C,mon Harry bet you know

 I bet Coffee knows the catsback thing Klunk. I have been racking the grey matter but to no avail so far

Other Harry might know, I don’t-although I do have a photo somewhere of that sign at the top of the hill of the screaming cat with the trucks running down its spine…

I have called it the cats back i suppose it will do im telling the story when going down it following half a dozen of F Troop in a10mph convoy and i went whoosh you can guess the rest  200dm worth

No idea. I only ever knew the Wheelhouse. I guess the other was before my time.

I am 99% sure it was the dolphin Coffeeholic
And heres your wisdom in the paragraph below you know where to send the bill

After the feed and the crack off again the five minutes drive to Aachen Lichtenbush where on TIR minimum formalitys the carnet to the Belgians to take the exit page out then to the Germans with the tank shine which allowed you to take into Germany the same amount the truck had exited with on the last trip if you had no tank shine the limit was fifty litres into Germany and tax to pay on any excess fuel, then the next window for the permit and the leaf out of the carnet again.
And off we go via Frankfurt and down the Elzer Burg hill (the screaming cats back) where I once passed half a dozen of F troop (Rumanian trucks) doing 10mph the police sit in gantrys waiting for the likes of me and at the bottom I was one hundred dms lighter.
Then past Augsburg heading for the truck stop at Geiselwind to be served cool weise bier plus good German food by lovely young polite lasses, the truckstops in Britain could come no where near these places and it is a pleasure to eat there for my last meal in Western Europe.

I hope you don’t mind me mentioning it but the above reads that you passed them doing 10 mph, which means they must have been doing 5 mph…

Cheers Coffeeholic i have yet to get it translated from ■■■■■■■■ which should square it up

yup it was the dolphin - nearly missed a few 20:30 zeebrugge boats cause the ale was flowing well in there sunday nights  trouble was we always export cleared at trafford park MIFT on the friday so no stairs to queue on and therefore 1 or 2 pints in front of everyone else

can’t remember if it was after that shut, but barnacles was the shiny new craphole in the middle of the lanes (between berth 3 and 4 maybe?) - clearly remember a near mutiny when it opened because they were charging £ 1.16 for a pint of stella :open_mouth:

Coffeeholic has dealt with the “cat’s back question” in his usual correct style.

However, being of the older variety of driver, I can be very clear that the “dolphin” was the tall building. Others were correct about the wheelhouse.

The old greasy spoon they had in Eastern Docks we used to call “the Routiers” In fact I joined “Les Routiers” in that very building. Does anyone remember “■■■-ash” Lil, who used to work there? She dropped ■■■-ash into whatever you were eating or drinking as she went around clearing the tables. Smoke free environment  How times have changed. :exclamation:

I remember the Routiers as I too joined. It was run by an old guy with a thick beard and they had a shop or something on the ground floor.

Whatever happened to the ‘Continental Freight Drivers Club’ as the UK branch of Les Routiers was known?

Then there was Pam the cleaner with the bottle bottom glasses hide her cleaning stuff was the ussual trick then she would take your full cup away and leave all the stuff on the other mt tables and spend the night looking for her cleaning stuff
Was the routiers shop where dfg and dcs were in the old import building i seem to remember it was a long corridor with the cafe on the end a real ■■■ ash lil place as i remember

No, I don’t believe they were, but I might be wrong. The old “Routiers” was a long building near the Dolphin, and imports parked up behind that building if there was a busy spell. It’s now bugging me a bit about DCS and DFG being in that same building- I’m unclear and undecided.on that one.

I have a firm memory of this: DCS and DFG (the consortia) were in the building near the wheelhouse. If I’m right, I’m sure I remember that the Wheelhouse was built long AFTER the hall where DCS and DFG were to be found.

I remember walking out of the far end of that building, then having to turn sharp left to avoid the building site that was to become the Wheelhouse.

The hall where DCS and DFG were could be accessed in three ways 1 from the front- walk past the import turn-out bays, or 2 through the import turn-out bays past the MAFF office, or 3 from the far end, when you were parked under the flyover that was Jubilee Way.

Yes, the UK version of Les Routiers was called CFDC. I too am now wondering whether it’s still in business. I might even be able to find my membership card. :open_mouth:

I hope my senile ramblings are helpful.

I remember the route past the import bays near the consortia as I made my meandering way back from The Albion :stuck_out_tongue:

Me too, I’ve still got my little metal lapel badge pinned inside my brief case. Never go anywhere on a journey without it, just in case I need to show it to get a discounted meal somewhere. Never been asked though. You used to have to show it on the MSAs when picking the food with the symbol on. But I haven’t eaten in one of those for years.
