My first ever blowout

Juddian:
Never seen TPMS on a truck yet Stu, to be honest the latest motors are getting so bloody complicated re electrics that unless you had one for weeks/months i doubt you’d learn half of what features it has.

The 19 plate DAFs I drive have it on but it seems to be like the Audi solution that uses the ABS to detect the wheel speed and uses that to determine if a tyre is going down rather than measuring the pressure like the ones in my car. It works but it’s crude and if you’re heavier on one side than the other it often throws up a false warning.

Funniest part about where I work is all the trailers have TPMS valves fitted but we have no way in the lorries of checking it, the sensors are picked up and read by the gatehouse on the way in/out and a system on their computer flags up if they’re low. Problem is that by the time they’ve realised, phoned transport, transport have figured out who is pulling that trailer and phoned you up to tell you you’re usually 30-40 miles down the road.

Those systems will also throw up false warnings if there is a tyre mismatch. New and worn tyres on the same axle and it`ll come up every time.
After getting out to check multiple times, resetting it multiple times…

I’m guessing it’s an expensive system so, not widely specced on UK logistics4U fleets.

Guess you`re right, however:
The engineer at the end makes the point that there are savings in mpg, tyre wear, and the much more obvious costs of downtime at roadside, and repairs when a tyre takes out mudguards, lights, airbags etc.
Plus any debris hitting other vehicles. All costs to the vehicle operator.

(More dramatically there is the risk to life from tyre changes on the hard shoulder…where there is one…Yes, a vehicle should be coned off and safe, but in rare cases we all hear of HS collisions. A company might not cost that, but we can`t overlook it.)

Daily checks■■? Those tyres must have been in a terrible state beforehand.

Stupid comment, :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:
he probably ran over one of those many ratchet straps that we find littered on every motorway :exclamation:

Our old Daf rigids (59 plate 12T/15T/18T) had tyre pressure warning system. However, unlike the TPMS on my motorbike they appeared to not actually have pressure sensors, relying instead on some interpretation of wheel rotation speeds from the ABS sensors to trigger their alerts. They were for ever throwing up warnings which proved to have no basis in fact (ie pressures all OK). As a result, drivers simply ignored them (myself included).

this morning.56 in the middle lane on a “smart” motorway, front axle…not funny, not funny at all.My missus doesn’t think it was funny either, she just can’t get those stains out of my undercrackers [emoji38]

Want to actually describe what happened?

Loudest bang I’ve heard since I threw my only ever hand grenade back in 1980 something…most violent shaking I’ve experienced since my Fiesta was side swiped by a Slovakian artic a couple of years ago :smiling_imp: …and quite possibly a couple of “teenage girl at a Donny Osmond concert screams” thrown in for good measure
Hope this helps

Juddian:
What system does your Iveco use please.

It’s the Wabco ivtm system on all wheels - tractor and tanker . Panel on the menu showing the pressures and warnings.

Looks like a proper job.

Pressure sensor fitted to each wheel, wireless connection, and pressures/warnings displayed via vehicle screen, or a dedicated screen can be added.
fleetequipmentmag.com/wabco … -solution/

Does it do what it is meant to? Or too early to say?
(Juddian will pay your coffee for an answer to that)

Nice job that, Wabco well respected in such things.

Franglais old chap, are you sure you’re a lorry driver, cos the speed with which you offer to spend other people’s money makes me wonder if you’re not in national or local govt… :smiling_imp:

Am I a thieving spendthrift?
I`ll let others judge. But I promise, I am not in the same league as some of those you mention!

I make no distinctions between any of the parties either old friend, each trying to outdo each other to buy votes/kudos/signalling of virtue, they all make me want to vomit.

That’s a pukka system Owen and it wasn’t cheap, presumably it can also read the trailer tyres if applicable.

Unfortunately for the rest of us the chances are messrs bodgit and scarper would come in fit where it touches a ■■■■ poor system supposedly to keep the office informed, will save ten bob work 5 minutes and cost untold damage and numerous further problems over time where they’ve plumbed into the wrong wiring, seen it too often.

Just for your delight and delectation Juddian. Sorry it’s not a better pic. I don’t know if we have the system because our trucks are Spanish registered or because of adr rules. I thought it was a standard modern thing. Surprised it’s not in the Unicorn Kingdom.
