Armagedon:
Daftvader I would like you to report here on site after a day or two regarding the braking set up,your opinion,a buddy took one to France,a Giga and the braking setup was…questionable another opinion would be appreciated.
okay mate. Will do.Is you’re mate saying they not up to much then?.
Fallmonk:
Yes it is !
IF there is no high paying jobs ,
Then you have two options , no work claim brew and watch daytime tv !
OR , work for a lesser wage !
Not much of a choice
No, the third option is get off your arse and find something that pays a little better…there are decent paying jobs out there, not easy to find I grant you…but you have to look and not assume there aren’t any just 'cos you haven’t found one yet! It’s just that plenty of lads are easily seduced by a motor…generally at the expense of a decent wage.
The Merc is alright, but you can see from the number of oohs and aahs on this thread how easily a lot of drivers can be seduced by a lump of metal.
DV according to my mate the braking system left much to be desired coming down Mont Blanc seems and I only have secondary comment the vehicle is offered with 3 set ups,the stage 2 this Giga had was an engine brake the equivalent of the old exhaust brake system and at extra cost could have been offered with stage 3 a far superior engine braking system.I have not driven the rig myself and it could be the driver was not familiar with the Merc.Do remember the editor of Trucking International said the braking system was lacking feel while this lot would rather ■■■■■ their wrists than slag of Mercedes, advertising revenue.Your feed back would be valuable even I would concur MB couldn’t have been stupid enough to offer this rig with faults, but they are German and they did before.

Armeggaedon.Cheers for the heads up on that. Will let you know for sure what they are like. When i had look round it on thursday night i noticed it had a 3 stage pull to the lever. We will soon find out.Have not really been that impressed with any of the exhaust brakes on the mercs and this will be my 4th one.You would hope they would improve as the technology got better. But that is’nt always the case.
Truckulent:
If you worked in an office, would you get excited over a posh chair to sit in?! And a fancy printer and laptop??
Probably
Especially if the laptop was a macbook air or whatever that thin one was, and a free iphone, ipod and ipad to go with it, the complete apple family just to put a grin on the workers face
A nice comfy work chair would be nice too but some other sod in the office will soon have that away when the boss isn’t looking and stuff…
DV just told I’m off tomorrow so will be back next Sunday to read your opinion.Thought the cab was okay, well laid out and being a Giga you certainly felt high up and I own a Magnum but the real cracker was the driving seat, wouldn’t buy the Merc, too many bad memories but the drivers seat ace.
Mercs hate them!,still wake up in a cold sweat over the brakes on a 1926 unit over 30 years ago!(air/hydraulic on 32ton artic FFS!) a Mandator pulled better&stopped better!
It looks nice any chance of some pics of the inside
Years ago I was bored and read a mercedes manual on
the exhaust brake which said for optimal efficiency the
revs should be high and in a lower gear. Recently I was
at max weight loaded with cement coming down a 14%
hill trying to keep it at 40mph in a 60 plate merc axor
with auto box. I dropped 2 gears and the revs was in a
yellow/red area but not fully red and another exhaust brake
light came on and worked well holding me at 40mph. I was
a bit worried when it was approaching the red then all of a
sudden you could hear the exhaust brake come in which
started slowing me down and revs dropped a little in to yellow.
russell2587:
That looks the dogs dangleys. I asked my boss for one and he laughed, when I saw the new stralis I asked him for one of those, he said oh do you want me to cancel the new merc then and walked off, I’m 99% certain he was joking but the other 1% can’t stop hoping there’s one sat in the yard when I get back lol
It’s that 1% that will make me ask too Russ, especially as u had new one recently my chances must be atleast 2%. Lol. Rather the merc too
Fallmonk:
Congrats mate looks lovely , am still waiting on a decision if am getting a new one. Don’t listen to the doom and gloom merchants on here yes every one wants a wage slip with lots of zeros on it but that’s generally out our control.
So if your lucky enough to have a decent wage and a decent truck good on you, ESP if your doing a lot off overnights or just long day shifts every one wants a decent motor to drive about in .
Happy trucking
Thats me screwed then easy Job naf wages long Hours, Naff Truck.
Yes, I have started using the exhaust brake at those revs and initially was told off for trying to break the engine like that but then pointed out the bit in the manual about it, and the other guy shutup
It’s not like we’ve got any air-brakes we can deploy is it

Hi convoy.Yeah will get some interior shots of it.
daftvader:
Get the keys to this tomorrow. .Happy man.
You [zb]! I hate you! I actually hate you! I’m so jealous
No, I don’t get it.
If you worked in an office, would you get excited over a posh chair to sit in?! And a fancy printer and laptop??
It’s just a wagon. Quite a nice wagon I’m sure…but who cares??
Incidentally the last Merc I drove was a shed…mind you, it had big k’s on it and was a 59 plater…
Why do people like nice cars? Or fishing? Or football? It’s like a hobby and if your lucky you can make your hobby your job.
Hmm, it’s not the case though is it? It’s your job that is becoming your hobby in this instance. After all, you wouldn’t expect to be paid to go fishing or watch football. So would you be happy to go to work and polish your new truck for nothing as well?
Oh yes some sad folk would…
Why does it matter what way round it goes? if you enjoy your job that’s great! You work 80% of your life, you really should try and find a job that you enjoy.
If you live in your cab as well, it’s even more of a reason to get excited by a truck you want to drive, your going to be stuck in it for long enough!
I don’t really understand what you don’t get about someone loving the truck they drive? nor do I get why your on a truck forum where most people enjoy their job enough to spend some of their spare time talking about it, almost like a hobby…
