My first day on Class 1 multidrop

ok, now it’s my turn to share the experience.

i was booked for a 5 am start today, turned up and reported to security and office blokes. papers were not ready and i was bored for another 1.5 hours approx at an RDC watching a BBC film about North Korea.

Finally got the keys and the delivery notes. Ok, i got two drops, one at New Cross in London, another at Queenborough, Kent. Went through the risk assessment and the New Cross one did not look very good on the paper. Well, anyway, here is the truck, an 59 plated Renault Premium, set of initial workaround checks, looks ok.

I need to find my trailer next. Engine on, drive, move on. now what a hell is that? oh, ffks, driving without card! ok, card goes in with a manual entry for POA / waiting. Not the best beginning of the first shift

Found the trailer, a 10 meter (i think) single axle, non-steering, coupled, further checks. It appeared that the wipers jet washer were not working properly. Reported the wipers and told the office drove without my card 10-20 yards. Next step - program the satnav. Car satnavs are not allowed but i confirmed that a truck satnav is ok. However the risk assessment paper has the route so i do not chance it and just put the route into the device.

i was just a nerves the first 10-15 minutes, not sure if it was as bad as on the test, brushed a number of kerbs though.
on a406 on the roadworks at M11 junction hit the camera at 33 (with temporary speed limit 30 and normal speed limit 50). Not sure if it has been retuned but getting flashed on the first run is even worse than driving without card 20 yards. oh :frowning:

Approaching the New Cross area i got lost as to where i am supposed to turn, took the wrong turn, got even more nervous, and almost hit the plastic “keep left” bollard which was in the middle of the road on the kerb (obviously mounted it). Ok, now i had to relax and pull myself together before i really find myself in trouble, very annoyed and unhappy with myself. Got to the road i need but the last turn was a tight right one. I started it a bit earlier and watching the trailer in the mirror i think i was just couple of inches away from the building wall. That was a bit closer than i wanted but nevertheless, i saw that i can pass. Arrived, oh my god, that was quite stressful, but no damage so far.

The road is on an incline so i have to play with trailer and unit suspension in my attempts to straighten it up. Down goes the tailift and guess what? it is not levelling with the road and the potholes do not help either. I won’t tell you about the theatrical performance of myself with the pallets trying to turn them round, as that would probably be too much. I just say that it has taken me ages, almost every pallet got grounded and without the help from the store stuff i probably would have ended up handballing each pallet.

Ok, goods delivered, time to go. I give a quick walk to my escape route and it looks even worse than the approach. in normal circumstances it is probably fine but there are some construction works which have taken the pavement and a bit of the road. I don’t have any choice, really, it is tight but seems doable. so i jump in the cab, drive, move on.

WTF? the bloody thing struggles to move and is bouncing around. i have done i think 10 yards and notice nice black marks from the trailer tyres. FFS, the trailer ran out of air and automatically applied its parking break. Before moving off i obviously waited for the air to come back to normal but did not realise i had to check the trailer parking break (though i now remember i have been told about this during my training). That is going to be too much for the first day.

Break off, move on. As the tight turn approached i mount the kerbs i don’t think i can do it just using the road, trying to stay close to the construction area fence. The entrance door is open it is exactly where i need to go. Engine off, close the bloody door, engine on. My right hand mirror goes just millimiteres away from the fence, though i must admit i was in control of where it is going and the trailer nearside is 3-4 inches away from the wall. Nice one, finally.

Back on the road to Queenborough. That was actually an easy drive via A2, so not much to write about, the Queenborough store is quite big, so no tight turns and walls around. Unload, 15 min break, a u-turn with a shunt and back to the depot. Some paperwork, which i probably have f*d up somewhere on top of forgetting to take the ODO reading in the morning. Fuel up, good side reverse to uncouple the trailer. On my first attempt the nearside of the trailer was almost on the line so i took three shunts to position it perfectly.

what a day.

back to the office, hand the keys back. on their quick question “how did it go” i just said “it was ok” as i don’t believe they were interested to listen to how nervous i was and al the near misses i had.

So this is it. Goods delivered, no damage done to anything apart my confidence and i just have to pray the speed cam has not been retuned.

Next shift - on sunday: 8pm trunk run to Warrington and back. It has to be better than today. i really hope

apologies for a bit of a chaotic read - still trying to keep myself calm.

Multi drop■■? 2 drops■■?
I suppose 2 is a multiple of 1

Yeah, kinda  :unamused:

Sounds about right for Class 1, unless you’re working for Aspray which means 20 drops in an artic!

…forgetting to take the ODO reading in the morning.

One of my favourite tricks!! Just do a tacho printout, it has your starting mileage at the top.

indeed, cheers  not easy to be a newbie, init?

Shredded nerves eh mate?
As nerves is what it sounds like, and you’ll be much better next time…
But the important part was that it ended as a successful damage free run!!!
So role on tomorrow (Sunday) mate, best of luck!

