5 drops so lets say around 60-80 miles between each drop.

5 drops, 60 - 80 miles apart? In a 10 hour shift?
Whats he in, a [zb] helicopter?

Yes sorry I was still in trunking/less bulk drops/pre loaded wagon mode.

Anyway it’s obvious that I’m thinking along the lines of a 350 ish mile between leaving and getting back to the yard shift and around 5 drops done within that.

Still not a bad job in that case and still maybe possible to finish closer to 10 hours than 12 depending on route, traffic and time spent loading/tipping and on break.

Feel free to prefer the 25 drop 12 hour shift to be done in 10.Which knowing agencies is a good bet this job might just turn into when the OP collects the keys and notes.

ā€˜Still not a bad job’…I love how you are judging an entirely fictional job you’ve completely made up

Wait until you’ve done a few days at the firm and feel as though you know what you’re doing in a morning, then sit down and figure out manual entries.

Couldn’t someone explain how it’s done on here.So old school tacho just turn the paper chart over and write the manual entry on the graph conveniently provided remembering to use a felt tip pen.

Whereas with a digi tacho it’s just a piece of plastic like a credit card that goes in a card reader unit slot ?.Now what are we supposed to do to write a manual entry bearing in mind that just writing it in a diary probably ain’t going to cut it.Also what’s all this bollox about ā€˜print outs’ and which button do you press to get one and where is the paper for it put and who do you have to ask in the office to get it.Bearing in mind that blank tacho charts were issued by the box load numbers recorded and signed for and kept in the truck. The OP will obviously hit the ground running if he knows all this stuff before taking out the truck.

But there are so many permutations of the process (according to different brands and firmware versions of the tacho) and symbols involved, he’s realistically going to need to read a manual or a cheat sheet for his specific tacho (and he won’t know which until he gets there).

Some older tachos (more likely to be encountered on a rigid) used to require times to be entered UTC, and had other quirks the details of which I forget. It used to be so difficult that you had to sit down and plan the entries on paper before you actually made them, like the bloody German Enigma machine.

It’s a matter of opinion but I’d just say forget about it until he feels like he’s in the swing of things in the morning.

If you get straight in the wagon in the morning and aren’t using the missing time to conceal anything, I’ve never heard of anyone getting in lumber for failing to make manual entries, and in such cases it’s simply a matter of best practice or perfectionism.

It’s different of course in firms where you’re sometimes sat on the bench for an hour before you’re given a wagon, or there’s other faffing around before you get the keys. In those cases it’s imperative to make manual entries as a normal practice.

But in the first days when the mental workload is high, and without a driver trainer available, I’d be inclined to concentrate on getting the more essential things right first.

Never done one, probably never will.

Only time I could forsee where I could actually be arsed to do so, would be if it meant me losing any pay.
Otherwise I would maybe just write something on the back of a printout, I’m sure that would suffice with the powers that be would it not?

Agreed. Why would anyone need to do a manual entry? Tachograph time starts when you get into the truck.

I did work at one place last year which threatened to withhold wages if I didn’t do manual entries covering every single minute from the moment I walked in through the gate to the moment I walked out through it, I simply refused to work for them again.

I was actually going by the OP description ā€˜nationwide’ 5 or 6 drops. What have I missed or made up.

The fact that might be very likely to turn out to be 25 or 26 local drops when he gets the keys and the notes is another matter. :smiling_imp:

:open_mouth:

That would have been like me saying I think I’ll just leave it and not bother when I had to use a tacho for the first time after leaving the council.Including having to sort out setting the clock on a Veeder Root v Keinzle and the different charts required for both and some trucks having auto tachos and some not.

Anyway thanks for confirming the OP’s ( and my ) worst fears about digi tachos. :smiling_imp:

That’ll do for me.Now where do we get the paper for the print out.Where/how do we put it in the tacho when we’ve got it.How do we tell the tacho to print and how do we tell it to stop.

Blimey Harry I used to write a manual entry on my tacho charts covering all the time they were out of the truck showing a continuous 24 hour record.

Just go and do the job, it’s all good asking people stuff but when it comes to your working time and driving regs, you need to keep yourself right. You will pick it up, manual entries are easy unless you rush it lol look on YouTube there’s some good videos on how to use tacho units. Go and give it a go if you mess it up it’s all experience, just take your time. Make sure you do your vehicle checks and don’t let them force you to run bent. I walked out of my first 2 agency jobs because of company’s telling me to take out a dodgy vehicle and the other telling people to put there 45 min on so I could run around their warehouse picking.

