Last night I worked late and after a second break and with about 15 minutes left, found our quarry gates locked (drivers are not allowed keys) so I took the lorry home and cheekily noted “night-out” on my timesheet. Was I right or should I have tried to contact someone to let me in? Most of my colleagues say I was right but one or two non-drivers think I’ve caused a bit of friction between transport and the quarry. What does everyone think?
I must say, parking was nice and level, no diesel nicked, I got a nice meal and bathroom was clean. The bird running the place had a cracking set of norks and got in bed with me
I think you ASK for trouble to be fair mate. Just saying.
Make sure you put a claim in for digs due to having a day cab. Also toiletaries and new under crackers

In what way? I never refused the work I was given, stuck to speed limit and hours rules and yet nobody could be arsed to leave the gate unlocked so I could park up. I have a daycab too.
Have you any more parking spaces available? The service sounds very good.
I might sound a little dense here but couldn’t you have just phoned the yard to say that you were running slightly late and could someone hang on for a few minutes until you arrived back? Haulage aint an exact science or a 9-5 job, we all over run at times so surely they can work around the driver’s who take longer to do the job than other’s? And I certainly wouldnt book a night out!!
Just my opinion, I have been away from the job for 9 year now so have things changed that much?
Pete.
Sounds like my kinda night out, id say you did the right thing taking the wagon home. At least you had space for it!
il pay £25 hard earned for a stay in those services.
as for the whole predicament, i “presumed” once in work and got a royal bollocking for making the wrong choice. now if i have to make any decision stronger then do i need the toilet i phone the gaffer. it covers your arse, keeps people happy and they are the gaffer get paid lots and have a mobile for a reason.
go in and explain what happened and put your side across, if your honest and say you had never been in the situation before and am sorry if you ■■■■■■ up they can’t really do much
i think your cheek might get you in trouble, how can you book a night out if you were at home, could be classed as trying to obtain money by deception as you booked something you did not do, your boss might look at it as gross missconduct but thats only my personal opinion, i would of rung up as soon as i knew i would be late and said do you want to wait or for me to take the truck home! your ■■■ is then covered then

i thought that once i took a wagon home, boss went scitzo . he listed issues such as truck may not have been insured overnight away from the yard, may be in conflict with operators license and old mildred who lives next door may complain about a big nasty truck outside her house, all unwanted hassle.

With your first point, maybe it will send a message to the stupid prats who you work for, where did they expect you to park the bloody thing? They either trust you with a key or pay a security monkey who can count how many lorries are in the yard.
On the second point or points, you are right, she does have a cracking pair of norks
Are you one of them trouble making drivers, because you do sound like it sometimes.

maybe they had decided to turn their phones off too
for me i would have just taken it home and that would have been the end of it , but then thats why i get treated so well where i work
most of the comments just about sum you up i think
How long 'til Muckaway’s looking for a new job post?

^THIS^ Most of your posts are along the "What would you do/what if? scenarios. You SEEM to look for trouble where there’s none. I think you worry too much for a start, and you never know who reads these things. Just cos’ they don’t post. Doesn’t mean they don’t read. Be careful chap!

Only sometimes !
When I’m feeling negative about stuff, I do a search on his old threads ( Not answering the phone, Not cleaning the truck, Not apologising for running late and the the best one should I go OD ?
the answer to that is in the previous ones mate ! + many more ) and realise how posititive I really am !

This is exactly right ^^ you never know if he can’t leave the gate open and can’t wait around he may just send you home and deal with the complaints.
We don’t get night-out money as we don’t have any sleeper cabs. Yard knew I was working late and would be pushed to get back. Surely the pit staff could’ve shut the gate and left the padlock “on the latch”? Regarding phone etc I just let them pile the work on now, I do what I can and I’ve made 2 and a bit hours overtime and transport dept have said nothing about taking the lorry home.
