We all know, and have seen, how many drivers on our roads seem to have no idea.
So what’s the answer?
We seem to be limited in what can be done about those already out there apart from using enforcement which, apart from speed cameras which do not catch general bad drivers, only speeders, is a little sparse on the ground, to say the least!!
Look’s like someone else has got their mitts on a copy of ‘mind driving’
Yeah i know…
Joking aside IMO you could teach them everything there is to know about road safety etc but they could still go out on the road and race about everywhere. You can teach them but end of the day’s it up to them if they want to use it
Nothing can be done to be honest, teach the young people what you want they will still show off to their mates and crash their car.
I would make the test super tough to pass, this will mean only the really, really, really good drivers pass. This would also help to reduce the amount of people driving on our roads as some drivers will probably never pass.
I also love the quote one in five of all rtas involves young new drivers and their passengers, that means four out of five dont involve them, if it was four out of five young new drivers/passengers, then it’d make people sit up and say yes something needs to be done, but for only 20/100 rtas to involve these folk, that isnt going to make people want change. And a bankable course for 14-16 yo kids, they’d be more interested in the fact the word sounds like imho, so thats a none starter.
One way forward is any guy/gal who has a baseball hat stuck fast to their heads at a ridiculous angle should by default fail the minute the examiner lays eyes on said headwear, that’d bring the number of accidents down dramatically

But then if they don’t pass they’ll probably just drive around with no licence/insurance

Well we need to invent a camera which detects a vehicle with no insurance and when it does it fires a rocket at the vehicle blowing it up
Everyone including myself is / was eager to get behind the wheel of a car when they were young, driving ourselves nuts knowing we had to be 17 yr old.
Solution?
When we were kids we were lucky to have an old council tip in the village where we lived, we would buy old bangers off the local scrap man for £20 and drive around the tip until the were totally knackered, then replace it with another banger getting something like a £10 part ex
The local village bobby got wise to us and was happy to leave us alone as long as we never ventured out of the tip, in fact the copper spent a lot of his time watching and giving advice.
I think it’s time the councils in conjunction with the police rolled out schemes across the country similar to the above, joy riders wouldn’t be bothered about nicking cars if there were places they could go legally. The experience gained would also be a benefit for road safety in the long run, throw in a couple of trainers for mechanical training and things can only be a plus.
Of course they could also introduce a law that any young driver between 17 - 20 caught endangering lives would be banned from driving regardless of their excuse if charged with dangerous or reckless driving.
ROG:
I would like to remind everyone that the CULLING of young drivers is ILLEGAL and not likely to be taken as an option…
Come on… you lot must have some concrete ideas - and I don’t mean by burying young driver in it either…
Make them drive pink robin reliants. They probably don’t go past 50mph and have a 0-50 of an hour or so. I don’t think they would like to show off in them

Something along the lines of this…
They can learn safe driving and how to repair a car

As a result of doing the above, were the usual young driver urges of recklessness got out of the way before venturing out onto the highways
I think that all drivers that pass there test should by law have to display a sign on there car to say there have passed, i know the is a voluntary one at the moment, but If it was compulsory it mite slow them down or change there attitude. to how there drive.
Also i would make it law that a new driver under 21 years old gets is own insurance and be limited to 1 litre car for the first year, and put it on there licence to that affect.
IE B licence with restriction code on it
I know it mite not help but it mite save one life and that all that counts.

I suppose in a way they were Rog, because I could finally go on a main road @ 17 yrs old it made me want to keep what I’d got as it was better than dodging craters and long grass Lol
i don’t think they need to change anything regarding the drivers. some young drivers are ok, it’s the bad instructors that don’t make them aware of their surroundings.

I think I’ll let an ADI who teaches B learners answer that