Good luck

update on my job i was starting! dissapointed to say the least the agency messed things up and sent 2 drivers for 1 class 2 role!

and guess who the client sends home me!!

arrived at site 5.45am to meet the client chris at 6am ,met chris and another bloke who works alongside chris desk after turning up and meeting they shortly realised very fast that hang on theirs 2 class 2 drivers here for 1 position, shortly after the other new class 2 driver turned up! we are both sitting down listening to the client chris and his friend speak about its a role for 1 person why have the agency sent out 2 drivers, anyhow became very clear the client wanted 1 driver and 1 of us was going to get the chop after 10-20mins which felt like a whole day with the client trying to get hold of the agency so they could give one of us the chop they got through in the end to the agency but not the driving dep they needed to speak to brandon who dealt with the drivers side of agency.

the client said to the other chap(class 2) that it was him that apparently the agency sent a cancellation email out for the role and that it was him that would have to go, but i learned quite fast that chris favourtised the other bloke more than me even though apparently he had been sent the email! , the other class 2 driver had no clue of this apparently?! they said to me i could make a cup of tea so i went canteen come back 5 mins later and stil no news and then all of sudden they they claim its me who wasn’t supposed to be there!, the goal posts definately moved and i felt it in the air dissapointed to say the least shook there hand and left the site

cant believe the agency has messed me about!!

Dam, that’s a crap thing to happen on your first day. It sounds to me like the agency didn’t mess you about, it was the other driver (who may or may not have pretended he didn’t get the cancellation email :astonished: ) so he too could get paid full shift if he were the one to be sent home and the client who may or may not have had this other driver do work for them before…it’s a tough gig with most agencies out there. Keep trying, sign up with more (all) agencies in your area, something will come along.

Welcome, you are now a fully indoctrinated agency driver. This sort of thing happens too often. Their mistake they pay for it . Get registered with all of them, remember there is no loyalty in this game, dog eats dog.

yep i dont think it was the agency as they told me when i went to their office that they txt the other bloke nathan on friday to not show up and he text back and confirmed and he still took it upon himself to turn up and try his luck

the client i was meeting chris and jonathon had a email from agency confirming nathan had been cancelled and at first in the office jonathan told nathan apparently its you thats got to go he shrugged his shoulders said nothing…i felt bad for him .chris and jonathon said i could go make a tea i felt bad went to the canteen come back and the clients still hadnt spoke to agency and they was unsure then all of a sudden they said its me thats got to go i didnt argue i shook their hands with respect and left. all this whilst the other bloke nathan knew it was him really and he shouldnt of went…either way client chose him over me even though agency instructed the other fella not to go

f***kin annoying agency said there going to talk to the client and promised me i would be in tomorrow, they said that the client would have to pay me i said to the agency you will have to pay me the days wage im embarrased they said they cant promise and they would talk to client and get back to me…

Don’t start…

Feeling anxious and like you let people down. You didn’t.

You showed up and therefore you get paid 8 hours. Don’t get fobbed off with 4 hours or such like.

You can tell when an agency is lying because you can see their lips move.

Download an app called ACR in playstore. It’s free and records all your calls.

I never thought I would say this on here :open_mouth: …, but that is how a dcpc course helps.
If you’ve been out of the game for a bit, I’m sure you will know that you will need one.

You’re probably correct technically, but surely the agency needs to take responsibility for it do you not think?
It certainly aint the o/p’s fault whatever the circumstances, so imo they should pay the lad 8 hours min, stuff the ā€˜ā€˜We can’t promise’’ ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  they fed him. :imp:

It’s natural to feel a bit anxious and awkward, likewise it easy for me to say don’t…

As has been said sign up with more agencies and look after YOURSELF in this game. Does Nathan feel bad that he may result in you losing a days wage? Does he ■■■■…

On that subject it’s not important who pays - agency or client - what is important is that you get your eight hours because you’ve held up your part of the bargain. Don’t let it drop and become a doormat because it will happen again and it will be you who gets sent home because they know they can get away with it.

This is the agency’s fault they owe you 8 hours pay, persue it no 1/2 measures like a ā€˜promised’ good job coming up - that’ll be a load of ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– . There are plenty of agencies around all wanting to cut each other’s throat so I wouldn’t worry about being blacklisted. Start off the way you mean to go on, it’s best to understand one another from the word go. No ā€˜oh we can’t get it back off the client’ tough, they are in business things go wrong and cost you.