If only doing 33mph i wouldn’t worry nothing will prob come, i know as had a similar incident not long ago speeding cam not in arctic though. I checked with local police as new i was not going so fast they confirmed for a 30 zone 30-35 nothing will come, 36-42 speed awareness course (if not had one in last 3 years) 42 straight 3 points.

So with your speed i would forget about that nothing should come (they have 14 days from time of offence to send letter to you)

Hope today’s better will be me soon

Don’t worry about that speed camera. Seen plenty of people fly through with no flashes.

Cheers Jaybpool, Freds.

Evil, indeed, i am surprised i managed to “overcook” myself mentally. Not easy to do a job perfectly when you have no experience

I pretty much did the same during my first week, but after that i just forgot about everyone else when i was doing something that required my full concentration. It’s almost like they aren’t there or in my mind anymore… Well that is until I see them in the mirror or feel a bump! (Kidding!!!)

You’ll be absolutely fine at 33, but one comment about the above post. 42 isn’t instant points. I did the course on a 43.

And the letter in the post should take 2 weeks, but bear in mind it goes to the keeper.

Keeper then notifies them who was driving, meaning that you get the letter “at some point”

My old TM wouldn’t even tell you that you had a letter winging its way to you.

I told him I thought it was a bit of a tawts trick, but then again he was quite a bit of one.

Well done on a blemish free day though.

Depending on the model of tacho you have, a few feet probably wouldn’t even register.

You still offending old ladies mate?

She had a very wry smile on her face. If she’d have been the gilf type, I’d have given her a go (picked off the scabs for a bit of lubrication) but she was a Nowak size overweight, silver haired, and wrinklier than a wrinkly mans ■■■■■■■■■

I will not post any more comments here, as it’s not my thread to hijack. But earlier today I made a comment whilst listening to the Radio 2 Festival thingy. One of the girls from the Corrs had asked “What should I do to make you love me?” as an introduction to the song.

I was winding down , window open, legs stretched into the cab etc etc etc.

So I answered Miss Corr’s question with a quite graphic and typically male answer.

At which point the old lady, unbeknown to me that was passing my door, said “I beg your pardon?” Before wandering into the distance (probably on artificial hips) looking back to keep smiling at me [emoji15]

Each police force has a little different limit, but the speeds i gave are what the ACPO guidelines are, and my police force use them the area you was in must have been a mile or so an hour more hence you managed to keep on the course saving your self points which is a good thing. but 90% are 42 and over straight to fixed penalty.

Thanks

cheers for the info

The second shift was much easier - overnight trunk to Warrington and back.

got another Premium with a high cab in a bit better condition and 13m tri-axle full size trailer. i have to mention that again i had around 10 yards driving without card

Defected o/s side light as per the pics, no probs from TM about that

it was quite enjoyable drive really. However, my arrival a bit confused local folks as they were not expecting me for whatever reason. It took some time to sort me out and i had to change the bays. I took my time on reversing with a number of shunts, but all went reasonably well. Also after that had a break (driving time around 4 hours) and that was a mistake as you would see later.

IMAG0119.jpg

Finally got the paperwork for the back load but it took me probably an hour to locate the trailer, wasted time :frowning:

During the trailer checks it appears that the trailer (13m, 2-axle) is fully loaded with pallets but the pallets are not secured at all, however local policy require it to have a bar at the end as a minimum. Spoke to the local guys and the assured me “it is fine, never had any problems”. Ok, not convinced, a quick call to my depot asking for advice, the answer is pretty obvious but still helpful - the load is my responsibility and whether i would be comfortable to defend my decision of taking the trailer in front of the police/vosa.

Ok, back to the office politely asking to secure which they finally agreed to do. They were polite as well but i don’ have any illusions they were happy about it. Another reverse, security bar attached and back i go.

I have around 4:15 driving time and guess what? for sure, i get stuck on M1 just before M25 still have time to get to the depot me thinks, and me was wrong. Rush hour was not very bad, but it was slower than normal anyway so arrive to the depot with 04:34 driving time on the clock :frowning: did the printout and explained that i got delayed on m1 and signed. But frankly speaking i was chancing it as i wanted to get home and not have another 45-er just a mile away from the depot. Lesson learnt, hopefully the not so hard way, the punishment yet to follow

The guy in the office (TM?) suggested me to park the trailer without the tacho card in as it is their land so another 10 yards with driving without card.

anyway, another day, another experience and no damage :sunglasses:

Good to see you had a better night, can i ask how many nights you are working per week.

I hope to be night trunking for a few months to get used to things seems the best way.

cheers Jay, i am not a full time guy, just planning pick an odd shift here and there to suite my main occupation schedule. Last week i had three shifts (including this overnight trunk run, two others were early start supermarket class1 multidrop as you already know), this week i reckon i can do only saturday and sunday if anything comes up my way work-wise

Very similar to me then i hope to do 2-3 nights a week to start nice easy swap and drop try and keep away from days or early starts for now.

Passed class 2, training for class 1 in about 8 weeks so hope to be on it for before christmas.

Keep us updated how you go on its a good read
