Evening all. The gaffer and I have managed to secure a nice little contract running a walking floor down to Spain every week for the next 3 years!
We have decided to get ourselves a new unit to do the run in and are budgeting for about £400 a week in lease payments (we don’t want the Agro of buying a second hand unit) so my question is what should we go for?? I recon a magnum but the boss wants a daf (it’s what he is used to) also can anyone tell me if it is ok to run a tri axel unit over in sunny Spain? (never seem to see a 6 axel set up over there for some reason)
There’s just no point in running a three-axle unit because the Maximum Gross Weight for an articulated lorry is 40 tonnes on five axles in both France and Spain, so all a third axle will do is add money to your running costs while taking a tonne off of your payload.
Thanks Harry, thought that was the case

There is much talk of France raising the gross limit to 45tonne on 6 axles, although not seen any mention of Spain coming into line yet.
Anybody ever been weighed in France or Spain
If its bulk work, probably a good chance in a walking floor I’d be tempted to see how much more they’d pay or a few extra tons, get myself a Stetson and some spurs and worry about VOSA and the 44t limit in the UK and run a 3x3 outfit

In the past 4 or 5 years. France have spent a lot of money on state of the art weigh stations, although I have never been weighed on one.
I’m living in the past Malc, France was never a problem if you had FF20 in your pocket
What about a DAF with the small middle wheels? Still 44 tonne and can get big tanks on for the spanish motion lotion
The small wheel midlift is popular on bulkwork. Or go for a tag axle and you can still have fair size tanks but the only thing is I don’t think every manufacturer offers it. Most I see are scania or Volvo

I’d stick with a 6 legger. I imagine it will be back on UK work soon enough
i think it’s a good idea to run a 6 legger in europe, no chance of being overweight on the drive axle.
DAF will stand the strain & be more comfortable to drive than the Mag. You can abuse a DAF & it will give no probs. Mags you gotta nurse, unless they changed 'em?

Yeah I do the odd stint in a new XF105, nice and quiet which is what I like, they seem to have sorted out the electrical problems on these now as well, economy seems okay too showing around the 10.5 - 10.8 mark when I drive it. Only thing I find is that the big cab seems to get cold very quick and the heater always has to be on to keep it warm - probably just me being an old ■■■■ though.

I’ve never ever ran overweight in Europe, I’ve never loaded 28t of tiles ever…
I was talking to an S&K Chap a few years back & He said The French where always weighing them I have been done in Hungary & Rumo but that was fairly common. Stick to the motorways & load Her up as newmercam says…

The Mag cab may be as big but its all plastic & rattles & if them batteries aren’t 100% that ■■■■■■■ won’t turn over in the mornings ,it needs the full 24 volts to fire up.
I think the DAF has climate control,so you set it & ferget it.

Yes it does have climate but it always seems to be working hard and blowing hard to keep the temp up - it’s the cold in me bones

You’d have to make a real effort to do that, you are allowed 13 tonnes on the drive axle in France.

I don’t care if you put 240V to the starter, you’ll never fire up a ■■■■■■■ in a Magnum
A Magnum with a ■■■■■■■ in, that must be a novelty to the Renault Dealer
Australian Magnum is based on the European tractor Renault Magnum chassis. Engine is ■■■■■■■ US-made (the European Renault Magnum is equipped with Mack engine) with power of 500-580 hp, transmission is Eaton, rear axles are Dana with an air suspension Hendrikson. Gross combination vehicle weight can reach 90 tons. The tractor is ideally suited to work with B-Double trailers.
just seeing if you are awake?
