i wonder if thats the one i’ve seen going round the 25 with a tipper trailer then. 204k is gettin nicely run in.
If i had a choice i’d go for a really late 4series personally. They’ll have far fewer electrical issues than the ‘r’ series. And the beauty of the 4 series, IF anything goes wrong they’re so easy to put right. I used to drive a 54 plate, black topline 6*2 tag axle 164 580 with the classic spec ocassionally, gorgeous truck.
From a factual side of things since i’ve been doing this recovery lark (15 months) i’ve never recovered a v8. A fair number of 420’s and 470’s though in both 4 and r series guise. It’s the same 2 problems 90% of the time. A clutch or a turbo. Had a couple with sheared off fan drives and in the r series the gear linkage seems to be vulnerable to breaking.
Our little tally thing we keep going also shows that Scania is the manufacturer we recover least often. I think that says something.
As for the LEZ thing. I thought any truck could go in aslong as it passed an RPC test. Both our 1998 XF and FHs can go in.

Straight from the horses mouth (sorry Rusty, I’m not calling you a horse
) A very useful piece of info. As it happens i can add to this, when I was a genuine newmercman the dealership was opposite a Volvo dealer & they were always bringing Volvos in on the hook, I was quite surprised at the number, we didn’t get anywhere near as many at Mercs, although to be fair there are a lot more Volvos on the road.
What you need to do Rob is ■■■■ London off & buy that 143-500 that was in T&D a while back, that’d look real nice with a bit of chrome

I like my current motor a lot, in fact I would go as far to say it’s the perfect motor for the job, but I would love to take that Longline over to the USA & show them what a REAL lorry looks & sounds like
Buy it Rob & I’ll do a job swap with you for a week or two
