This is now on to 3 pages and nobody has agreed that maybe drivers are working to many hours. No wonder drivers get treated like they do when they cannot see how many hours workers in other jobs work, drivers come on here saying how long they are waiting at some rdc but all the staff there do 8 hours then go home, same with the office staff at the firms drivers work for 8 hours then home.
Drivers have got to stop thinking it’s right to be working all these hours.

Do they heck like.

How many 8hr jobs do you think there really are, and doing an 8hr job, what do you think you take home per week?

I’ve done a few driving jobs that are ‘8hr jobs’ (usually 9 because they dock 1hr dinner) and they pay [zb], but they are around, so if that’s what the driver wants, then go and get one, but if you get a job as a tramper, you’ve GOT TO expect to be either maxing out your hours, or near to it.

Don’t get me wrong, if I was a salaried tramper, I’d rather be parked up on 12hrs or so, but that’d be unlikely, and as an hourly paid tramper, I’d rather EARN some extra money than be parked up spending it.

So going back to the rdc how can the man unloading live on 8 hours per day when the man he’s unloading need to work 12 to 15

It’s not about being able to live, it’s a standard of living.

My p60 for last year was around 27,000, and night out money isn’t on that, and I only work 3/4 of a year because I’m a lazy moody bugger.

Ask a forky what his P60 was…

Now, I only live in a 2 up 2 down terraced house, I drive an old car and have 2 old motorbikes, my missus has a horse, we have a house in Bulgaria and a tourer caravan, we also go out for meals and have holidays and enjoy life.

I was working for Calor Gas a while back, that was basic hours and paid around the 18k mark…

See the difference?

You have to work the hours to get £27000 he works maybe half the hours for maybe half the pay but he’s home every night so has more life to enjoy unlike you, but he still has a house, car, phone so is it more how you manage you money against him. I work with a man who pays £62 a month for his phone I pay £15 but we both earn the same.

What sort of house does someone have on under 15k a year?

2 up 2 down same as the man on £27000

This industry will never change as long as we have this prehistoric approach to working hours, look at me I’ve got all these hours in…yeah worked double what normal people work for same money!!before the diesel tank polishers start saying ‘need to do em to make it pay’ get another job with a decent firm that doesn’t take the pis$.

Who, with the same level of intelligence and training and skills, gets the same money as we do for 1/2 the hours??

If you can be a doctor, MP, lawyer etc, go and do that, but for most HGV driving is either a choice or it’s what they can do

Lads are doing 70 hours a week for between 28-32 grand a year depending where u live in uk, I know loads of people who work in offices doing clerical work which is definitely unskilled earning similar money who are on a 37.5 to 40 hr a week contract . Loads of jobs which don’t need training are paying same as this industry for half the hours.

Give me 12hrs a day sat in a lorry seeing different parts of the country everyday over sat on a poxy forklift for riding round a warehouse anyday, lorry drivings not hard to be fair is it

you’re not gonna get 30k a year with no qualifications doing 40hrs in any kind of office job
tele-sales for skytv/phone companies etc is the only exception i can think of

Hi all
Why should we work all these hours?
I’m p…ed off myself Monday 12.5 tues 13.5 wed 13 thurs 13.15 Friday 12.30.
Weekend off expected to day same next week and work either sat or sun.
I’m working out my hours for last 26 weeks and telling them how many I’ve done over 48 and demanding time off with pay . If he don’t like it I’m off .

REALLY??

I bloody doubt it mate.

Maybe commission based sales or similar MAY get those sorts of figures if you do well, but you’d not get a wage paying that for unskilled clerical work, 18k ish maybe

I like the way that everyone is an expert in what clerical workers earn. Lol
I’m only telling you what people I know earn who have no skills or qualifications. I’m quite happy with my hours and wage, just don’t understand why lads work silly hours when you can get jobs that don’t expect you to work till your goosed.

what kind of clerical work are they doing to make that kind of money for those hours? are we talking London rates?

I have mates who earn that kind of money for those hours but they all have degrees

Out of the game for a while, but I’ve done clerical work and it paid nothing close to that.

Now, I know a friend who’s self employed / freelance who does ok at it, but he goes all over the country working, lots of commuting, it’s ok, he can claim the fuel back etc…

Im gonna say to the boss i can come at 5 am and finish 19.30 latest i want to come back home take normal shower eat something tasty watch my tv go sleep in my comfy bed etc, because i want to live normal life as well if not i see you later,i will never do any tramping [zb] that no offence to anyone

Please have a read about the auto censor in forum rule #3. dd.

Everything will be ok i hope office chaps won’t send me again with yesterday’s delivery and no booking reference that’s what cocked up everything plus traffic arround Tonbridge on friday pm

^This.

LGV Driving isn’t a skilled job guys, it’s just not. It holds a certain level of responsibility thats certainly worth more than paltry wages like £7ph & our drivers knowledge is valuable but we aren’t really any more ‘skilled’ than chaps operating heavy machinery in scrap yards etc. Not these days when most wagons come equipped with automatic gearboxes and we just sit & point it. Anybody with a car license can potentially train up and become a HGV driver in a week. Office workers earning £27K for 9-5 will have to really work their way up to that position, usually through proper qualifications and will no doubt have a lot more stress & pressure to contend with.

You’re complaining about the hours you’ve done but are going to say you’re prepared to do 14½ hour a day

Anyone who holds a HGV licence should have known before becoming a driver that some HGV jobs involve working long hours, that’s why I don’t get it when people complain about the hours drivers have to do.

And going home in between those 14 1/2 hrs, not doing that tramping ■■■■, leave that to the morons who actually want to get some sleep between 2 14 1/2 days :unamused:

I cant understand why drivers moan about the hours they have to work, why have they become lorry drivers   find another job and stop moaning :unamused:

Well mines a three bed semi in Newcastle, but then again I’ve only got 1 mortgage payment of £250 left.

How on earth is someone who is not a HGV driver, has no HGV license and no knowledge of the industry supposed to just automatically know that lorry driving in the main entails working massive hours? Are children taught it in school?

I read these threads, chuckle a bit and then quickly thank ■■■■ that I am well clear of the haulage industry (apart from posting on a lorry drivers’ forum before Contraflow is in). One lad moans about doing more hours than he wants and before you know it there’s a dozen others falling over themselves to trump him.

It’s as though bragging about working what in many other sectors would legitimately be considered enough hours for two blokes is some kind of truckers’ badge of honour. Remember all this the next time a ‘let’s all moan about wages’ thread comes around.
