Had years of it, and would recommend it nobody. The ‘real’ truckers are welcome to my spot in the layby and can fill their boots with as much [zb] food as they like. .
I’ve also had years of it, but if I stopped in bloody lay bys and ate ■■■■ food all the time I wouldn’t have lasted a week. Maybe that’s where you were going wrong

Oh no, I was wondering when one of the “real men” was going to turn up here I was hoping that you didn’t see this thread robroy
I miss tramping, it’s a way of life not so much a job. I’ve put a stone on since I stopped tramping and I do longer shifts have less of a life currently but do get 2 days a week off and see my daughter a lot more. I reckon I’ll go back once she’s grown up a bit.
I’ve been to towns Id never heard of/thought of going to. Spoke to some great random folk over beers. Seen the highlands and the brecons and used to see somewhere new quite often and being paid at the same time. Each to their own, I’m bored ■■■■■■■■ on day work running round pulling a fridge to rdc’s it’s boring me to death.
There is nothing ‘right’ about sleeping in a tin box with no facilities to hand five nights a week, whether that is in a layby or truck stop. To be honest, when I was tramping I had a list of approved parking spaces, so laybys were only when I got caught out. Would go miles out of my way to get in BP truckstop at Rugby, to get my own private washroom, and loo, could take or leave the food though.
I eat very well at home, and struggle to think of a roadside cafe or truckstop that would serve me a meal that I would find satisfactory now. Some people are happy with sub-standard living and eating, others move on from that. Life is far too short. As for that nonsense about ‘how would you cope in the wild?’ on another thread, as I get a lot more free time, I can spend some weekends in the mountains, camping and climbing. Which is infinitely more preferable to driving past them and looking at them. Or sitting in a truckstop with that 1000 yard stare that all long distance drivers get near the end of the week.
Just because you don’t like it doesn’t make it wrong
theres better ways to spend an evening then in a lay by i agree that’s not my thing but there’s plenty of ways to get more out the job. I was certainly happier on the road all week then I am now up at 2.30am hitting traffic on way home every day yaaaaawwwwnnn
You sound like a bitter old man
Not bitter, nor too old. Just think sleeping in a truck is a complete waste of time and life. Some may like it, but as I have done years of it, and even then only done it out of necessity, I really struggle to see how anybody would want to do it.

Thanks for acknowledging I’m a real man, you deffo got that right , but I admit when I saw your post aimed at me I nearly spilled my nail polish on my crop top q
I am going to bring a complete ■■■■ storm around my lugs here, but I have always thought that tramping was part of trucking, and if you were not a tramper then you were just playing at it. A bit like joining the Army and saying I want to be a soldier but don’t want to go on tour, I want to stay at home instead.
Ok a lot of you will think that is pure ■■■■■■■■, and maybe you are right, but it has always been how I saw it.
Before I get all the stick it is not a pop at day men, in fact I can certainly see the attraction of being home every night, it is just that I have always tramped and rightly (and most probably wrongly ) thought that way. s
So go easy on me as I’m a delicate soul and get upset easy

Funnily enough I agree.
I am Cat C only, and strictly a day man only, my patch stretches from Dartford to Reading, and from Winchester to Milton Keynes. I have never ever considered myself a “real trucker”.
I partly agree Roy, thing is these days with company’s having multiple depots uk wide the need for most motors to be long distance now is declining. It’s defo a way of life and part of the industry but then there’s a mass of firm that couldn’t cope with wheels being cold for 9-11 hours a day. I know what I prefer but know how happier my house is currently me being home.
I don’t mind 1 or 2 a week. Means i get to drive a bit further from work and normally park up by 5pm, compared to when i drive back to base it might be closer to 8pm. And you can pick your start times depending on your first destination, when at home i have to be at work 6am each day, when out on the road i might not start till later and its no bother.
I think i would get a little bored out all week but then as i have not tried it i can’t judge.
