My quest for class 1

IIRC you did ok at the open day at Bretts just go back to that & what you learnt with Brian remember his voice

We all have bad days so dont worry to much or beat yourself up

Peter my instructor said that forgetting the number plate etc would be a fail but will just keep going thru in my head I know the black procedure no probs just the trailer height number plate I just forget so will keep in mind all u have said , as for reverse well tonight my front room has become a test area and I know all the routine hard right parallel till see trailer to right mirror then along yellow line till see cones straighten then half turn bend into box straighten up just have to stop over steering as end up snaking all over goes fine in front room lol ! So now off to bed early start and hopefully better day

forgetting the number plate etc would be a fail

Don’t want to get bogged down with this, but let me say that I’ve never taught that and never had a fail as a result. It’s not a fault - let alone a serious fault.

I monitor our instructors periodically and have recently had to “strip back” what was being taught for the coupling-uncoupling. There was nothing wrong - just more complicated than it needed to be. Then there is a danger of missing stuff that really does matter.

Stick to the routine you’ve been taught and you’ll be fine.

Best of luck, Pete

I hate to bring this up Jen. But remember a few weeks ago all the advice you gave me…

Stick at it girl. It’ll come together and you will wonder what all the fuss is about.

Get the instructor to (re)demonstate the reverse procedure. Watch closely how much lock they put on and at which points.

As Pete has said, in the real world the trailer height is important. But I passed without mentioning it.

It may help to think of BLANK instead to remind you of the number plate.

Hope today is a better day for you. I have fingers crossed as I know how you are feeling right now x

I struggled with the reverse, oversteering and not going far enough if I had to shunt. The reason for my over steer was that I was expecting instant movement from the @rse end. When making your way back to the box try very little steering and let the trailer do the work it looks like nothing is happening at first and then it starts to hook round. It plays with your head but once you catch onto its just a case of rinse and repeat.

When taking a shunt move well forward the target cones must be seen on each side in their respective mirror then straight back. It seems too far but it’s not, I used to never move forward enough and then play “guess where the cones are” they were not usually where I though.

Good luck it will come together.

Hi Jennie,
I also struggled with the reversing when doing my c+e always oversteering then having to think which way to turn the wheel to get it back !! A friend of mine told me to turn the wheel a little at a time then straighten up and repeat this until you have the trailer where you want it, it worked for me but everybody has different ideas about whats best, you will find your own way of cracking the reverse.
Still not very confident reversing, got told off last week because it took me nearly 8mins to get into a bay, didnt do much for my confidence that one !!!
Best of luck to yourself and roadrunner this week and i will look forward to reading that you both have pass certificates by the end of the week !!!

Good luck, failed my class 1 on friday , went over the kerb on a tight left turn literally 2 mins from getting back to the test centre  but all good experiance tho got retest booked for 28 nov !

Sorry to hear that mate, fingers crossed for you next time.

Cheers Harry

Try not and stress too much, i know easier said than done. I was in the same boat with this reversing malarkey, stressed me out big time, thought i would never grasp it, nearly all of us have been there. It took me 3 odd day’s to sort it out, at one point my instructor said he could see me getting all stressed and when you are like that your brain goes into overload and you will just tend to make a complete mess of it, best to have a break and come back to it. Thing that helped me was watching the other guy, do you sit in the cab when other trainee has their go? i recommend it as it helped me from just watching. Also i used to watch youtube videos of it which i found helped. Little movements is the key, as your going back give a little left turn, hold it a few secs then take it back off, keep adding the little left as necessary until you see the trailer bending in where you need it.

Also i never mentioned about number plate or height either and passed, but of course it’s good practice.

I wish you goodluck and don’t worry the reversing will come, and you can take 2 shunts on test day too, goodluck.

Good luck Jennie you will do it I’m sure best advice I can give is stay relaxed think of it as driving with a mate, and as for the reverse don’t do what I failed to do as the old saying goes as I quote many a instructors / drivers “don’t be ■■■■ take a shunt” sorry for language lol always stuck with me hahah

Does your trailer have the magic markers on it to help reversing?

Hi guys
Thanks for the tips regarding reverse today I realised why the bloody trailer was still weaving even in straight line , when I thought the steering wheel was straight I was slightly off just by a tiny amount but enough to send trailer skew width I now know by having the merc badge pointing straight on wheel that is the position of straight wheels and was able to send the trailer back in a straight line ish , tomorrow will be attempting reverse again I’m gonna ask my instructor to demonstrate whilst I sit beside him then hopefully will see how he does it from cab point of view , today was all about driving test routes to familiarise us with them hit two kerbs on very tight turns but will know better for tomorrow we will be driving them again after reversing practise tomorrow morning up in st Albans , so today not too bad driving making the mistakes now will prepare me for fri when have to do it right ! So fingers crossed that crack this reversing lark tomorrow as then I have only thurs morning to try again , must remember to check my left mirror before sticking indicator on to turn left for some reason it’s the only mirror check I miss I seem to get all the others  but will work at that tomorrow , thanks for all the encouragement guys it is helping I appreciate it

I don’t think so the only marker I have is a bull dog clip on mudguard of back wheel so know when to stop when in marked bay

I am doing 3 days in Beds Bucks and Herts starting tomorrow so may see you out and about. I will be in a blue rigid WB&H.

Glad things are beginning to click. You will find it will all come together for you.

Hope tomorrow is a good day for you

Different trainers use different markers. So long as you are happy with where to visually line up the ‘marker’ to get you accurately in the box then it does not matter what marker is used.

Just don’t be offended if you see me and I don’t see u as will be busy concentrating

Jennie, Forget all about looking at the Merc badge on the steering wheel - - you need to be looking where the trailer’s going! It’s really simple: if you can see the trailer coming round in the right mirror, steer right. And the opposite for left. Don’t spend time looking at the steering wheel, in a matter of a couple of seconds the trailer can get a life all of it’s own!

Hope you find that simple tip of use and all the best for the rest of the week, Pete

Also may I suggest looking at C+E Reversing on YouTube. It may give you a few pointers on technique.

I know it seems like it’ll never come. I was at that point only a matter of weeks ago and then it just clicked. Keep at it sweetheart. You will get there

Hope today has gone well for you Jen.

I am sure you will have a better grip on things and should now be gearing up for Friday

Hope all is going ok for ya. I wish you all the best for test day

Hope it all clicked today Jennie. Rich
