Even a good day I don’t like the Friarton

It’s the Friarton bridge that scares me the most, I avoid it like the plague during high winds :open_mouth:

I drove over that on Monday with the winds we had then. All the muppet car drivers decided they wanted to go ovr it as slow as possible. [zb] that, get me off of it as quickly as possible ! On the way back there was about 6" of snow on it too. Couldn’t see [zb] :open_mouth:

Even the slightest of winds, I go through Perth… Last Friday morning, coming south from Aberdeen, I had a decker with only 31 empty cages on it. I was getting blown all over the place, coming up to the Friarton, there was about 3 maybe 4 artics behind me… they were all saying to themselves “If he has the balls to go over, I’ll go over!!!”… I was like “Sorry guys, No balls here!!!” as soon as my indicator went on, so did all of theirs lol :grimacing:

How about just putting sides on the bridges to deflect the wind ?

Then you’d have bridges being blown around so much they’d probably be closed more than they are now.

I don’t know. The old Severn crossing is closed to high-sided on a regular basis, the second Severn crossing is rarely closed. That said the span of the old bridge seems much longer than the mid span of the second.

It’s also to do with where it is. The old crossing is effectively in a valley which concentrates the effect of the wind.

I never liked Friarton bridge either there is something about its setting that seems to make you a bit wary. Eddie.

It’s cos the barriers seem to only be about 2ft high :exclamation: Im sure they are perfectly strong etc, but i sure as ■■■■ don’t wanna test them
And at night u can’t see the bottom, so it’s like driving over ‘the abyss’… you just KNOW it’s bloody high up !

I remember when that bridge opened quite a few hauliers said that they would not be using it.The barriers dont look very substatial to me.

The “new” seven bridge has never been shut because of high winds-it has a sort of fence its not rocket science.

Are you sure it’s never been shut

Was the new Severn Bridge not shut on Thurs? feel sure I heard it on the radio, but maybe I’m wrong.

Not being of an engineering bent can anyone tell me why the build them so high. It cannot be a surprise to anyone that it gets windy around queensferry, then they pick a spot for the bridge, then they seem to go out of their way to get as much height as possible on the bridge, surely knowing it would be closed to high siders before a spadeful of earth has been turned. Why not have a low one for a change? It may have been different in the days of high shipping volumes but I’ve not seen as much as a rowing boat on the forth let alone big ships.

Have you never seen the cruise ships? In fact have you ever been over the Forth?

Also a couple of aircraft carriers that need to squeeze under.

I don’t think the second Severn crossing has ever been closed due to high winds, which was stated above. It was closed a few years ago due to ice falling on vehicles though. I imagine in this day and age that there will be something technological put in place to prevent such closures on the Queensferry crossing - it looks similar to the aforementioned structure and is undoubtedly the most cost-effective solution.

Ho ho ho, currently doing it 10 times a week, they must wait until I’m finished. Do we even have any aircraft carriers anymore? Cruise ships! Down the Forth! That’s got to be a joke right?

Cruise ships will go anywhere there is deep water berthing would you have thought years ago that you would ever see a cruise ship in Invergordon now its a regular port of call for them. Billy how do you think Grangemouth docks get their ships and Rosyth which is a busy naval dock they all come up the Forth hence the height. Eddie.

About 5-6 years ago that massive floating city called the World was just the far side of the Forth rail bridge!

When the Forth rail bridge was being planned the Admiralty were kicking up a fuss about getting their ships into the harbours at Port Edgar and Rosyth. The Royal Navy was a major power back in the day. There were also commercial sailing ships at that time as well.

Well fancy that! The large cruise ship, according to its own blurb, was east of the bridge therefore not going under it. I was under the impression that the naval base has been submarines only for years. Why couldn’t they have a low bridge, like Kincardine, that raises in the middle, or swings open? Got to be cheaper.

Building a bridge was the cheapest option. Info here Forth Replacement Crossing | Transport Scotland

If I say A8000 does that send a shiver down anyones spine  just think only 7 year ago this was the primary route to the FRB! The queues where bleeding horrendous! I remember you used to be able to talk to other lorry drivers in the opposite lane cos you where stationary for so long

Come a long way in 7 year!
