Today I stopped for a snack at a mates butty van and spoke to a Tesco driver with a sleeper cab New Merc thing.
He is near retired and has driven for 39 years , at Express milk for 13 years , then Tesco for the last 26.
Once in his whole driving career he has been to Liverpool from West London and apart from that never further than about 90/100 miles.
He has NEVER done a night out . Amazed ! Are there any more like him ?

Probably quite a few we have blokes at our place been delivering bread for 40 odd years and never had a night out.
You’ll find a fair few milk tanker drivers will be the same as will the old petrol tanker boys
I’ve done over 10 years and can count the nights out on one hand, possibly both. And without the slightest whiff of sarcasm, half of those really were unplanned (breakdowns).
I was on milk tankers for 12 years, home every night…unless when i was on night shift, i was home every morning.
I’ve been with DHL for 18 years and had one night out because of a breakdown in all that time.
previous job, was home every night unless covering for the other bloke, done it about 5 times in 2 years
i’ve done 4 nights out in 35 years…1 unplanned

39 years carrying night out gear he’s never needed
I hope you lot are ready for the onslaught of ridicule that is about to come down on you from the “real men” and the “proper drivers” on here.
I’ve never done a night out either
I think I am the only driver at our place who has ever done a night out - and I’ve only done two of them in 10 years! (both of them before I started on this job - six years or so ago). Both of mine resulted from severe weather with associated major road closures, delays etc.
Dodgy/dodgy.home and night out money in pocket that was the way I liked it …
Only a real proper driver would sleep in his Boxers on top of his trailer all year round.
Never had a night out in 6 years driving and 2 jobs.
Had years of it, and would recommend it nobody. Home every night now, unless I get stuck out due to circumstances beyond my control. When I think of the time I wasted tramping it makes me want to weep! The ‘real’ truckers are welcome to my spot in the layby and can fill their boots with as much ■■■■■ food as they like. I will probably will be having a swim or a sauna or just enjoying some decent company, instead of talking rubbish to somebody who has no interests apart from a truck and what they read in the Daily Star.
I went from 32 years of not being at home, to being home every night for the last 8 years…although I do have the odd urge to tramp once again. That is usually squashed by the tales I read on here of break ins and thefts, horrendous parking charges and ‘johnny foreigner’ trying to gain entry to the trailer at the channel ports.
Nah…I shall stick to being at home now, I have done my share.
I used to drive for Danzas, then Europa Worldwide both in Manchester, for nearly 8 years in total and never did a single night out. It’s just what goes with the job I suppose.
10 nights out in (almost )37 years, the last in October 2001 and before that May 1993 both unplanned but I have been on permanent nights since 1991 and could never go back on days .Quite a few of us nevertheless carry gear for an unintended 9 hours in the Scania Hotel. When I began at the back end of 1978 not a single one of the ex-long distance men I worked with said they missed going down the road. Always each to his own though.
Been class 2 since 2001 and never done 1 night out and never will. Thats for the real truckers i like to have a life
Been driving lorries for 8 year and had to do 3 nights out all caused by snow! Not for me I’m afraid let one of you head cases do them instead

Totally agree
Hats off to the fella. Bet he has earnt some decent wonga at Tesco for 26 years on one of the nice old contracts doing 40 hour weeks with no nights out. I’m jealous!
I have done 5 nights out. 2 were planned, 3 because of being screwed over by a cowboy outfit who took advantage of my early naivety giving me undoable runs.
If I never do another one again i’ll be happy. Tramping is basically living in a miniature camper van with no toilet or running hot water - not for me!!
