Seriously everyone thinks they can drive like Schumacher till they hit a tree and prove they can’t.
With a Playstation, they just click on new game. it aint that simple with a splintered fence post up your nostril

I was approaching a roundabout in stalybridge. the nearside lane was left turn only, so i was in the second lane but covering lane one like you need to sometimes. this to most people is a clear indication that you are going straight on but need both lanes.
It wasn’t quite so clear to the nearly dead bird in the red mini, who just had to squeeze through. she must have done it just as i was about to set off as one minute it’s clear and the next there’s a mini about to be mounted by my trailer.
what do driving instuctors teach these kids nowadays. if i hadn’t had that last check of the mirror, she could be dead now. and to make matters worse, she could have made me late.
brados:
Its the same old isn’t it? Why on earth they don’t teach truck awareness on the driving test is beyond me, maybe it is because it is only common sense not to drive up the inside of a truck - just answered my own question there.
I must agree here - it’s about time that they taught first time car & bike learners EXACTLY what ALL other types of road users are likely to do in certain situations and the problems that each of them face.
Understanding ‘where others are coming from’ has got to be one of the biggest things lacking in the current training & test.
theres alot that should be changed,
limit the engine size for 2 years 1litre max
no passengers in you car for the first year after 10pm
make them have a minimum of one years training before they can sit there test if under 19
no engine or body mods allowed, stereo is fine
also on there should be 2 tests, first test should be longer and they should be handed a map and told to get the car to 5 places within the test without help from the examiner and if they cant get themselves to any of the destinations they fail automatically. i know folk who rely on sat nav and dont know how to read a map. whereas im lost without a map and dont trust sat nav.
2nd test should be taken after the first test and it should be a test on the motorway
i know these seem harsh but it should be done, too many {zb} driving on the roads these days that are younger than me, always racing each other etc. i have been driving since the age of 12 (private land etc) by 13 i had mastered how to change gears and reverse etc, i had ten driving lessons before i went in for my test - failed first time on something that could be argued. never stopped at a stop sign long enough, i had come to a complete stop and i saw that nothing was coming either way so i moved off otherwise it was a flawless drive - 2 minors passed 2nd time with 1 minor.
also since learning to drive trucks ive actually slowed down when driving, that is until some lil chav is right up my arse in his 1.1 nova, he isnt gonna stay with me in a 2.0 turbo saab 900 lol.cant wait to get my dads 9-5 griffin lol. and before you say anything no i dont race people.
No matter how many tests people do, or how long they are, etc.
A knob is a knob. just like that [zb] nephew of mine. driving us mad, is all he’s fit for.
The answer is more police to catch the bad driving. When did you last see a traffic car on the motorway that wasn’t dealing with an incident. They’re never there to catch the bad guys. CCTV isn’t the answer either. One of my mates got cut up on the north circ which left his trailer in a hatched box by 4 feet. He was on camera leaving a safe gap and on course to clear the junction, but they didn’t want to know. Almost a days wages lost because an idiot car driver wanted to get one car length further down the road
This begs the question - do these bad drivers actually KNOW how to drive well

I think most of them do. OK, maybe not ‘well’ by Roadcraft standards, but far better than they actually do.
Training on how larger vehicles use the road might be beneficial. Personally I think it’s common sense, but that seems to be increasingly less common! The real problem, though, is attitude. For example, I know a young (22yo) car driver, who has been driving since he was 17, and drives like a complete idiot - high speed, braking as late as possible, cutting in front of people, etc. He knows this, and fully accepts it, but doesn’t intend to change - apparently because he hasn’t had a serious crash (yet). Another driver I know of a similar age had had 3 crashes (can’t remember how many of those were write-offs), yet still continues to drive like a [zb]; presumably because he’s still alive, and thus invulnerable.
On the other hand, I know a 21-year-old who’s been driving probably less than a year, but is a courteous and considerate driver. He may still have a lot to learn, but I have no doubt that he will learn, because he intends to develop his skills. He works for me on occasion in a non-driving capacity, often spending the day in the co-pilots seat, and whilst he has no intentions of becoming a truck driver, he’s always asking questions, and intends to take his cat.C ‘for experience.’
It’s all in the attitude, and I really can’t see any way to force people to change. Having real police, who use their brains, and imposing very harsh penalties on those who drive dangerously - and that is not the same as merely breaking the rules - is the only way to improve road safety.
Davey Driver:
Of course they could also introduce a law that any young driver between 17 - 20 caught endangering lives would be banned from driving regardless of their excuse if charged with dangerous or reckless driving.
Up to this point I pretty much agreed with you but I’d still wait for a conviction before the ban.
My 2 children are both drivers and while they didn’t go out of their way to have a scrape they both had nearside bumps early on. My own view was that this was simply that they hadn’t yet mastered the judgement and effective use of mirrors. In all the cases they only bent metal and their own cars were the ones most damaged, come to think of it 3 of the 4 were static/immovable objects, and that was a bigger incentive to improve as they had to drive around with the battle scars visable.

Did you apply the handbrake? That was the advice that I was given. By applying the handbrake you demonstrate that you know you had to stop and took the appropriate actions to do so. I know that once you pass it might not be done every time and maybe this is a positive example of how people are trained to pass a test rather than given the elementary tools for a driving skill that requires lifelong learning.

On the advanced test, if the handbrake is applied unnecessarily at a stop sign, then that is marked down.
I can see why they want car learners to do it though, as it becomes a set routine for every stop sign which saves then from having to think about options as well as do everything else.
This is a good example of why there should be 2 driving tests and highlights just one of the differences.

nope and thats why i failed, but i could clearly see nothing was coming either way, id been around that part of the road in my lessons and never got told once to put my handbrake on. i drove better in my first test than my 2nd test, i had to stop halfway through it because my leg took a spazzy attack lol
