The conclusion being that distance drivers only have themselves to blame in coveting their jobs too much,at others’ expense. On the basis that it is possible to have too much of a good thing and how often do we ever see agencies asking for distance/international drivers,as opposed to all the other boring multi drop/building deliveries/retail distribution, home every night type dross.
Having been around a bit myself, I’m not entirely convince that my £40k+/year job with paid breaks, sick pay, pension, share-save, gym, clean work & not a lot of hours, could be described as ‘dross’. Compared to this ‘good thing’ of yours which see’s you scouring lay-by’s & industrial estates for somewhere to sleep every night.
No thanks. I’m more than satisfied with my work and remuneration package. Why would I care about someone I’ve never met.
If you’re doing a garbage job with poor pay that’s your fault nobody else’s.

I don’t care about “this industry” or anyone else in it. As long as I’m comfortable that’s all that matters.
xichrisxi:
Still don’t understand the whole aim of this…should Mr A go on strike in protest that Mr B gets a [zb] wage even though Mr A is on a good wage?
Exactly if there is any action it should be aimed at the worst in the industry, of course the best action is to give them a taste of the Free Market economy they love to talk about when there is any threat of regulations and shop around for the best deal on wages and conditions.

No man is an island, Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent, A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own Or of thine friend’s were.
Each man’s death diminishes me, For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee
Its already happening mate…theres someone on F/B trying to do the same…not having much luck though with the recruiting…long gone are the days when drivers had backbone, and would walk out and picket with the drop of a hat…those days will never come back…and no one is interested …we can all moan, about every aspect of the industry, and everyone will say Yeah…thats right…but thats about it…Many things have changed in this industry…we have better vehicles and trailers…no roping and sheeting anymore…open the doors and there you go…or open the curtains…we have protection ( of sorts ) against unscrupulous bosses…i prefer a boss who calls a spade a spade tbh…some earn a crust…some earn a great deal…but its everyone for himself nowdays…which is why you wont get much support. BUT, what you can do is lobby your MP…bombard ministers…the RHA etc, and get some things changed…if you can, i`ve been doing it for many years…fighting a one man war…dont be afraid of the bosses…tell them you aint doing this…or that…if it doesnt suit… but to get drivers to join a walk out…forget it.

I agree wholeheartedly. I am supporting you. I have been on strike now for 6 months, unfortunately, nobody seems to have noticed. I turn up, clock in and sit in the office keeping warm for 8 hours. When I get my pay increase, I’ll go back to work. Unfortunately, my strike seems like it may go on for some time.

No, laziness and apathy got this industry where it is. Why the hell should I stick my neck out for someone who can’t be bothered to help themselves?

keep looking after yourself old lad.
Good lad .
I will. I worked hard and stood up for myself to get into the position I am now in. Maybe if more drivers had the nuts of the four women in the other thread, they wouldn’t be in crap positions.

He ain’t spouting rubbish though, getting a good paying number is difficult sometimes so you got to put the effort in. Then you get rewarded with the better pay. Sometimes it’s because you can do a niche job, willing to do a few weeks away Euro work or just simply a known reliable driver.
Stay on general for profit transport and you probably won’t hit great hourly pay so you aim for a nice truck as the hourly rates between companies are probably similar.
DriverNumber1:
Having been in this terrible job for almost 20 years and now working more hours than ever for less pay I reckon it’s time WE did something about it. I cannot believe that any driver is seriously happy with the situation. We are basically on minimum wage and treated like the lowest of the low for doing what is an essential service. The working time directive is seen as a target rather than a safety limit and the working conditions are, quite simply, shocking.
I am constantly infuriated by the lack of passion for this topic by almost all drivers I meet. It seems that everyone is more than happy to moan and whinge about it but no one will actually stand up and try to do something. The worst offenders are the guys who do tramping. You lot should work out your hourly rate, you’re basically unpaid security guards.
Until the drivers actually grow some balls and stand up for themselves this situation is not going to change.
I am willing to give up some of what little free time I get to have a go at organising a national walkout. If ALL OF US get together and agree to strike for a week THEY will have to listen. I cannot do it alone. I will no longer work for any company as the wages and conditions are just not good enough. Everywhere I have worked has been the same, the drivers all moan but when I stick my neck out no one EVER backs me up. Only WE can change the situation. Just how far up your arse does your employers ■■■■ have to be before you realise you’re getting forcked?
A petition to the gov won’t work only a walkout will have any effect. I propose setting up a dedicated website to organise this, or maybe doing it on here but I’m not sure of the site rules on that one.
Is anyone with me or are you all happy to be forcked by your employer?
So its took you twenty years to work it out did you not think about changing jobs in all that time and i often wonder why those that dont like the job and always moan why did you take your class one in the first place
