Well it seems the penny has finally dropped there’s going to be a big hole in the treasury’s budget pretty soon & they want to tax drivers via a Telematics scheme.
A yearly allowance of 3000 miles is good enough for me which means I’ll still pay nowt. fleetnews.co.uk/news/compan … es-say-mps

Wrong way round.
First 5k at 100% per mile, next 5k at 90%, next 10k at 80% ?
Occasional car users should pay more as they clearly don`t need a car as much as someone who does 50,000miles per annum.
(Devil`s Advocate. Strictly a point of view for argument and discussion, not necessarily my own.)

Clearly the people that came up with that figure have never tried to get a disabled person on a crowded bus in a wheelchair. Having parents in their 90’s with next to zero mobility means a never ending list of doctors, clinic & hospital appointments week in week out, I still split my use of public transport 60/40 for my particular needs so I should get an extra allowance.
And yes using car only when necessary would be discouraged if it gets cheaper later.

All moot when earnings aren’t sufficient to pay for this new utopian nightmare at any mileage.
So everyone minimises their tax exposure and the government cripples the whole automotive sector of the economy including the vehicle and fuel retail sub sectors.
So we can export more fossil fuel resources.
Thatll fix everything.
Until the official Government policy comes out I’ll reserve judgment but if an across the board pay per mile road pricing is introduced to replace VED I would be better off as I own several older vehicles which all have a higher rate VED, and 2 of them are ‘modern classic’ Mercedes Benz convertible’s which only get used sparingly mainly during the spring and summer.
Plus it will be satisfying to know the smug self righteous that can afford Tesla’s will also be paying to use the roads to!

There’s no way that the government will lose out on the deal.
The pay per mile charges will be extortionate. TV red

I doubt it will be to replace existing VED, which for top rate cars as you well know is increasing fast, almost certain to be an additional tax burden as will increasing rates of fossil fuel duty, those of us who fail to do as we’re told when we’re told must be punished.
It’s a good job I’m close to retirement then. I’ll get hammered as I do 15,000 miles a year to and from work, either that or I take a lower paid job closer to home and claim top up benefits.
Oh dear! They must be really skint! Just been reading about DVLA writing to owners of cars that have converted their ICE cars to electric over the last decade informing them that they’re reversing the fuel type from electric back to the original fuel type & asking them to pay back tax & licensing fees

Wot?! Is that from a legit site?
Sounds like it could be retrospective taxation?
Theyll be asking for duty on the fuel that wasn
t burnt next.

From what I can gather it’s a year specification thing, Cars Pre 2001 the VED rates were classed on engine size & if converted to electric the DVLA just needed the proof with receipts to change the fuel type but from 2001 to 2017 the VED rates were taxed on CO2 emissions for this class of vehicle this figure cannot be altered on the registration docs for the life of the car. Hence DVLA say even if a car is converted, they will not change the Taxation Class to electric and will continue to demand VED at the current rate for that emissions class - even though it now produces 0% CO2.
I wonder what will happen to classic cars that have £0 VED on them, Will that now change as one part of the new VED proposals was a mileage charge for all vehicles.

I do.
BossHogg:
I do.
cheers boss, you’ve just confirmed i AM a genius…
I wouldn’t go that far!

The point is they should have never recognised the original change to electric. So they should not be able to claim back taxes from you, now they have discovered their mistake.
It was from a site called diy/electric that converts/builds cars to electric, I got this info from there, One of these guys has been To-ing & Fro-ing with DVLA & came up against this brick wall in the comments. diyelectriccar.com/threads/ … la.202531/

I can see that the Gov are in a mess with newer cars being converted to electric, but not with older ones.
Can`t see where back tax is being sought though?
But I did get a bit distracted though… The BMW 2002 thread is brilliant.

I’d go further than that, the whole policy regarding electric vehicles is a complete mess. Very expensive to buy initially, range no where near what they are supposed to replace, charging infrastructure is crap especially if you don’t live in a house with a driveway for home charging, not enough energy for home heating let alone car charging, and a battery that will be shot after 10 years if your lucky.
