I’ve used the search function to try and find advice for new trampers but it returned 17.5k results…
I start a job in a couple of weeks where I’ll be tramping Monday to Friday, no cab hopping.
After some advice for what to buy to make it more comfortable in the short time, and what to look at long term.
And any general tips for tramping would be great too.
Only passed class 2 Easter time and class 1 straight after so still new to trucking as a whole
Wash kit including baby wipes, decent bedding not a sleeping bag. Kettle and gas stove, decent data bundle, TV possibly a smart one (much better for the ■■■■ on a big screen [emoji849]) plenty of food.
Tbh mate it’s common sense, essentials and extras.
What do you pack when you go on holiday?
Take all that with you minus maybe the swimming shorts.
Then depending how self sufficient you want to be, some sort of cooking facility (or not) a kettle, buy a decent fridge if one aint fitted, and fill it up with what you like to eat and drink.
Avoid parking in lay bys and park somewhere where there are some facilities not including MSAs unless you’ve no probs with being ripped off for crap facilities.
A duvet, a pillow a bag with wash kit and a towel.
As I said…common sense.
Yes definitely avoid MSA’s if possible, plenty of decent places to park. I’m in Welshpool town centre car park at the moment which is free and quiet enough with all you need within a couple of minutes walk.
Make mental notes of potential hiding holes as you go along and note as potential parking places as you never know, they may be handy one day. I often look for places near facilities such as food pubs, shops etc.
In terms of what to take… food and drink obviously. I have a gas ring and kettle and take quick/easy meals ‘just in case’ I can’t get near somewhere to eat as I like to get out the cab for a bit.
Entertainment. Doesn’t have to be a massive data bundle as I download at home then watch during the week.
Seems a bit daunting at first, you’ll soon see what you need when youve done your first night out. Please don’t pass the numerous wagons parked up on busy lay-bys for their daily rest and think that is how I must do it, get yourself off the road on a quiet Ind. Estate near food , I aim for an Asda/Tesco/McDonald’s if poss so I can use their toilet and a bru in the morning. Google maps your friend or I like Hgvparking.com , stick in your postcode bit awkward on a small phone but it works well enough and has given me some excellent spots.
Ask your boss where he wants you to park. If he wants secure parking then thats where you’ll go, truck stops first then MSA’s. You may hate them but if they want you to park there there is normally a reason.
In terms of parking, they said that they’ll plan in stops for me at places they pay a membership or something for, I just have to call ahead to reserve a spot?
Any recommendations for a power inverter? Ideally needs to auto shut off so it doesn’t flatten the battery, will be for charging my laptop and maybe some other bits depending on what I get.
There is no membership for overnight parking , what they may be referring to is a SNAP account ,as a driver , you check in with your registration and that’s it , your firm has an account .
Your employer won’t help you with where to park up overnight , that is down to you and your working and driving hours available .
When your office workers have gone home , you will be still driving or working .If you ring for advice on where to park , nobody there.
Some SNAP parking locations require pre booking and will ask for your ETA and reserve a space .
Always keep topped up with gas canisters, otherwise you will get caught out like me just now in Scotch Corner layby when my cooker has died a death so it’s 4 weetabix for my tea tonight

Yep, I’ve had to resort to the ‘‘Dish of cornflakes and a can of John Smiths suppers’’ a couple of times in the past when something has not gone to plan.

Get a decent size one that will carry everything.
I have a 3000w one which carries my microwave and a household kettle, so now I don’t have to keep replacing those crappy 12v/24v ■■■■ kettles every few months.
Btw if you do, don’t plug it into your 24v plug ffs.
Get it wired to the battery or on an Anderson lead.

I e got same set up as Rob and my inverter has been in 3 turcks over 2 1/2 years as will be in a 4th by Christmas
Get the Russel hobs 1 ltr travel kettle
That’s a coincidence just like mine. (well similar anyway)
Only I’m a cheapeskate, mine was a quid (still boxed) at a car boot sale.
Makes up for the fortune I’ve spent on 24v kettles over the years.

Does the job though Rob [emoji6] no more trying to pull out hot plugs or just running out of gas as water comes to the boil

Wash the bloody things man!
Or better still get the wife to meet you in the car, and she’ll wash em and bring them back to you.
After all it IS women’s work …you’re welcome.
