New Greenwich tunnel

The contract for the new tunnel has been awarded to a Spanish company, Ferrovial, they beat another Spanish company (ACS) to the tender. They were the only two companies bidding…
It’s 1.1 billion contract … So much for Brexit.
Ferrovial also a part-owner of Heathrow…

Ha! My employer is owned by Ferrovial. It’ll be late, over budget and probably won’t meet in the middle.

Another £billion to be spent on the poor benighted South East of England, on top of the approx £40odd billion on Crossrail. Then there’s HS2 which will probably not get to Leeds in the foreseeable future, never mind the other 100 miles to Newcastle, and then on to Scotland. Here in the North East of allegedly the same country we still can’t get a dual carriageway on the A1 north of Morpeth to the border with Scotland. Is it any wonder were so bloody bitter about the situation? Regards Kev.

Well said man.

I reckon Maggie decided to let the place rot and no one seems too bothered since then in the city of government about rebalancing things a bit anytime soon.

And funniest part is the Tories we’re shocked by the Brexit vote outside of the South East and cannot understand the reason why :open_mouth:

Feel free to take it all.Including Northumbria’s and North Yorkshire’s fair share of the Country’s population levels on the basis of the same density that London and the ‘Home Counties’ has been lumbered with by the Northern Nimbies. On that note no surprise that Northern MP’s are all for yet more airport capacity being forced into the South East rather than extending Manchester,Glasgow,East Midlands and Birmingham.

Bizarre indeed.
The EU takes money from the UK as a whole. Obviously the richest areas contribute the most. The EU decides how to spend those funds. The EU gives deprived areas such as the North East money for regional development.
Effectively money is being transferred, by Brussels, from London to Newcastle…
The Tories were shocked? They cant understand it? They aint alone.

Self correction: it isnt merely bizarre how the North East voted, its
IN*******CREDIBLE !

Exactly the same in Wales. The valleys were devestated after the mines closed, and Wales has never been high on the list of priorities in Westminster. However, the place is full of signs everywhere, “build with…” “development financed by…” “infrastructure in conjunction with…”, the European Union having spend money on developing and improving Wales.

And how did they vote■■? They voted to get their country back. I kid you not.

Ive stopped trying to explain the irony of the situation to the Welsh.

You are absolutely correct again Franglais as usual. The irony of the result could be funny if it were not a bit tragic.

I now view the Brexit vote and result as an opportunity by the fed up people to oppose the government who has left them down without voting the opposition into power. A protest vote or a bloody nose for the government if you will.

Yes that’s an over simplification as there was a lot of influencers pulling the strings of the electorate

Same with the recent Brexit Party result, oppose the government without putting the opposition into power.

For far too many people the system is not working fairly at all and the well off become even richer and are allowed shove that fact in your face while the hard working majority are just getting by and told to get on with it or be fired.

Trump, Le Pen, Brexit are for me all an indication that something is wrong. Since there is no EU in America the common denominator seems to be this Neo-Liberalism that some
commentators were on about so eventually I had to look it up.

Well it happens to be the child of Thatcher and Reagan that continues to be nurtured by the government to this day.

And hey-ho how interesting it is. Yes the system is broken for the majority by this Neoliberal Economic model the UK and many other governments are now following. Funnily the EU were trying to temper its unfairness a bit by bringing in social legislation also, much to the anger of the UK government and rich UK business owners.

Well in the UK the chickens are beginning to come home to roost and we aint seen nothing yet I reckon.

Interesting article on Neoliberal Economics in Thursday’s Guardian.

Cue Carryfast …

Sorry should have included some of the basic info I found on Neoliberalism:

“KEY TAKEAWAYS

Neoliberalism supports fiscal austerity, deregulation, free trade, privatization, and greatly reduced government spending.

Most recently, neoliberalism has been famously—or perhaps infamously—associated with the economic policies of Margaret Thatcher in the United Kingdom and Ronald Reagan in the United States.

There are many criticisms of neoliberalism, including its potential to endanger democracy, workers’ rights, and sovereign nations’ right to self-determination.”
investopedia.com/terms/n/neoliberalism.asp

It also legislates to reduced the power of unions and organised labour to allow the market to dominate. (From somewhere else).

Time to wise up people I’d say.

There is more than a few books to be written about that, too. The ■■■■■■■■■■■ movie hasnt been mentioned here either has it?

And thanks for the link to the Stiglitz article. Following that up will take more than 5 minutes wont it?
S`pose I could instead click on links from the Daily Fail dash-cam page, to articles about singers wearing bikinis, that lead to articles about how honest Boris is…

EDIT to add:
On the “Any Answers” programme one contributor said-
“You ask your child what they would like as a birthday treat?
They reply “A trip to the beach on Saturday”. So you promise to take them.
Saturday arrives, and its raining. Kid says "Ive changed my mind, I dont want to go to the beach”.
But youve made that promise, so do you still take them? Do you do what they now dont want?"

Happy 3rd Birthday Brexit, June 23rd.

Only the most brainwashed Federalist could make the case that us giving more to the EU than we get back and massive job losses in the North having been given to the Germans and East Euros taking what we’ve go left is a good thing.

About as daft as Norvenors moaning about all the money being spent down here when it’s actually less on a per head of population basis. With the lose lose that the place gets covered in housing estates, motorways and airports as part of the deal.

On that note we’d happily swap them Norf Yorkshire for Norf Surrey if we could also swap the weather as part of the deal.
