New sign M5 south

Spotted a new information board just prior to Sedgemoor services this morning. It’s not operational yet but when it is it’ll be like the ones on the French peages that show the fuel price for the next three services.

Not a lot of use for lorry drivers as a rule, but can only be a good thing for the paying public and could well persuade the service areas to drop their fuel prices a bit. After all who is going to fuel up at the most expensive one when there are cheaper options on their route?

Read somewhere this week they’re trailing it on M5 but it didn’t say where

There are two, one north of Sedgemoor and one north of Taunton Deane.

Directed to the tourists heading to Cornwall/Devon.

Not a bad thing.

Yup, I posted originally while tipping at Willow Green, subsequently went to Gregory’s at Cullompton and spotted that one near Taunton Deane. Noticed on my way back that there aren’t any northbound.

Have you ever noticed that Cullompton Services is only signposted when travelling northbound? There is nary a mention of it on the southbound M5.

Funny you mention that 'cos as I was travelling south I noticed a sign saying services 20 miles (or a number near that anyway) which I assumed is for Exeter services and I thought it odd that the Cullompton services didn’t get a mention.

What gets me is , it’s a trial .

So they spend ■■? £ when they could use one of the Mobil units they drop on the police hump at a lot cheaper cost .
And it only tells you the price on the motorway ,
No wouldn’t it be good if they had to show local prices I’ve sainsburys 24/7 garage at Jon 25 and the garage over the road

It beats me why anyone buys fuel at MSA prices, most travellers will have passed at least half a dozen local filling stations selling fuel at £1 a litre before they get onto the motorway, they then stop an hour later to fill up at £1.25 a litre because the little yellow light has come on on the dashboard. I suppose a cynical person might say they are fair game to be ripped off.

As far as the southbound M5 goes, it doesn’t exist. It’s not mentioned on the advanced marker boards, there are no signs one mile, and then half a mile before the Cullompton exit, and there is no “services” sign at the exit. As an MSA it exists only when travelling northbound. I don’t know another MSA where this happens.

Told my kids fill up local when you leave then only use supermarkets etc , there’s always a supermarket somewhere and as they have smart phones it’s easy to google one

I’ve got a 175 mile drive in the car tomorrow so I filled up about an hour ago at the petrol station at the end of the road, if I had left it until I was on the motorway to fill up it would have cost about £15 more. To me, that is a hell of a lot of money to just throw away.

Its because of its size and holding capacity. If they had Southbounders going in too then it would be even more bedlam than it is with just a few Northbounders.

Causes some major problems for trucks as they allow everyone to park in the lorry park meaning lorries can’t get in, and if you’re already in there the car driving cockwombles will happily block you in. Twice I’ve had to go in to the building and request vehicles be moved, and have had to park in the caravan park (which most wobblebox pullers ignore) before now.

Yes, I am sure it would be bedlam, it is squashed between the motorway and the railway and it hasn’t really got any space to expand.

Just some pointless trivia, when you park in the lorry park at Cullompton, right behind you is where Cullompton station used to be.

Cullompton Services then and now…

The first image dates from the 70’s I would think, before the M5 existed. Just a remote spot in the Devon countryside.

Isn’t that the M5 on the right?

According to our portal, the prices are showing off network prices too, i.e. supermarket next to the motorway junction etc.

Anis is spot on, and concerns with junction capacity didn’t help, there were plans to build an MSA at Willand on J27 and sign it SB only that’s why Cullompton was signed NB only, the plan never materialised so there is just the MOTO facility there presently until they build the “waterpark” and associated stuff northdevonjournal.co.uk/Majo … story.html

Now Boss stop bulling them you’ll be getting them all excited
When the directive from No 10 was first mentioned in a meeting with the CEO’s of the MSA’s they just p!ssed themselves laughing at the stupidity of it

Look on the brightside loads more roadworks and closures at over 100 locations if it gets rolled out :grimacing: I suppose it saves doing it all on an app :grimacing:
