New driver and anxious

seand90:
update on my job i was starting! dissapointed to say the least the agency messed things up and sent 2 drivers for 1 class 2 role!

and guess who the client sends home me!!

arrived at site 5.45am to meet the client chris at 6am ,met chris and another bloke who works alongside chris desk after turning up and meeting they shortly realised very fast that hang on theirs 2 class 2 drivers here for 1 position, shortly after the other new class 2 driver turned up! we are both sitting down listening to the client chris and his friend speak about its a role for 1 person why have the agency sent out 2 drivers, anyhow became very clear the client wanted 1 driver and 1 of us was going to get the chop after 10-20mins which felt like a whole day with the client trying to get hold of the agency so they could give one of us the chop they got through in the end to the agency but not the driving dep they needed to speak to brandon who dealt with the drivers side of agency.

the client said to the other chap(class 2) that it was him that apparently the agency sent a cancellation email out for the role and that it was him that would have to go, but i learned quite fast that chris favourtised the other bloke more than me even though apparently he had been sent the email! , the other class 2 driver had no clue of this apparently?! they said to me i could make a cup of tea so i went canteen come back 5 mins later and stil no news and then all of sudden they they claim its me who wasn’t supposed to be there!, the goal posts definately moved and i felt it in the air dissapointed to say the least shook there hand and left the site

cant believe the agency has messed me about!!

Translates as it really is a distance bulk drop job and the other driver has done it before but has been given the usual local multi drop/building deliveries yard labourer/shop deliveries/etc etc dross and decided he ain’t going to do it.Argument between him and agency ensued and the rest is history. But of course they won’t tell you that. Now awaits you telling us the next episode in which you’ll suddenly be offered the crap work that he’s refused and because you’re probably newer they’ll expect you to naively accept it.

robroy:
You’re probably correct technically, but surely the agency needs to take responsibility for it do you not think?
It certainly aint the o/p’s fault whatever the circumstances, so imo they should pay the lad 8 hours min, stuff the ‘‘We can’t promise’’ ■■■■■■■■ they fed him. :imp:

Yes, it’s between the agency and the client (and possibly the other driver, too…)
Technically the agency should negotiate for the client to pay them for OP’s wasted time since it was the client who decided to pick another driver on their own (albeit from the same agency). In practice though I wouldn’t hold my breath because the client will most likely refuse to pay as they don’t care if they “lose” the agency (there are dozens out there) and the agency in turn doesn’t care if they lose OP as a driver as 1) he’s new and 2) there are hundreds of other drivers out there so life goes on…

Yep, one of the (many) reasons I hate ■■■■ agencies, no scruples or sense of common decency, and totally disrespectful towards their drivers… :imp:

Come to think of it, that just sounds like the crew I work for in fact.

Otherwise I would maybe just write something on the back of a printout, I’m sure that would suffice with the powers that be would it not?

That’ll do for me.Now where do we get the paper for the print out.Where/how do we put it in the tacho when we’ve got it.How do we tell the tacho to print and how do we tell it to stop.

You get it from the office, or buy it if on the road, it goes into a holder in head. You scroll through menu until you see ‘driver printout’, press ok and it will print you that days activities from midnight to the current time. This is what you write on the back of if you have any infringements. I personally do two printouts and write on both, keeping one and handing the other into the office as soon as practical to explain infringements to their analysis people.

Yep, one of the (many) reasons I hate [zb] agencies, no scruples or sense of common decency, and totally disrespectful towards their drivers.

With recent experience I’ve softened my attitude to agencies a bit in that there is too much crap work on offer and too many drivers looking for what little decent work there is.The agencies just happen to be caught in the middle of the resulting standoff between the two opposing sides and interests and obviously have to do whatever it takes to stay in business themselves.Expect to see things get much worse as road transport gets pushed more and more towards being a local delivery service and in which larger vehicles are just seen as a way to get more or heavier local drops done in a day.

In this case it was a fair bet that it was just all too good to be true, one way or another, when the job said 5 drops nationwide. In the form of either predictably turning into more like 25 local drops on arrival,or suddenly being told it’s all off if not.In this case there’s obviously no doubt about it being a case of the latter and why. :bulb:

Blimey Harry I used to write a manual entry on my tacho charts covering all the time they were out of the truck showing a continuous 24 hour record.

Seen by many as good practice but never was legally required and certainly isn’t now. Not sure why Harry is so adverse to manual entries, they are so simple to do its easier to just do them to keep everyone happy in my opinion

Better to spend a couple of minutes doing an entry than let them have a couple of hundred quid out of my wallet.

Just ask them to pay for your wasted travel costs and time.Forget about the 5-6 hours as a gesture of goodwill, then see what happens. It might turn out to be a nice easy at least month’s worth of work and you’ve lost nothing.

I dunno. Somehow I think this thread has been posted before - different name, different scenario but the broad outline - newby, no experience, shafted by agency on first day, should I, shouldn’t I? Very reminiscent or is it just me? Not saying we’re been trolled again but…lol, lol, lol, bring back any memories?

This is a better plot than Game of Thrones Season 8.

If I was you I’d just walk away from all these nutbags, lol. Understandably you seem eager to stick around since this is your first “chance to break into the industry”, but I’d look for a better chance. Still, having your first ever shift on an agency job is like…losing your virginity to a ■■■■■■ - so just get it over with? :unamused: I don’t know

I think that it sounds familiar because it happens so often. There are more “drivers” than there are wheels for them to attend too. The agencies don’t really give a flying zb because there will be another driver along soon.

While there are pages and pages of job ‘opportunities’ for drivers mostly offering local multi drop/building trade deliveries/retail distribution etc which obviously no one really wants. In addition to often wanting silly hours when as we know it costs them no more to employ more drivers working less days like 4 on 4 off,or 3 on 4 off and 2 on 5 off working weeks for example.

:open_mouth: Are you serious?
He turned up for a job (that THEY arranged) in good faith, so technically in their time in their employment.
The fact it went ■■■■ up aint of his doing.
They should pay him…end of.
‘‘Gesture of goodwill’’ my arse, it’s an agency ffs. :unamused:

Great. But it’s not as though he’s turned up for a class 1 trunk run that suddenly turned into 7.5 t London multi drop C and D work on arrival.( Which incidentally I stupidly actually tried to do what I could to get them out of the zb and got moaned at for the privilege. Before the resulting row which ended up with the guvnor apologising to me ).

Nor the situation of being taken off a similar decent distance bulk job and put back on the zb like scaffolding and local Hiab and more local multi drop, when the client said they wanted me kept on it.It was at that point when I gave up on the place.

Compare that to just a wasted commute in this case. But with the pay back that it also probably resulted in a decent month’s work in the end.IE maybe comes under the heading of pick your fights wisely and don’t burn bridges and possibly more to gain than to lose ?.

Sorry to hear about this outcome, though it is not remotely surprising.

In an industry that claims to be desperate for new blood, it is some achievement to manage to turn hopeful new drivers into disgruntled radicals, having to confront bosses and slam their hands on the table to get their pay, before they have even completed a single leg of a journey behind the wheel.

To be fair it might have had more to do with two drivers wanting to do one reasonably attractive job.Than the ‘boss’ ( client ) calling for two drivers to turn up for work when he knows that he only needs one to do the job.
