i can find these things out or do it keep taking the lorry to the test centre only to fail on small things that i know nothing about.
Many thanks for putting up with silly girly questions i hope you can help me.

I would suggest the easiest way to make sure your truck is ready for test, is to have it inspected, pretest, by a reputable commercial garage, not necesarily, the main dealer, but I’m sure you will get plenty of recomendations of good ones on here, as commercial vehicle laws are constantly changeing, and a nightmare to keep up with.
I think, and I’m sure someone will be along very soon, to tell me if I’m right or wrong. That if you can view your monitor whilst driving, unless it’s a reversing camera, you will be breaking the law. If it is fixed, so only your passenger can see it, you should be ok.
This I must admit is only assumption.
I hope it helps
Tony

Are your ponies being used for competitions
If yes, then you will need to do the Driver CPC by Sept 2014
Again, if yes, you may be classed as 'driving for ‘Hire or reward’ if ponies are being used for competition purposes - I’m not the expert on this but there are EU tacho reg gurus on this site who are
ADD - ask and ye shall get a guru (see next post) - thanks MacDoog
Hi there. Im a VOSA TE and my Mum drives her horses around so I know a bit about both. The best advice I can give you is to phone your regional VOSA office and ask there. In regards to the CCTV…bit dodgy as I assume if you are the only one in the cab you must be looking at it occasionally to check on the nags…VOSA wouldnt look on that too kindly…ok of course if you have a passenger!!
In regards to hire and reward…Its not too complicated and VOSA would be more interested in the state of the horsebox rather than money changing hands. If you took a friends horse to the show and they paid you then that is hire and reward…taking a paid groom along…If you won some money at the show then that comes under hire and reward rules, and as such you would need an operators licence.
Welcome Driving Ponies to the madhouse. If you have your screen mounted behind your head to the left and use a rear view mirror to see the screen I can not see a problem. As for pre-MOT Plating, regular inspections will pick up any problems and this keeps running cost down.

the bit I’ve made bold is correct Rog
Don’t let Vosa or Rog tell you it’s hire and reward - if it’s your own ponies that you compete for fun then it’s PRIVATE USE
for the non horsey types - the only reward from showing/Competing horses is the fun you can have doing it
and if anyone asks tell them they’re your pets or else they’ll try getting you to come under WATO rules as well
heres a good tip for anyone moving horses privately, always carry the horses passport, even tho you dont need to by law if its your own horse, but if you had a breakdown or accident and need the horse transported by a hired transporter then by law he would need to have the horses passport,if you havent got it you could have a problem.

Doesnt matter whether they are yours or someone elses horses…if you get prize money then its technically for Hire and Reward…even if it was just a fiver on second place for in hand!!! Itd be a pretty desperate nick though!!!

it would be desperate sad no lifer who’s having a bad day to prosecute someone for winning a fiver
if it’s a business then yes the rules apply but if it someone’s hobby ffs apply some common sense and ignore it
I think the prize money issue as to hire and reward, was to target the pro and semi pro competitors who use the hgv type horseboxes ie scania, actros fms etc as" private use" and go home with a 10k pot,but unfortuantly the private individual falls into the same catergory if they win a couple of quid at the local show, using their trusty old 7.5tonner to get there.another law that dident give the littleman a thought.
ROG:
According to my source at VOSA, a ‘rosette’ counts as a ‘reward’
tell your source at vosa he/she’s a jobsworth and needs to get a life
They just quoted the LAW - they did not say that they would actually persue a prosecution for winning one - As another has posted, a law to stop Mr big has encompassed mr (or Mrs) small and COMMON SENSE is likely to prevail.
My only concern would be from an insurance company in the case of any claim - you know what these are like - they will find any way to get out of paying up
Thank you everyone for your interesting replies to this.
I shall make a few comments on this as i am not a complete girl
I have taken My WATO (welfare of animals in transit), i don’t need it as my animals are for pleasure and i don’t move anything for anyone else.If i did my insurance would need to be upgraded.
ROG[/Yes my ponies are used for competetion we go to county show competing in carriage driving The entry fees are usualy £20, the fuel is usualy £50 and the prize money If we are lucky enough to get any is as much as £30. Not a lot of profit in that. dbcooper All equine must be accoumpanied with their passport, no passport means a fine of £1,000. You are correct about the prize money issue. When the Wato came in the British Driving Society fought for the small induvidual not to be included in this legislation and won. So we don’t need a wato or cpc. As Denis f says its a fun day out and is classed as private. My local vosa lads like to see me each year as they take the mick and have a lot of banta with me. I still am none the wiser about the monitor in the cab but never mind i shall ask other Horsey folk what they know as most people will be taking their lorries for test round about now. Many thanks again everyone. Happy motoring and if you see a black and orange ford iveco with orange dragons on it give me a wave.I promoise to wave back. Oh Diesel Demon I am a rare female i have’nt seen any of the soaps for over 20 years they bore the socks off me.

If that really is the case it opens more than one can of worms.
Vintage tractors, stationary engines, etc.; many are currently taken to shows on the back of privately owned 7.5’s or even classic commercials. Farmers take livestock to shows in trailers which are big enough, combined with a big 4x4 pulling them, to creep into O-licence territory.
Taking it one step further, if I were to take my old pick-up to a show and in the very unlikely event that it won something, would that then be classed as “hire or reward” and invalidate my insurance? It is currently permitted to do shows of course but would I have to get the trophy or rosette posted to my house?
Agree with dbcooper, another classic case of “one size fits all” which hasn’t been thought out properly. The potential problem as I see it is not VOSA but likely the insurance companies who will ■■■■■■ at any straw in order to default on their obligations to their customers.
It depends upon where your cctv screen is mounted,if its on the dash top, obscuring the view ,it could fail.It needs to be mounted lower on the dash fascia, also it depends upon the mood your VOSA inspector is in!
