If I was late back and needed an early start the next day,I would often drop the trailer in the yard then go home in the unit…as did a college who lives a few doors down the street…no problem, just don’t claim n/o money.
p.s I presume muckaway will be booking an hour for taking the truck back this morning

That was Thursday night. They had me on a local premix plant yesterday and on local muckaway Monday.
Doubt I’ll need P45 vern as they’re more concerned with the rush abouts and parkup at 3 book til 5 lot.
No big deal I’d say, if there is no night out pay structure in place you are not claiming anything by putting it on your timesheet. If anyone has an issue then it is a sense of humour failure on their part.
If you’d dumped the wagon outside and made your way home then they may have cause to be upset but if they couldn’t be bothered to find out when you’d be back to let you in.
A few years ago I loaded a piling rig on the Isle of Wight late afternoon, it ■■■■■■ down with rain and I was caked from head to toe in muck, I was supposed to night out (day cab, so find a hotel) so I could drop it at 8am in Epsom. Trying to find a Travelodge late evening with enough secure space for an 8 wheeler with a £250k rig didn’t appeal so I decided that they could pay for the fuel to get me home rather than a hotel and meals. Rig was onsite at 0730 in Epsom. No bother.

Last night I worked late and after a second break and with about 15 minutes left, found our quarry gates locked (drivers are not allowed keys)
I must say, parking was nice and level, no diesel nicked, I got a nice meal and bathroom was clean. The bird running the place had a cracking set of norks and got in bed with me
With your first point, maybe it will send a message to the stupid prats who you work for, where did they expect you to park the bloody thing? They either trust you with a key or pay a security monkey who can count how many lorries are in the yard.
On the second point or points, you are right, she does have a cracking pair of norks
Re-reading some of the replies, I think whatever I could’ve done would be wrong…
Refused to do the late load.
Dumped the lorry outside the quarry gates.
Slept across the seats and do proper night-out.
Taken the lorry home where I could see it, it was out of the way and parked somewhere clean and level to check it over (for once).
I think the only Mistake you made was to post about it on here also if the gates are locked presumably your car or what ever is inside so if you leve the truck you cant then get home
It was only my pushbike locked inside the pit so I wasn’t too fussed; If I’d left the lorry at the gates it’d cause a road safety issue as a road out of Ducklington village merges with the pit entrance and the lorry would stick out in the road. Plus, it’s a half a mile walk upto the weighbridge (after climbing the gates or wall) then cycling back and lifting bike over. We used to do this but were banned from doing so due to H&S. So I was screwed whatever I did.
I’ve been thinking about this and bearing in mind some of your other posts I’m coming to the conclusion that you are a bit of an odd one in your organisation. By that I mean that you don’t fit their way of working, that’s not a criticism but you are always saying that you work to the book and the others don’t.
I’d tread carefully as it could be that they are looking for a way to get rid of you and will present you with opportunities to trip yourself up and give them an excuse to sack you. I was in a similar situation a few years ago, I took a job (no nights out / day cab) and then they started pushing me into nights away. I did them but ran battles against them about it, my final week they made me do a Monday and a Tuesday night out by getting me to deliver to a site in Cheltenham at 1730 and wouldn’t let me deliver at 0800 Wednesday. I did exactly as asked because I had a feeling that they’d sack me if I didn’t, did the rest of the week as normal and at 1700 Friday they announced they were terminating my employment, not sacked nor redundant, didn’t need a reason and paid me a months notice and asked me to leave. I can only assume that they tried to get me to go home Tuesday and deliver to Cheltenham on Wednesday so they could sack me, but when I didn’t play ball they had to pay me off instead. I actually did quite well because they’d also managed to overpay me by about £1000 in overtime to date.
Or it could be just some awkward ■■■■■■■ getting their own back.

I’ve been reading Muckaways posts and topics for over a year now and I don’t think he has a P45 pending.
For sure he might have a laugh at his firms expense but it reads to me that he gets the job done day in and day out with little or no bother.
What haulier could ask for more?

The company pages I set up on the old time thread are quite popular Last year the MDs son was on work experience in various departments and I was asked to take him out on a few locals, turns out he looks at the pics I post and some “comments” and actually got his dad to change a few safety rules like removing the ladders from the tipper sides. He climbed up to clean the sides of the body then asked how would we do it without ladders. Result was we still have them.
I brought the lorry home again tonight; Running short of time combined with cars and people lining the A40 waiting for the repatriation cortege which I luckily avoided by about 10minutes.
Nothing’s been said about me bringing the lorry home, but employer introduced an “Overtime1” rate last week which is paid at about £10.50 p/h after 5pm.
